It’s an easy drinking bottle of Amaro. If you were to compare the world of Amari to the world of scotch whiskey, I would say that it is the McCallan 12 of Amari. It is not, however, the best. Montenegro is particularly unchallenging. Doesn’t mean it’s not great. Just not very complex.
Fantastic tasting Jess. I’m actually doing one myself next month and really liked your format. The checklist was a fun idea. Cynar is my ABSOLUTE favorite but I’m also madly in love with Amaro Nonnino. I’ve only really begun to dig my teeth into Amari when I started the channel, it wasn’t a big thing at my old gig. If I only knew then what I know now. Haha!
Nice overview, very much appreciated! An overview like this would be great also for Vermouth Rosso, I think. As it is also a very varied and and confusing space for non-professionals. I have the Fernet, Nonino, Averna and Campari so i got the spectrum covered, i guess.
Hi Jess. I LOVE Montenegro Amaro. Since tomorrow is Mardi Gras, I watched your video looking for ideas so I could add something special to my Total Wine delivery. Not only did your excellent tasting convince me to add Amaro Nonino, I was treated to a bit of a philosophical exploration on the nature of amari. A metaphysical question of the form 'What conditions must be met for something to be a ?' is something my philosophy students consider in every class I teach. Kudos for exploring what makes an amaro an amaro and thanks for sharing your observations. I'll be trying Cynar next.
Wonderful to hear- thank you so much for the thoughtful comment! The thing I love most about cocktails is the social component. I personally don't drink very much- it's a completely social activity for me, and I love the way people connect and interact around food & drink. Exploring the ways in which certain spirits developed in relation to custom, society, and even physiology is fascinating to me! But philosophical interest aside, I actually recorded two more cocktails today- one with Nonino, and another using Cynar. Very different from one another, and both delicious. I hope you'll stay tuned and give them a try!
I have tried some of these amaros and even tried jaggermeister and jaggermeister manifest(way too smooth for me, like a smooth whiskey with some medicinal herbs added into it, not rly like it cuz no bitterness in it, kinda booring stuff xD, not to my liking at all). so far my favourite from everything i tasted so far is amaro montenegro. dunno why but i love the sweet-bitter combination of amaro montenegro with lower alchool percentage contained in it, it is just perfect, it is my top choice so far and i don't think it will change any time soon unless some better tasty products are released in the near future, thank you very much for this review, may god bless you and may you be very health and happy for the rest of your life. Thank very much for this review madam, atleast for me it was extremly usefull!
Since you like the Cynar so much, try Cynar 70. You will be in heaven! Ramazzotti is certainly delicious, but I agree it has a fairly common flavor profile. Easily enjoyable by most, for sure, but there are many others that bring that “something special”.
Jess this was an amazing taste testing of some Amari. Delicious flavours and so fabulous in cocktails!! I do love the Campari and Fernet but it took a bit of time. They are wonderful. I learned a lot and enjoyed this very much!! Love Amari straight to taste. Cynar is delicious!! I really love them chilled in cocktails!! Loved this video!! :-)
When we visited our son in WI, we learned of local Heirloom Liquor which makes a Pineapple Amaro. It's fantastic either on its own or as a sour cocktail.
Nice tasting. My favorit is San Simone. Of all of that you have tasted...Nonino (ok, it's good Cynar and Montenegro too). But I've never tried Cioccaro.
Wow! What a great overview. I think the only ones we've never really done are the Meletti and Cio Ciaro... they were very interesting to hear about. We're also massive Cynar fans, and my partner likes to make Torontos in the winter, so there's always a bottle of the classic Fernet handy. We also do Averna as a digestivo at a lot of the local Italian restaurants. I don't know if you'd like it any better, but we usually do it with a cube of ice and a lemon twist, and it makes for a perfect dessert for us. The other big ones we love are Vecchio Amaro del Capo and Varnelli Sibilla, which stopped showing up here ages ago. We've been savoring our last couple bottles of that, hahah. Thanks for this great tasting review!
Ohhhh, the Averna with a cube of ice and lemon twist sounds delightful. I have so many of these bottles now, I think there might have to be a series of Amari parties. 😂 Maybe a way to incorporate them into cooking 🤔
great video, thanks for that! FYI after tasting my way through all Italian amari on my last trip to Italy, I found Unnimaffissu to be hands down the best in the herbal/heavy/bitter category. (Which obviously is a matter of taste, but especially if you dont like anise too much, this is your choice) with Montenegro and the popular Averna (Averna sour on the rocks, ca. 3:1 parts Averna to lemon juice, being a VERY popular creation in my homeland Austria, especially with the ladies) being close seconds for my palate. Unnimafissu is hard to obtain so I'm not surprised it's not included here, but it is actually very affordable.
Did I hear you say something about Mainiacs? As in Mainers? Are you from Maine? I am, and having gotten into amari, I decided to give Moxie a whirl, having only tried once or twice, and it turns out it's like a sweeter version of amaro and soda. I've become a full-on adult convert. If you haven't had it, give it a go!
I think it depends on what you plan to use it for. Of those three, my favorite for sipping on its own is the Nonino. Probably the most versatile is the Montenegro, and the most distinct would be the Cynar. If you’re just starting with amaro, maybe try the Nonino first. It’s one of the ingredients in a Paper Plane, and really is lovely in general. Hope this helps!!
So the Melleti…. Have a question for you, does it remind you of a perfumey essence of Crème De Violet? Sadly, I haven’t found many of these bottles locally to buy yet. I personally do have the Amaro Averno and my wife and I love it in a Manhattan. And of course the campari in our Negronis are delish! Looking forward to adding more options to our collection! Thank you for your review! :)
Hello, I know I’m a year late but Jennifer Lopez has a cocktail brand and they each have a different alcoholic base! And her l orange has amaro in it! I tend to love sweet alcoholic beverages! Like an angry orchard, redds, Malibu rum, even high noons!!! Things like these drinks!!! I got her vodka based drink bella berry! But I’m hesitant on trying her l orange cocktail because I don’t know how it will taste! If you can barely taste it then yay super glad! But since I don’t know what kind of amaro she used! I guess u and I will kind of be out of the loop!😂😎🤩💜😍❤️ if u get her amaro orange drink of Delola! I would love to hear ur review on it!!!😂🍹
Great tasting and lineup! I've not really explored the depths of Amari as I generally just pick up whichever one I need for a specific cocktail... looks like I've been missing out!
I've been amazed at the variety and differences- and this is such a small sampling!! There are several American brands I'm super curious to try also. I wonder what Ireland has in the way of Amari... 🤔
Hmmmm. I’ve had every one of these and I’d have to say that I disagree with some of your flavor evaluations. You highlighted Melletti as being very floral and perfumy. I do not find it to be that floral. The one that really perplexed me though was you saying that Cio Ciara was very similar to Cynar. IMO, they couldn’t be more different, but I guess that’s individual taste for you.
The main physiological effect of digestifs is that they create an abundance of saliva as a defense mechanism to perceived poison. They DO mildly stimulate peristalsis (the flexing of muscles in the digestive tract that moves gut/bowel contents along), but only a tiny bit....
Totally confusing question, but FIRST, this looks delicious. PS is Amari the plural version of Amaro? Wanted to make sure you didn't misspell part of the title. Cheers our friend! I missed this one and the one before so I'm catching up 🙂
I learned in general that Aperitif are dry not sweet. Since dry bitter drinks stimulate the appetite hence the name aperitif. I think you got aperitif and digestif backward.
Good day. Sharing my support . Im a new friend here now . See you at my Home. wishing you success and more additional true friends to come God Bless Us Always
Very good review, thx! I recomend u to drink less and make some sports:), like swimming or running, very good for health and vitality, anyway, keep up the good reviews, was very usefull and detailed review for me atleast, thank you madam, keep up the good work.
You are AMAZING and fun! Thank you for this creatively done explanation. You have no idea how much you've helped!
Amaro Montenegro on the rocks with an orange twist 🍊 is 🔥
That sounds amazing- definitely gonna give that a try 🥃

@@GEOHHADDAD what’s your #1 recommendation?
The Cynar Negroni variation is called "The Lost Sailor". Equal parts Cynar, Aperol and Plymouth Gin. Shaken, served up. Delicious.
That sounds wonderful!
Why should it be shaken though ?
@@OverJam52 even though it is a spirit forward cocktail, the original recipe called for a shake and a fine strain.
Great explanation. I have never delved into bitters /amaro. Thanks for showing your top 3.
You’re so welcome! Hope you find an amaro (or several) that you enjoy :)
@@SavidgeKitchen I will! Nino looks promising.
Amazing comparison, thank you so much for making this video!

I can't wait to see what you do!! That Nonino is just really special. Absolutely love that- it's almost a crime to mix it with anything else!
Great video. To the point. Well edited. Fun. Informative! Thank you for sharing.

Great suggestion! I’ve been wanting to do a vermouth break down for a while!
What a greeat review!!! Greetings from Ecuador. Your tasting is spot on!

What a fun, video, Jess! Glad that you covered Cio Ciaro. I'd been wondering about that one. Nice checklist system!
Nice Nonino and Montenegro are my favorite in this lineup. Aperol is good to

Thank you so much for loving our Amaro!
It’s my pleasure!!! Truly one of my favorites, I use it often! ❤️
Fun video! I'm Team Meletti though :) Mmmm. Cio Ciaro is pronounced CHO CHARRO
THANK YOU! I seriously had no idea how to pronounce it. Even with 2 years of Italian in high school 😂

Heirloom makes a great Genepy
I have to find Ciacaro. Im glad i found you.
I love a good Compari Bouleverdier & also a nice Aperol Spritzer. But, I do need to find a terrific Digestive.
It's Ciociaro. As it comes from Ciociaria, a region between Lazio and Campania, mostly around the city of Frosinone.
Nice tasting. My favorit is San Simone. Of all of that you have tasted...Nonino (ok, it's good Cynar and Montenegro too). But I've never tried Cioccaro.

For me, Cynar goes well with whiskey and can substitute Campari in boulevardiers, for example.
Sipping averna straight up right now.

Very nice review of Amari.
BTW-Cio Ciaro=Cho Charo
cynar "chee-Nahr" made from artichokes, crated in 1948. Good with rum. :)
You’re a blast! I’d love to sit down and taste amari with you.
Branca Menta for me please! 😂🙌
But what if I want every bottle of Amaro? Great spread or Amari..... Love this.
This is the same problem I have! I think it just means that you have to host a lot of parties... LOL!
I love Averna!
Good video. But IMHO Campari is a "bitter" and not an Amaro

It’s pronounced “chocharo” I’m from 😢that part of Italy but I really enjoyed the segment, great job - Amaro Ciociaro is not available in Toronto 😢
Drywall?!
The driest of drywall.
I use Cynar to replace vermouth in my negronis

Yes! Amari is the plural of Amaro. But I use both in the title because I think a lot of people just use “amaro” for both… lol!

"Ciociaro" should be read as "Chocharo" (like in spanish)
Just for completeness, ciociaro comes from Ciociarìa (notice the accent on the i), a geographical area in the middle of Italy
"Averna scale" should be a thing. "It's measuring a 9.3 on the Averna scale!"
ah nonino lindu
Is this from stranger things?
CHEEoh CHARoh (That's nice)
Chee-oh Car-oh ("That's dear").
Ci in italian is always "ch" sound so think Ch-o Ch - r - o
