17:00 You hit the nail on the head. These automakers fail to understand the tactile joy of a satisfying knob. There is a delight touching a well weighted switch/knob. I always say high touch points should spare no expense in material because I'm touching it all the time. This is such an item. Something they can elevate the interior with. Someone who doesn't know doesn't know because they have never touched such a thing but I assure you they exist and are a treat to play with and opperate.

As an engineer working in the car industry, I'll tell you that it's not the automakers who fail to understand it, it's the mindless zoomer generation of wanna-be tech nerds who don't understand the advantages of knobs and switches and just want everything to be about showing off, RGB lights and lots of screens and touch surfaces, and they're the ones demanding this. Automakers (the financial side at least, not the true car enthusiasts) are just happy about it because screens and software are much cheaper and faster to develop and build than a lot of high quality switchers, knobs and buttons. The profits in cars that have digital dials vs. analog are higher, yet, in most cars, digital dials are sold as an extra option. Just another way to trick the opinions of people and make them believe they're buying something better.
Unfortunately, we live in a time period where the trends in the car industry are NOT decided by the educated and knowledgeable experts, but by the clueless average Joe's who make up the majority of the market...what the majority wants will sell the most, by default, it's just tragic that the majority is clueless when it comes to just about anything, especially cars. I can't put it into words how frustrating it is to work in the car industry today, because you're not allowed to do what you know is best, but what the market demands, even if you know it's worse.
The car industry is now in a state that the hand watch industry was in in the 80's, with the digital watches coming out and becoming popular. It was a flashy novelty for a while, but then people quickly realized that mechanical watches are just better and cooler, and they became even more appreciated. I'd bet that in about 20 years, cars that will have physical buttons, analogue gauges, etc. will be luxury cars only, and those features will be considered luxury features.

Having just purchased my third Tesla Model S this last fall and dealing with ever declining quality, I am now in the middle of a buyback. I chose to purchase the EQS 450+ and just took delivery today. So much to love about this car compared to the Model S. There will be a few things I will miss about the Model S, too. By the way, good luck finding one with a hyperscreen for under $150k because of dealer markups. I can't blame them. You might be shocked how most actually have the more traditional S Class vertical screen, instead (something none of these TH-cam video reviews are based on).

I applaud Mercedes for having 10 degrees of rear steer on all trim levels as this along with the bank vault quiet ride handling sets it apart. It is a shame the heated steering wheel is not standard. So with gloves on while holding a fridged steering wheel we’ll be calling “Hey Mercedes” so often that bank vault quiet ride will be spoiled. One request is curb warning being added as the rear wheel turns right as you turn left from parking beside a curb on the passenger side could curb the rear rim along its 10 degree path. If not sensing then as EQS with cameras obviously knows the curb is to the right side can simply inhibit the rear steer until it’s clear of the obstacle. Thanks for a great review of a great product.💯

We will see the 2. VERSION of the EQS , EQE , EQ GLS, EQS MAYBACH and I think :
    1. Front Trunk in all the 2.Versions of the Mercedes and Maybach EQ Lines if you just decide to lay the battery intercooler flat down in front of the Front wheels…and make the HEPA Filters smaller and extend the too short front overhang…
    2. Fully Soundproof barrier between the cabin and the rear trunk…
    3. the small rear opening of the EQE Trunk will disappear for a big opening and sound proof barrier.
    4. thank you Motoman for all these testing and insights…we would like to see you piloting in formation flight with your pilot friends and their aeroplanes over the parked testcar of the week…and more droneshots of the cars you Drive…
    5. when the Rolls-Royce Spectre Electric is released the new versions more soundproof versions of the Mercedes Maybach Lineup should be ready…and I really want to know the huge possibilities of a front trunk in a Rolls-Royce Electric with special hand crafted Luggage editions matching the inside Leather colors and stitching…
    6. In these modern electric times the manufacturers should not shy away the adventure aspect of driving and provide full aerodynamically integrated lockable Electric bike transport capsules attached to the rear trailer hitch of the Maybach EQS and Rolls-Royce Spectre Electric…

You should be doing interior design for all the major OEM’s. Your instincts for what should be done to the interiors and UX of these vehicles is second to none. Very cool back story about the location for the shoot. No wonder you were tearing it up through the twisty’s that aren’t your usual shoot road.

Blows my mind people actually considered Tesla's luxury cars at any point. I mean, their build quality was below smallest premium brand models, let alone comparable to stuff that sells at a similar price. A Mercecedes C class has a far high quality interior and is overall a much higher quality car than a Model S, yet the Model S costs more than a Mercedes S class.

I just ordered an EQS 580 (pinnacle) with all the options in Graphite Gray and the Macchiato interior.
They gave me a delivery date sometime in May. I'm looking forward to getting it and, later... perhaps the Maybach version to replace my S600X. I just hope they do something to the body other than adding another 8 inches and calling it a day.
I'm wondering if that charging cord would work with a 50 amp outlet I use for my Tesla and Motor Coach? It charges the Tesla in 8 hours.

Important to note is that this car blows away Tesla on range and range added over a 20 minute stop.
You will not need ANY extra stops on a day's of driving. The efficiency and battery size ensure the first stop will be for your bladder or pie hole, not for electrons. Being so slick aerodynamically, motorway driving barely puts a dent into range and compared to the original Audi e-tron you need a whole lot less energy that even pours in quicker, to get you another 3 hours of driving silence. It's setting a high standard. Consumption pretty much the same as the Model 3 Long Range. But it's a land yacht.

What that system does is make your car cross compatible with every U.S. automatic toll system. Your paying $223 for the transmitter and not a penny goes to any agency of any kind/level.
This is a system that only commercial motor carriers could obtain until this EQS. It also gives a discount on most toll systems. If you plan on traveling with your EQS your a fool not to get it but if you’ll never leave your state, you shouldn’t buy that option.

So they can have a final drive ratio that gives incredible acceleration, while the high revving ability allows high speed. Others don't have that advantage so must choose acceleration or top speed. I owned a 2007 S550 that was 12 years old and had 155k miles on it when I sold it to buy my current 2017 S550 that is now out of warranty. I have found that the warranty claim is largely nonsense. My cars have been beautifully made, reliable machines.
It is indeed very expensive to repair an S-class vehicle when parts age out, but if you can't afford it, you probably shouldn't be tooling around in a $100,000+ car anyway. Using an independent Mercedes mechanic instead of the dealership also helps a lot.
We test drove an EQS 450+ recently Can't wait to get the EQS 580, exclusive trim, that I ordered in January 2022 after the test drive. ETA is around September at this point. Maybe chips will become available sooner. That seems to be the hold up.
Both my wife and I think the EQS is a very handsome vehicle.
We bought a new Lexus RX450h last year that took 8 months from order to delivery. It's hard to get a new luxury vehicle built to individual specification these days.
I probably will not buy other than Mercedes S class BEV's for so long as I continue to drive. I think my wife will stick with SUV's, but she would like the RX450h in a plugin hybrid version.

I have owned similarly priced vehicles and just wouldn't touch an S Class out of warranty. EQS is probably a different story, but the luxury German brands are not yet ready to give up their service center profits, even with EVs. Speaking from experience. Best of luck with the new Merc. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

The tech is wonderful. Inside it seems like a lovely place to spend time. But I'm not in love with the exterior design and I think I've figured out why. The rear of the car has very short overhangs. But the front of the car has a long overhang that is reminiscent of a FWD design like an Audi. If you compare it to a ICE S-class, you notice that the front wheel arch in that car is much further away from the driver door with a shorter overhang. Considering that there is a lot more flexibility in the design when you go electric, I'm puzzled as to why they went with this approach. Was there an engineering mandate like you would have with a RWD or FWD architecture? Or did they just like the upside-down bathtub look of the early 1950s American automakers and wanted symmetry? It's unclear here. This may be better quality than a Tesla Model S in every way, but the Tesla's design is still timeless and even the Taycan is a better looking vehicle. Still, I'm sure it won't be long before I see one in the pickup line at my daughter's school.

I have driven a Tesla Model S and a Mercedes EQS. I own a 2017 Mercedes S550. There is no way a Model S is a luxury car. It's more like a mid level Cadillac. Even my son's Mercedes E350 is way more luxurious. I ordered an EQS 580, exclusive trim, in January. ETA is around September. Looking forward to it.

@@robertbrown7563 that's your opinion. One could make the argument that the Plaid, being the fastest and one of the best handling cars in the world is indeed a luxury vehicle. Do Lambos or Ferarris drive like a Mercedes? No. Different luxury cars drive in different ways. Yet, check the prices of some of these Italian exotic cars.
With that said, from a technological point of view, Tesla has maintained a strong stance in this part of the arena against other competitors. MB is still playing catch-up. Having an array of 3 or 4 large screens is not going to facilitate things as well.

I adore the EQS, but if they actually had had vision and commitment, even if JUST comfort....they could have achieved this car by themselves, 5 years or more ago.
Our knowledge of aero didn't advance much this decade. Electric motors didn't suddenly get efficient. Cells didn't get any denser in last 7 years. We've had LCD screens and light bars for a while.
Merc bided their time and eventually got around to making it all happen. The Hyundai Ioniq 28 kWh charged at 67 kW. So the EQS would get 260 kW with those cells already. 2016 state of the art. Yes, 5 years ago.

    • @AOTanoos22
      @AOTanoos22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Some points are not true. In terms of battery cells and battery chemistry a lot happened in the last 7 years. In fact the EQC & EQA still use Mercs old battery tech while the EQS is the first model to use a newly in-house developed battery with a much denser chemistry. The EQS uses O-led screens, not LCD screens which i dont think were a thing for cars 5 years ago. The Augmented reality Head-up display is another thing that only exists since 2 years. The comparison with the Hyundai Ioniq is not how this works at all !!! Also you forget about the drivetrain that takes years to develop. In fact Mercedes is still developing an EV only drive-train with their F1 devision, focusing on extreme efficiency and performance which will be ready ~2025. Another EV platform for every model between EQA-EQC (sedan&SUV) is in development as well and will be ready in 2025. developing platforms and drivetrains with millions of testing miles takes its time, if they sold this car 5 years ago, that means development and battery tech must have started 10 years ago. Certifying an O-led screen for a car takes months or years stress testing by commission until it gets the approval. This car as it stands would definitely not be possible 5 years ago.

    • @tzarcoal1018
      @tzarcoal1018 3 ปีที่แล้ว

this is not really the case if you look deeper into it...The Screen is not rectangular, 5 years ago large non rectangular screens ( and curved) were almost impossible to come by. It is true that 5 years ago they could have made a good EV and they regrettable did not because it was not apparent enough that this is where the market will go ( consider that you would need 2 years developing so it would be 2014. )
But it would have been a different car.
