    I had this and sold it to pick up the Ventris. I actually miss the RV500 and will switch back to it someday. Got caught up with the online dialogue that the boss sounds artificial, but seriously the RV500 is legit and has by far the most customization available in any of the super units I’ve tried (Big Sky, RV500 and now Ventris). I would rank them:
    1) RV500 2) Ventris 3) Big Sky

      You're so right! The Big Sky produces that candy sweet but totally artificial enormous glass cavern sound everyone seems to love. The RV-500 has much better and more realistic stereo spread and will cover the under 3 second decay times superbly. Never heard a convincing example of the other popular units doing that with any real quality. Of course you need to listen with ears that can pick out those things.

    Thank you for this series, in the throes of buying all three 500 series and the IR 200.

    Great demo! Don't underestimate the Early Reflection mode. Dialed right, it can be supremely beautiful and can be combined with a longer reverb type in the A/B simultaneous configuration. Doing that gets you into TC Electronics M3000 territory, which is one of the very most realistic and sophisticated reverb units ever produced.

    Great video helped out alot to get me started. About the spring adjustment, you can ajust the amount of springs (1 to 3). So a little more versatile :D

    How you compare this to the golden?
    I’m terms of fidelity

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They both sound fantastic. The golden is more of a "character" reverb whereas this is designed for maximum versatility.

    I have a cheap EHX Canyon pedal for delay and reverb that works well. Would be fun to see you compare this to the Strymon Big Sky pedal.

    Hi. Great review as always. I would like to ask two questions because I am concidering buying this pedal solely because you can combine reverbs.
    Is there a way you can pan L and R the delay repeats of the delay effect of the unit?
    Do you get 50-50% dry wet mix when you set the knob in the center? Strymon for instance set up the 50-50 % balance around 3 o clock, which is a huge deal breaker for me, because there is no "headroom" for fine tuning the wet signal which is very awkward.

    You left the pre delay up for so long with other types, but cool demo anyway.

    Thanks very detailed info. I already just purchased a used Eventide Blackhole, before realising that RV500 is on sale in my area $200 😆 Is it worth getting or already overkill to mix with Blackhole? Thanks

    The Boss RV-500 isn't even half of the Boss RV-1000. I own a Boss RV-1000 and it's Cathedral algorithm blows away the Cathedral algorithms in the tc electronic M3000 and tc electronic Reverb 4000 and tc electronic System 6000. Boss likely hired a 3rd party algorithm designer back in the late 1980's to design the Cathedral algorithm and the IP is buried in the sands of time which is why they can't resurrect their best reverb sound to date. The sound of Sigur Rós.
    Sigur Rós have done guest artist presets with Eventide and tc electronic to divert people's attention away from the Boss RV-1000, so that no one will have the same reverb sound as them. In an interview they did with SOS Magazine, they also point to a different tc electronic reverb unit, which they used for drums, but not for their signature guitar and keyboard sounds. Guess who was inside of Sigur Rós' recording studio in Iceland while they were recording their album TAKK and saw three Boss RV-1000's - one sitting on top of the Marshall head, one sitting on top of the Yamaha CP70 electric piano and one sitting on the Neve console... all three units within arm's reach to the musician and producer Ken Thomas. Once you have one of these RV-1000 units and you play with it for a while, you realize immediately how much of that band's sound on their recordings is that one RV-1000 Cathedral reverb algorithm. They use the Boss RV-1000 Cathedral set to 100% wet on tremolo picked guitar, bowed guitar, and tremolo technique played electric piano to create their intense, distorting wall of sound by hitting the front of tube amps really hard with the RV-1000 Cathedral set up 100% wet and playing through it, using a variety of techniques with extreme dynamics, playing really really soft, to super super hard on bowed guitar, octave tremolo piano, tremolo bowed strings, tremolo picked guitar.
    With today's technology it would be possible to analyze a working original RV-1000 unit to devise a set of impulse responses from it, which Boss could put into a pedal that would sell well into the hundreds of millions of units. The problem with that and not having access to the original algorithm is that the behavior will not match the original rack unit behavior which is quite special with it's own Huldufólk (Icelandic gremlins) that appear and disappear at different dynamic levels, introducing a world of strange artifacts into the reverb that sounds otherworldly in the most magical and mysterious way. The Boss RV-1000 reverb unit had a post reverb analog EQ section with onboard EQ knobs to control the bass (100Hz wide shelf) and treble (2.5kHz wide shelf) and those controls were extremely powerful in shaping the reverb tone and reverb tail character and depth.
