I met Gus Rios in the late 90's. He was in a band with a friend of mine called, Turned to Stone. They were really good. One day after practice, I was talking to Gus about Slayer. He proceeded to play the first 5 songs off of Slayer South of Heaven on the drums to perfection. It was like listening to a live performance. Gus is really talented.
It was spoken to me that the music takes repeats within the history.. And I’ve listened to this interview over and over again.. And I lived through the same thing by myself.. I agree with Gus, hands down
Wow he shares the same views as i do about the metal genre. I'm 40 years old & grew up with Canadian metal bands like Anvil,Annihilator,Sacrifice,Monster Voodoo Machine,Killer Dwarfs,Razor,Quo Vadis,Lesser Known,Exciter,Neuritis. But Canada has some new metal bands kicking ass as well like 3 Inches Of Blood,Cancer Bats,Augury,Thine Eyes Bleed,Bison B.C.,Baptized In Blood,Fatality,Mutual Execution.
The stuff that Gus & I grew up with was the future,Megadeth,Slayer,Anthrax,Overkill,Exodus,Testament,KreatoR ,they were the future that set the standard for these newer bands like The Black Dahlia Murder,White Chapel,Trivium,Warbringer & so on.If it wasn't for those older bands their wouldn't be those newer bands.I still dug into the older stuff like Black Sabbath,KISS,Alice Cooper,Jimi Hendrix,Motorhead,CCR,Steppin Wolf ,Most of todays kids don't respect that older genre & where it came from.
I totally agree with Gus that deathmetal should not be about fashion and while there are many "fashion" death metal/metalcore/deathcore bands today, The Black Dahlia Murder definitely isn't one. They are all about attitude and tight performance with great catchy songwriting!
I don't really see how the "don't respect" the older genres. And Slayer and all of those bands you mentioned didn;t grow up much on Hendrix etc, they were mostly in punk bands like GBH, Verbal Abuse etc. I can't remember any metalhead of my age (past 30's) to be listening to that stuff. It was all about power/speed/thrash/death metal only cos eveything else was "boring and gay". Well, that's natural, I don't see why a kid should listen to Malevolent Creation etc only because they paved the way
Malevolent creation is one of those band we’re you talk kreator pleasure to kill slayer hell awaits maybe raining blood and alter the madness put those together and you got more malevolent creation and I consider that the Blueprint of 10 Commandments in my opinion
You know it sucks that Gus even has to mention the fact that the metal core bands are gaining more popularity and exposer than the old school guys. Back in the day pre myspace id imagine that these guys had to do so much hard work to get to where they are at now and that hard work is being overlooked and depreciated by this hardcore scene, which in turn is gaining insane amounts of exposer for the shit Gus was talking about, with the fashion and trendy characteristics these bands have that sell
Fair enough. i mean if you listened to this stuff. I don`t think your understanding what i`m saying or Gus is saying. I grew up on Obituary,Cannibal Corpse,Death Angel,Malevolent Creation,Megadeth,Slayer,Iron Maiden,Judas Priest.Or if you grew up on Motorhead,Jimi Hendrix,BTO,CCR,Johnny Cash, what i`m saying is what ever new music your listening to it came from some where & those people were influenced by someone. But myself & my friends we grew up on this stuff & thrash, speed,& Johnny Cash lol.
I am a huge Death Metal fan for the last 15 years. But I don't agree with these views. As Gus says, when he was a kid he listened to Thrash which was the music from his era. He didn't have to dig on the older stuff (e.g. Uriah Heep and Jethro Tull), he was listening to the music of his "days". I don't see why it is bad for today's kids to listen to the music of "their age" not caring about the past. They do the exact same thing as he did.
He's right about the younger "fans" lol. I saw Carcass in 14 with Exhumed & it was sold out, so we left for awhile (got drunk AF) & came back & were let in cause most of the Exhumed fans left after Exhumed played. WTF
Music changes all the time, traditional Heavy Metal and Thrash have gone underground (minus the recent Thrash Metal revival). So did Black Metal, remember mid 90's? When it was the most popular thing ever? Unfortunately for us, the Death metal fans, Death Metal has gone fully underground as well. That's life in music. And I don't care about that, I'm still into the same shit, went to see Cryptopsy the other day
That's cool and I'm broke but I do all I can to keep the bands I love going. I don't really dig all the genres either... I love the passionate hate that people have towards other genres and bands it means they give a shit and that's what it's all about. Passion. Do whatever you can, help a brotha out if you can, with a place, buying a shirt, get 'em a drink, what the fuck ever. Do something.
what does "trendy" mean? they're a new movement, just like our Death Metal movement came up around 1991-2. This is bullshit, it;s like saying back in the 80's "it's a shame kids dont listen to Uriah Heep and get stuck with this trend of thrash with bands like Slayer, Metallica etc". We need to understand that popularity in music constantly changes. We love this old stuff but this doesnt mean that everyone should do as well. Personally, I was disappointed with Gus's statement on this.
I can see some death metal bands playing until their 50's & maybe 60's? If they stay in shape etc but the whole band will have to stay in shape & that's a hard thing to do while touring & even 1 guy falls off the ship the band will be screwed lol.But i could see Cannibal Corpse playing into their 50's because all those members seem to be relatively Healthy & in a good frame of mind. They seem to have slowed down on the partying mind you corpse grinder gives it still, but other than that their fine
I don't disagree. What I don't like is the fact that us, metalheads, we are the only music audience that bashes and hammers against other genres. "Whitechapel are pussies, Suicide Silence are gay" etc. Personally, my first band was Candlemass, then Annihilator, Slayer and then most of thrash and death metal. I never liked traditional Heavy Metal and never will (possibly). I do respect it though but do I have to go to HM gigs and buy CD's? I don't think so... it's not my thing.
Starting with what he says was a cassette tape that was white with no band name on it and he didn't even care for 5 years and know what band it was because he said it was just about the music. That's fine. That a nice thought but too should not be a sole factor in not looking into a bands identity. I have a feeling that the real reason it took him 5years to learn the bands name/track names was because so few people even listened to death metal at that time. well if it's just about the music why wouldn't you find out what the band's name is so you can fucking buy more of their stuff? Secondly, if you're having a hard time finding new death metal that's any good you're an idiot you need to do a search on youtube and look up bands like Born of Osiris, The Black Dahlia Murder, betraying the martyrs I mean the list goes on and on and on and yeah they may look good but they play good music. Why can't you have both at the same time? You can and the reason he also admits that when he was getting into death metal the internet didn't exist and that you didn't even have CD though had cassettes. That's why he never saw what they were wearing because no one was taking music videos of these bands it's not because it didn't matter it was just a matter of exposure now we have HD you know when we have the benefit of technology and all those things play a part and why were able to see and hear new metal the purpose of metal has not changed its just we can see them now.
well i don`t say fuc* white chapel, black dahlia murder, suicide silence etc but i do think their fans are or i should say some of them are not respecting the older genre, fuck i`m 40 now & it just seems like yesterday i was listening to malevolent creation,Obituary,Cannibal Corpse,Deicide,Sacrifice,Voivod but these newer bands are a tad gay somewhat i gotta admit, they definitely don`t have that manly stature to them, they just seem so girly girl to me & with their beiber hair lol.
Funny that all the newer DM bands aren't really DM. It's deathcore stuff. It's VERY different to me as an old-schooler. I don't listen to ANY of that newer crap unless it's pure friggin' deathmetal. I saw black dalhia murder open for King Diamond once. Absolutely terrible to me. But KD is the KING!
yeahhhhhh........and now he's in a cover band playing "metal" covers of 80s pop songs. and now looks like the emo him and terrance had convos about. shoulda kept with your ideals ya kept here dude.
Deathcore, same shit different name, and I use those insults not based on their appearance but on their SOUND. E.g. Some of the fellas from those bands look hetero as fuck with their beards (TBDM) but they sound like screaming little girls, and they're just trend crap that will fade in time, MC have been going on for years, their sound is rawer, heavier, more brutal, than any of that screamo/breakdown crap. PS. You never mentioned Decapitated (I love those guys).
Not to cut in...but Blood Red Throne is post-influential compared to MC. No relevance. Might want to mention something along the lines of Unleashed, Amorphis, and/or Deicide.
@alayon666 Beneath The Massacre, Circle Of Contempt, Born Of Osiris, Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel( A NEW ERA OF CORRUPTION) Shadow Of The Colossus ... I could go on forever... DESTROY this band
Come on man..I KNOW you have some type of brain. MC ain't touching Decapitated or Beneath The Massacre. You admitted you don't judge bands by looks which is smart and who cares about Metalcore.. I never ONCE listed a Metalcore band
I didn't see your post or forgot about it. MC is irrelevant. Be honest.. If they didn't exist all new bands would still be around. MC is the worst of the old schoolers. I listen to Nile Suffocation, Blood Red Throne, Dying Fetus.. MC sucks

This is such a great interview that I keep coming back to it again and again.
Awesome. Killer interview. Thanks for posting it. Much appreciated. Long Live Malevolent Creation.
I'm 50 yrs old and missed them here in Baltimore's Maryland Deathfest. I'd have been there but the day they were to play, I had to work.
Wow he shares the same views as i do about the metal genre. Great drummer!!
RIP Brett! My friend!
Funny, They are all still at it!!
How come this video stops playing after 13 minutes and 31 seconds? Whats up with that?
Good work mane. I see you recorded Blood Brothers, you better upload that shit!!
damn i went to 2 of their shows and i'm 15. i did my research :D, and btw, the shows were fucking amazing!!
I don't really see how the "don't respect" the older genres. Exactly
What is the first song?
Malevolent creation is one of those band we’re you talk kreator pleasure to kill slayer hell awaits maybe raining blood and alter the madness put those together and you got more malevolent creation and I consider that the Blueprint of 10 Commandments in my opinion
If you like Gus check out Create a Kill With Alex Marquez!!
I buy cds all the time I love the record stores and want them to stick around plus you occasionally just pick up some cd and find out it fucking rules
You know it sucks that Gus even has to mention the fact that the metal core bands are gaining more popularity and exposer than the old school guys. Good vid bro!

Exactly
cool dude
That's right, instead of doing different tours the bands SHOULD team up and share the costs.
He's right about the younger "fans" lol. I saw Carcass in 14 with Exhumed & it was sold out, so we left for awhile (got drunk AF) & came back & were let in cause most of the Exhumed fans left after Exhumed played. WTF

I don't get it either younger kids have no idea about death metal's golden era 90's all the best bands came from that time frame
fukin' true. It is not possible to understand the present without knowing the past, and the past will reborn
I don't disagree. What I don't like is the fact that us, metalheads, we are the only music audience that bashes and hammers against other genres. Hail Malevolent and old school death metal!
2:45 thats why i love MC but dont listen to Whitechapel. Im 12 btw

@VileVengeance Decaptiated as well. MC is heavy.. but he has NO business talking shit on these bands
Seems like an awesome dude, too bad Malevolent kick him out though.
Deathcore, same shit different name, and I use those insults not based on their appearance but on their SOUND. E.g. No fucking Pop Punk riffs in Death Metal either.

Everything he's saying is simply wrong. Its too pathetic for me to know where to begin....
i thought it was pretty much spot on.
this guy makes zero sense
Man, he's grouchy.
I didn't see your post or forgot about it. MC is irrelevant. Be honest.. If they didn't exist all new bands would still be around. MC is the worst of the old schoolers. I listen to Nile Suffocation, Blood Red Throne, Dying Fetus.. MC sucks
