  • Our first video on ISS Vanguard was a First Impressions, now that we’ve got over five plays under our belt, we wanted to share our evolving thoughts on this game. Has it held up to numerous plays? Does it continue to be fun and exciting? What pitfalls have we run into?

Well, it was quite a busy day here and I took a peek at Facebook before heading off to bed (at nearly 3am) and I saw that the INSPIRED Team had a revisiting ISS Vanguard video, so I had to check it out even though I was tired. And, wow ... thank you Lola and Sean for your updated look after playing a few more missions (and even mentioning my website). Let me echo a few things! CARDS! Those SECTION CARDS sometimes seem even more important than the dice! Actually there are quite a few cards that literally ARE more important! So, yes, pay attention to those cards. And remember that just because you *CAN* bring more than 10 cards to a mission (especially Rank 2 and 3 when you have lots more than 10 available to you), I *NEVER* took more than 10. And even then I rarely used all 10 during a mission. So, why bury your 4 favorite cards in with 20 other Section Cards? Make them easier to actually turn up by having fewer cards (ie, the minimum of 10). And ... TIME! Yes indeed. I hate to even admit how much time it takes for me to get through just ONE full round (Planet Exploration and Ship Phase). I can't remember, is it Lola who likes to puzzle things out? Ah ha ... the Ship Phase is full of that! Your crew members can be used for many more things than just being on the Away Team! And the discoveries also can have a variety of uses. Puzzling out when to use which for what and where can be wonderful (and very time consuming) and that doesn't even account for the HOW! Sometimes I spend LOTS of time just tying to figure out HOW to get something done. I know what I want to do... then I needed to figure out HOW to actually get it done! I gave up timing myself when I play... it is not in the 2-3 hours time frame at all. Often more like the 10 hour time frame. Which is why I have determined that I need to play this game SOLO ... I'm not sure if others what to spend nearly and entire day on one "round"! So ... while that might sound "bad" (ie, "wasting time"), I think not. If spending 10 hours is wasting time, so is 3 hours. However ... those 10 (or 3) hours are actually doing what you paid good money for! Playing a well designed, well thought out, well told, exciting (and often confoundedly surprising) game! I have a Jasper Gaming Table with a 2 inch or so recessed table... so I can just put the four wood panel "toppers" over it and use the table for something else until I want to get back to ISS Vanguard. It has been a couple weeks now because my current mission has basically stumped me. And I don't want to "give up" puzzling out how to get through it successfully! Because it seems that Awaken Realms quite often RIGS the game against you (sounds bad, but it does make the game intensely interesting). One mission I spent hours trying to figure out a plan on how to accomplish what I knew I needed to do based on the threats that were on the board, global condition, sectors, etc. I wrote down my plan that I came up with and went to bed. The next day it dawned on me ... a MUCH BETTER plan that hadn't occurred to me the night before. These are things I like. But I know there are many people who would NOT find these things to their liking. If you are not looking for an intense game that takes hours for each round ... try a game like DICE MINER or TRAILS OF TUCANA or TSURO instead :) I could play a dozen games of each of those in the time it take "me" to play one round of ISS Vanguard. But both are fun ... just different kinds of fun! I really hope to hear from Lola and Sean again after they get through the two missions that I thought were "interesting" (to put it lightly) :) Thanks for a great second look at a the game!

I think it was really just that last game where we started using the cards more. We often can’t use the assist actions though, because usually we all separate in different directions. Our last mission was Everstorm. Very exciting! 😁

My all in arrived in the mail yesterday. 11 months after this video are you still enjoying it, assuming you've played it again?

Sweet!!! We’re still waiting for the second wave. 😁 We’re still enjoying it (we made two more videos after this one, including a Tips and Tricks video!) although it hasn’t made the table for a month now because of being busy creating content. But we’re planning on getting back into it really soon!
