There was a long build up for the reveal in chapter 390 if I remember correctly. For almost 40 or 50 chapters, I remember feeling weird about Kafka and recognizing that there was foreshadowing for the eventual end of the manga, I just had no idea how big of a reveal it would be. It still shocked me even after catching some of the hints in the foreshadowing. A few days ago, I suddenly had a need to listen to the openings of the anime and noticed that in the opening of the second season (or was it the first one or both) there was a lot of organ imagery in it. This video made me realize that those were also hints.
The first reveal of the classroom after the graduation was huge shock. So much that just seeing the girl's alive and later turned into Kafuka at chapter 30X was terrifying
The clues really were all over the original show and through out the manga. Nozomu's odd family life, the opening and ending credits that just got stranger and creepier and chiefly featured the 11 girls in question. Very good analysis and breakdown, thanks.
The yaoi ending is my favorite ending bc of how it fits within the story, the storyteller guy is Christian and wears a cross on the same chapter that's similar to the hairpin Kafuka wears all the time except slightly more open due to being a cross and not an X shape, which one of the Kafuka children wears as a hairpin on the ending for the polygamy island chapter. Plus he's the one who wouldn't be on the group of brides chasing Zetsubou, he isn't "one of the girls" but still technically could fit in. He's hanging out at the church which fits for his Christian beliefs. So I think he either just happens to be possessed by Kafuka on that last shot since he was the one available at the moment, either that or he just wanted to marry Kafuka anyways and wanted to be included on the group.
Wow, always loved this anime, but didn't even conceive that the plot went past insane overly elaborate gags, and increasingly intense opening themes... Somehow it all actually meaning something, but we couldn't see the forest through the trees, is the most fitting thing ever. Excellent review, you really got to the heart of it.
Damn. I remember the fourth ending of the manga almost vividly well, but I honestly didn't fully understand it beyond a freaky thing with organ transplants, the fact she's dead, and the fact that Nozomu loved her. This is a great explanation, this manga and its ending really was more fucked up than I had already thought.
It's been years since I've seen this anime, then I found a wiki article about the organ transplant thing, but this video has shown me that there was a lot more to it than that and it took me 15 years to finally get it. Thank you so much for explaining this to me, I haven't thought of this anime since TH-cam was 2 years old, AnimeSuki still existed, and anime streaming sites weren't Feasible.
I do remember seeing background elements in the anime telling the audience that the setting is the Shouwa era (stuff like calendars or the random background text). I found it weird at that time, but now I just learned what is the reason for that.
one of the best things about about goku OP 3 Is that it has a rare shot of kafuka in her despair personality, both her hugging her knees and with her hair down and not smiling while standing on the flower bed of corpses that eventually erupts, that being her emotional state finally cracking. i love this series

The one foreshadowing moment that blew my mind the first time I noticed it was in the manga, where Kafuka was painting a picture of a brutal car accident. I can't remember the exact chapter. That painting was an indication of her death. It's also pretty horrifying when you also realize that Kafuka's father tried to kill her for their life insurance policy. I wasn't even aware of the different interpretations and endings for the manga. You made an excellent video. A bit normal, but excellent.

Kumeta's previous manga was axed. He also believed that some of his ideas were stolen by other authors. So when he started SZS, he designed the ending beforehand. His plan is to lay out the hints during the early chapters, and then embark on never ending (SZS style) slice of life chapters until Kodansha decides to eventually axe it. This way, he can end the series with dignity whenever it's axed, while also being able to prove that the ending is his idea first using the early chapters as evidence in case the idea was also used by some other manga during those slice of life years. Kumeta has received criticism for some of his past works having bad endings from the readers. So for SZS, he designed the ending in a way that allows the readers to drop the series at any point during the last 10 chapters, and any one of those 10 chapters can sort of function like an ending.
The "parts harem" reminds me of a comedy-harem-echi manga I once read, about a guy who had - let's be real - kinks about a certain type of body; he had an idea of a perfect girl with specific legs, eyes, breasts, etc. He then found this, but each perfect part on different girl. It was a comedy though, and I don't remember how it ended really.
The guy went crazy and made a grotesque frankenstein's monster out of the parts that he loved so much. In his mind, it was a success and he had created his perfect woman but in reality...

truly a masterpiece, but again, if you think about it 301.5 could technically be a continuation of 301, Nozomu sees someone in a bridal dress with An's body part , he either stopped of jumped and got saved, then harem ending happens also, speculations: Chiri has the heart Abiru has the cornea Kiri has a lung Meru has the vocal chord(doesn't speak except as Kafuka) Nami has blood(most common transplant, Jun may also have blood. also worth nothing Kafuka may have donated blood to everyone) Fujoyoshi has bone marrow(mismatched sporting ability and interest) Kaere has skin(nationality is associated with different skin color in Japan) Ai has gallbladder or spine(organ is associated with courage or lack thereof) Manami has reproductive organs(association with "mother/wife") she is also absent from the wedding dress scene, so the kafuka could be her, Kanako, Kotonon, the Yaoi ending, or here's a theory, Rin actually has received An's blood or organ too......... the others I'm not sure....especially Maria, is it possible she actually lost all her money paying for the surgery?
Whats funny is ending 30x is the sequel to the previous endings because they all happened because he simply redivorced each time, including the yaoi ending.

It's cause of how Nozomu said he has only one wife and each of these different females plays that role alternatively. Essentially it's really messed up to show that all their kids look like Fuuka cause they're Fuuka's kids. It cements sort of the idea that Nozoumu and Fuuka conceived these kids, and that the woman who play the role of Fuuka don't matter as long as it's Fuuka involved.
I'd be really happy if you answer this question: From my understanding, girls went to school just to give showa spirits a graduation at first but then it became their own lives, so who we were watching weren't showa spirits, am I right? (like who's in control of their bodies, were desperate girls and sometimes kafuka, not showa spirits) I am asking this because Chiri said something like "give us a Posthumous marriage" like who's in control is a showa girl, and they are using showa era calendar makes me think if who's in control of the bodies are showa spirits. What's your interpretation on this, who did we watch/read all the time, girls or spirits? Or were they switching time to time? (I might be missing some stuff because don't know what a spirit proxy is, there is no direct translation of it to my first language)

What’s the point of turning this post modern anime about pop culture in something like that? The ending is like yet another joke itself. Anime didn’t have a plot and real characters so this revelation would be the same as if it happened in one of episodes of SNL for example I don’t know.
I'd like to watch more of your videos, but the sped up voice/weird script reading is more than off-putting. I'm not sure if it's because you are condensing it to fit the video, trying to protect yourself from being found out in real life, trying to add a fake Asian accent, reading from a script+sped up makes it sound weird, or if you are embarrassed of an accent.
