This is the INSANE Story About the Invention of The Bulldozer | History and Evolution

  • Ever since we started rearranging the surface of the earth, there has been a need to push piles of dirt and rock and, especially, to push it into holes or over the edge of a bank.
It could certainly be done with hand tools, but only with great effort and much time. The difficulty arose with how to do it mechanically.
On Thanksgiving Day, 1904, grain harvester manufacturer Benjamin Holt tested a new earth moving machine on a farm near Stockton, Calif.
By the time he finished his experiment, more than just earth moved.
The invention of the diesel-powered traction machines that could move over land too soft to support horsedrawn or wheeled tractors caused a revolution not only in the farming business but in the construction and military businesses as well: Holt's track-drive principal was applied later to everything from bulldozers to the World War I military tank.
In celebration of the 75th anniversary of that tractor, the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of History and Technology put on display last week a 1929 Caterpillar tractor called the "cat 10."
It was a merger of the Holt Manufacturing Co. and the Best Tractor Co. in 1925 that created the Caterpillar Tractor Co., which is today the largest crawler-tractor manufacturing firm in the country.
Horses were great at pulling machinery, and did reasonably well with pull graders to spread material behind them as they walked. But how to use horses to spread material ahead of them?
Some say the first bulldozer was invented in 1904 by Benjamin Holt who developed an endless chain tread for his steam engine. Around the same time, the Hornsby Company of England also patented their version of a bulldozer which was closer to what is known today as a bulldozer because it was steered by controlling power to each track.

Take this all with a grain of salt. He refers end-loaders, traxcavators, even excavators as bulldozers, where he should be referring to the tractor. People confuse bulldozer with the tractor, he's not helping much.

This is absolutely NOT THE HISTORY OF THE BULLDOZER. 6:08 into this it's over for your offer of a story in the title. Without dates nor facts of the origin. Although a spattering of that is represented. You mention the forties and promptly gloss over the modern followed by a highly dubious list of builders in the production of bulldozers. Then bypassing laser technology get into the GPS manufacturers which I expect to arrive at the fourteenth minute chronologically. Also the reading of names incorrect often and many words not quite right? I have time only to offer this highlight of potential improvements. It's not entirely disinteresting. But the origins needs clarifying dating and being both observant and revealing the results of research. You owe me six minutes!

    Just to be technical.
A bulldozer only refers to the type of blade on the front. There are two major types, Bulldozer and Angle dozer with a variety of sub groups (U, Semi U, Straight etc). The actual machine is a "Crawler Tractor".

@@travistucker7317He’s correct. It’s important to get these technical terms correct, as we do in every other industry. Unlike the movies, not everything is a “steam shovel” or “bulldozer.”

Luckily, I know what a bulldozer is and I’ve operated several different makes over the years. This video though, to someone that doesn’t know, is hopelessly confusing and should be treated simply as a compilation of old and new earthmoving machinery.

Articulated and rubber tire loaders are loaders, not bulldozers. They can lift and articulate a bucket with capacity, not just a blade to push and grade.

Maybe the use of term 'Bulldozer' was used at one time. In mfr. literature & online, the term now used is Track Dozer & the variant, the Wheel Dozer. There is also the product line of Track Loader & Wheel Loader. Nowhere in the Caterpillar or Komatsu product descriptions that I found is the term "Bulldozer" used.
