- David Abram’s seminal The Spell of the Sensuous (1997) argued that disdain for magic produced, in the West, a distorted rather than enlightened sense of the non-human world. Merlin Sheldrake’s recent work explores what Abram calls the “more-than-human” quality of nonhuman presences, and together David and Merlin examine what it means to live “humanly” in a more-than-human world of entangled lifeforms.

To Spell Magik
Write and rite are said the same
the act of spelling is in itself casting a spell
real magic of words put to page and to page is to summon
then spoken onto the air with our very breath
the transformative power of the chanting of a spell
this is how you start in the practice of magic
you literally spell the words cast them on the page
then release them from the page onto the air
The old poetry used a magical language
from the moon goddess the muse true
a language an alphabet based on
names of trees, names of birds
precious stones,months of the year
wild things
a language written not just on paper
but onto this very world
The enchantress, the Hummingbird,
Appearing out of no where,
Iridescent colors shimmering in the breeze,
she pauses mid air to drink in the sweet nectar
that this flower offers so generously
in this moment of fleeting serendipity
there is magic in the air
springing joy into ones heart
We invoke it with Alakazam Hocus-pocus Abracadabra
"I will create as I speak",
our words bring about the change
quick as that presto
this magic of poetry lifts our hearts
This is fantastic! Thank you!
