That was a hard lesson, Em! I felt for you. It is SO important for Addie to learn to go forward without nagging, so it will be worth it! Thank you for having the guts to show us this lesson. GOOD FOR YOU!!!

The attention to detail that Mary brought to your position, Emily, and Addie’s movements was SO insightful. What an amazing training session and opportunity for us to share in the sharing of the wisdom. Thank you!!

Emily what an incredibly opportunity! Mary King is my favorite eventer❤️. You sounded a bit frustrated during the lesson but I think she was giving you honest critiques and useful exercises. Maybe not as fun as an instructor who tells you to do something and applauds each time. I bet you’ll take her exercises home and conquer them!

Wow. As a nearly 53 year old, I literally grew up watching Mary. She definitely worked you both hard. You will have lots to think about. I think that Tina, Meg and Lucy also need lessons with her. Those would be interesting videos 😀

An amazing opportunity for you and Addie, being instructed by one of the Legends in eventing. I enjoyed watching this, well done she pushed you both and it may of been hard but you will both benefit from Mary's wise words.

What an educational, HARD lesson for the both of you! Wonderfully ridden, well schooled, and it really looked like you were trying to implement Mary's advised changes all while trying to help Addie understand them in the moment. I'm not sure I would have made it halfway through that lesson, Em. Loving the vlogmas content!

Wow! What an incredible lesson. I always like those lessons that give me lots to work on vs a “ that’s all fine” type of lesson. That leg…..dang, I constantly work on that and still don’t have it. Love the “ don’t keep bothering them with heel nudges” - they should respond! ❤❤❤❤

Ah this was so helpful to watch, I’ve got a pony just like her, likes to get hot but is actually quite behind the leg, so the reminder to get them forward then leave them alone was great. It’s about sharpening their hind legs off our leg without letting them run on the shoulder, riding is hard 😂 thanks for sharing!!

Thank you so much! Mary King. Wow! Wow! Wow! She didn't take it easy on you and I think you really rose to the occasion! That was kind of a back to basics for you, which was something I, personally really needed to see because I needed to bring my attention to all those reminders in my riding. Such a smart way to start preparing for next season! As always, I love you 2 as a team. She is an epic horse. You are doing an excellent job producing her and you ride her beautifully and I love watching your progress. Thank you again! It was a real privilege to watch this!

Way to go she gave heapful tricks to help with Addie, and for me with my boy, he does kicks out when i make him move as well! Telling me no, so cheeky! Oh I hope you go there again for lessons i loved watching you progress with Addie. Best lesson ive watched!!! Thank you so much 😊

Hiya Em. That was a tough one wasn’t it. Very easy for us to sit and watch and see what Mary was saying. Must have been difficult to watch back. I guess you’ll also get a lot out of the Megs and Piggy March video re giving and taking and half halts etc to get a smarter response from the horse, getting the horse to maintain a pace without having to nag them. Just been watching another video which again referred to some of what Mary was saying about body position and leg position etc on “Tim Stockdale-laying a foundation for show jumping”. It was also fascinating to watch how he builds the correct shape in the horse in order for them to be able to jump and strength into the horse to get them back off your hands and using the neck, back and clearly the power house hind quarters. Amazing how they all have cracking advice to offer. Best of luck with Addie. Enjoy your winter training. ❤️

Asking about poop-time is a legit thing! My old riding-BFF lost her first place in a show-jumping competition because her pony stopped in the middle of the arena! 😅 I don't know much of Mary, but she reminds me of my dearest ex-GP (doctor) : nothing bothered her and she called a spade a spade without losing her school-marm feel

At last someone teaching you how your feet and leg should have always been! Mary is from my time, in fact I'm older.
The only thing I don't agree with is booting Addie in the ribs as she should have been taught to move on from the leg with just a gentle squeeze from the beginning, so now poor girl doesn't actually understand why she is getting booted! So my suggestion is you use a proper long schooling whip and squeeze her gently and tap her gently simultaneously and tell her walk on firmly all at the same time, doing this at the walk only, halt and walk on regularly for a good ten minutes and she will grasp it quickly and then move on to walk to trot and this can be done out hacking as well as in the school and always instantly reward with voice and scratch, she will catch on quickly, she's a bright lovely girl and quite honestly, she didn't buck like that because she was saying no, she bucked because she was shocked at being booted and didn't understand why she was! When have you ever booted her like that??? So just be consistent and she will soon move off quickly and easily with just a gentle squeeze of your lower legs but do stop keep nagging her with your constant kicking, it is just making her dead to the leg as it would with any horse.
Remember it's down to US to teach our horse properly and kindly, consistency is the key.
Oh and it would help enormously if you ride with your mouth closed, it will save YOUR energy and always look ahead, tipped down heads make the horse go on the forehand as the head is the heaviest part of the body!!! Thus looking down in turn makes your shoulders and back tip forwards, you can't watch yourself ride, so why do so many look down?? Riding is about feeling your horse! Ask dear Cameron
Take care, good luck with dear Addie and marvellous Spritey

I really liked this lesson, it was hard but I didn't feel like it was brutal. I definitely wouldn't mind having lessons with Mary as she is very black & white with her teaching, but she doesn't shout at you or give you a hard time, she just simply does an exercise with you and if it proves in the lesson then it proves but if not then she just let's you move on and work that exercise at home. 😊

    Hi Emily,
This was one of the best vids you have done so far, Mary is a absolute legend and so incredibly knowledgeable and experienced , you are very lucky to have the opportunity to learn from her, I think you found the lesson difficult in how she broke down your riding and rebuilt it in useful and educational ways so that you can improve your riding and your confidence with Addie. It shows that even when we think we have got it perfected there is always someone who sees our flaws, that’s nothing to be ashamed of, but you have to accept the fact that nobody is perfect and there’s always something that needs improvement, in the long run you and Addie will be better for it. Back to basics.

Just a mental game--think of what to do...instead of thinking "Don't overfold" try thinking "shoulders back". If you think of the negative (don't overfold) then you have to think what TO do instead...that's two commands to self. If you focus on what you need to do, that's only one command to self. I thought you and Addie both look neat and tidy and were working mostly well together...those bucks! She was just being resistant.

Nice vlog. I always wonder if your leg should be always asking or just ask your horse for another gear, I wonder what everyone thinks about that?

you ideally want to only have to ask once for everything

😬 I find her very critical in comparison to the top level riders who have provided videos over friendly channels.
Need real feedback but its the delivery!

does anyone know why clicking is a bad habit? what’s wrong with it?

You’re not really allowed to ‘speak’ to a horse during dressage as its meant to be a test of invisible body aids, so not making a habit of it ensures your horse doesn’t learn to rely on voice commands. Obviously we all use them in day to day riding but for lesson purposes I imagine Mary wanted Em to ride as if they were in a test.

    15:26 and 37:31
i'm just a stranger on the internet / long time follower of the vlog lol but... idk i wanan share this. there's a saying, "children and pets are extensions of parental consciousness" and when i first started watching this one at 15:26 i thought "i feel like Em just described herself lol".... and then 37:31 happens hahaha xD bless isn't that funny. I love following along on ur journey with Addie as a youngster the both of you are stars ** xo
