I live here. The TeePee Motel used to be the glory of Wharton. After the Harvey flood they were badly damaged. I think the owner only rents them out by the month to workers now.
My mom is from there she's from the area of last part of your video, but back then that want within Wharton city limit it was considered the country.... They didn't get proper city sewer line(indoor plumbing until the mid 1970s)
A little insight into the Dinosaur. The was created by an eccentric artist that used to live in Wharton back in the 1990's. The guy also used to live in a castle he built on a small barge floating in the river. Normally there's a park around it but the park is undergoing some remodeling.
My husband was from Wharton - I'm from Houston, and sometimes we'd drive down to Wharton to visit his family. I remember this fantastic restaurant we used to stop at called "Fillers", I think was the name. The food was so good - I used to order the chicken fried steak.
The Karankawa Indians once occupied the land that is now Wharton. It's said they were very tall, with the average man between six and seven feet tall... much taller than the Europeans of the day (a tale that's likely exaggerated).
The Coco to be exact. I grew up on the west side of the River near El Campo in the small town of Louise. A lot of History in Wharton County and surrounding counties.
@@thumperrabbit4 RIGHT! The Karankawa were a band of the Coco. Historians say they existed there for 10,000 years (Texas State Historical Association).
Those Tee Pees are awesome! I remember they were abandoned out in a field. They're a throwback to the old Route 66 days of roadside attractions. It was set to be demolished but some guy who won the lottery scooped it up, renovated it, and opened it back up for business. We have a couple Roadtripps-Investigations there in Wharton and I love that small town and the renovated courthouse in the charming town square. The money they spent renovating the old courthouse to look like it's original, beautiful architecture from the bland art deco style was money well spent for the county! I've been subbed to your channel for a while. I enjoy your content and same love of road trips and small towns that we have. Would you be interested in a collab sometime? Even if it's just a good voice over intro? I'd love to introduce your channel to our audience, even though we're a smaller channel than you. Or even if you're ever interested in doing a ride along with us to a "haunted" location? That would be cool. We're also based out of the H-Town area. Anyway, another good episode my friend! Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks for all the additional details! I'm starting school again full-time this week, so my schedule will be really limited to film, but I'm sure we can work something out.
@@ThisSmallTown Sounds good! Feel free to email me anytime. I'll shoot you an email for one of our upcoming episodes and you can let me know if it's something you're willing to collab on! Thanks and looking forward to your next episode.
Pecans were a huge source of food in the past and so we still see them very plentiful in small towns and out in the country. From a single tree you can collect easily over 70 lbs of pecans depending on the growing season you can get over 100 lbs.
My aunt is a Rotarian; those questions on the sign by the fountain are like their 4 principles or something. I love the courthouse square. It reminds me of Denton's square up here in North Texas. ( I'm from Houston originally!)
That dinosaur is after the SINCLAIR Oil ..... gas stations had the mascot as a dinosaur. It probably was an office back in the 60's having that large of mascot.
That dinosaur has been there for years but i dont know what is going on now there was never a fence around it i guess they are doing work over there as for why there is a dinosaur there i have no idea but its been there as long as i can remember
That's my home town and I went to that church a couple of times as a child. I just wished that you didn't say there's not a lot of historical places when there are 🥴 an entire museum is down the road from the TeePee motels 😩
You were right right in front of one of the most historical black churches in that area New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and you’re zooming in on the white peoples painted on the sides of the buildings 🤦🏾♂️ if you need a ride along next time I’ll be delighted to take you around and share some history with you black and white.. you’ll definitely get some feedback from viewers. Great video by the way.. just offering to lend a hand.
Great question, because I asked my subscribers the same thing and even made a poll on my community tab you can go check out. Long story short, 97% of the people who voted wants me to keep the demographics in the videos because I was thinking of just taking that part out.

Ahh, ok. Thank you!
Seems like a nice town...thanks for taking us there!!
You're welcome!
@ThisSmallTown my daughter and her family moved down to Texas. You're giving me lots of options for places to go out and explore.
That's great to hear. Plenty of places to explorer, so you just have to survive this heat!🥵😂

Sounds delicious and that's a interesting name for a restaurant.😂
@@ThisSmallTown Yes, it sure was - everything was homemade, even the thick salad dressings. I haven't been there in a long time.
@nikkipage9284 I didn't even know you can make homemade salad dressing.
@@ThisSmallTown It was so thick you'd be able to stand up a spoon in it.

Thanks 1954. I appreciate that

Thank you Ann.
Go 4×4 on your next truck. Comes in handy in certain situations. Great video 😊
Will do and thank you.
You’re right, not every old place is haunted. But that abandoned jail definitely is. No doubt about it. Angry jail ghosts, too.
My uncles worked the corn fields out there for years
That dinosaur is after the SINCLAIR Oil ..... gas stations had the mascot as a dinosaur. It probably was an office back in the 60's having that large of mascot.
I've been waiting to come across a Sinclair gas station that I've seen in other's videos.
No- it was an art project back in the 1980s by a local artist that used to live here named Dana.
That’s a park where the dinosaur is a park called the dinosaur park, just recently closed I think for renovation
Surprised you didnt check out the junior college...nice campus for a juco
I'm familiar with WJC, but just didn't make the cut.
You need to go into the town. Go down old 59. You will find the history. Court house.
"Random door" from when people lived above their shops.
Ahhhh, news to me. Almost like the early 1900s version of "working from home". Thanks for the info.
It use to be a park with the dinosaur. For a long time it did not have a head
What's good. At that 4 way you went dwn a 1 way😂.
LOL word? What's the time stamp?
@@ThisSmallTown 12:55 you were distracted by the painting on the wall.

Go see WCJC.

Interesting, so it was unusual that a fence was around it then. Hopefully it stays or is getting a makeover.
Levee project.
They are building a levee down the Colorado River
I thought those teepee hotel was closed down?
It did. But the owner won the lottery and bought it and fixed it and opened back up for business
Whaaaaaat?!?!! I wish I would have came across that story to add to the video.
Wharton is my home town we moved away In 95 some of the schools I attended Abell street school in 85, Canton street school across the railroad tracks
Stay away from Tesla. There are other electric car options. I enjoy your videos.
There is a better side to Wharton. You did not go where the Jr. College is
It was a dinosaur park.
With only one display?
