      @@brucemorgan94 People still use pro tools at a professional level because it has been baked into the industry for more than 30 years. I’ve yet to walk into a professional commercial facility and see Studio one as the only DAW available (I haven’t seen it as even an option at all in my career in a commercial or semi pro facility.) The ubiquity, whether we like it or not, means accessibility and also marketability. If one were to try to open a facility that was not private, and trying to market to freelance/outside engineers, and only use Studio One or Logic or Ableton or Reaper as the only DAW, they would not have nearly as much work walking through their facility as a facility that had Pro Tools.

    Sonar also converts both ways by right clicking on a clip and choosing convert to mono or stereo. I often get stereo vocals that were recorded mid-side and I’d be in trouble if I converted em to mono thinking it’s just a vocal so they can be mono, something to remember to check for before converting. Mid-side Vox actually sound great for big,full, immersive vocals that have zero phase issues. When converting to mono from stereo, the track will end up 3 dB louder due to summing the two channels, however you can turn off that feature in preferences if you want the level to remain the same.

    I never comment on shit but it's CRAZY how many of you guys are completely missing the point while simultaneously acting like know it alls- talking about how "studio one/reaper etc does this in one click" when like, no they don't. They sum to mono with one click, which is a completely different thing. It's super easy to sum to mono regardless of your DAW. What this does automatically is the time consuming, by ear process of actually determining if a stereo file has different content on the L and R tracks- making it truly stereo- or if it's just a mono track (identical L and R tracks) spread across 2 channels for no reason. It's a time saving tool regardless of what DAW you use

    • @niklassilen4313
      @niklassilen4313 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Summing to mono, when you know a track is mono (it's not difficult to hear or verify) is exactly what is needed to be done to halve the CPU usage in Studio One or Cubase for plugin processing. The point is that the whole chain becomes mono. So no, the comments are NOT crazy, they are sound. Got to love your arrogance and see you eat humble pie. Also, if you can't tell if a track is mono content yet a stereo file and you need a 3rd party piece of software to do it for you, then you are in the wrong business..

    Many people send "stereo" tracks out of ignorance. I noticed the trend to happen after the advent of Ableton Live. In that DAW everything is on two tracks, whether it's actually stereo or not. I understand why; it's to facilitate DJ'S who don't want to have to think about "mono or stereo?" on the fly. It makes sense, to me, in that context, but it's still annoying as heck.

      Yeah in Logic you can click a button to switch a track from stereo to mono, as well. But that doesn't mean the track file is ACTUALLY mono. It's good to keep your ducks in a row like the processing is supposed to happen. My biggest thing is everyone sends me guitar tracks in stereo. It's really rare when placing guitar in a mix that you always want everything to be sitting equally on both left and right sides. I almost always make those mono and pan to find the best placement. You might have a stereo effects send, but the main source ideally is mono.

    I'm shocked at how many people are missing the point. For those saying "How don't you know about split into mono" and "My DAW can do this with one click" ... you're only talking about the actual operation of doing the split.
    The power of this software isn't just the action it takes in splitting audio files. The real power is in the analysis it does on every audio file, to determine if the audio is actually mono or stereo. Colt shows this in the video, but apparently a lot of people missed or skipped that part ... you drop the audio files in the software, click analyze, and it AUTOMATICALLY TELLS YOU WHICH FILES ARE ACTUALLY STEREO, AND WHICH FILES SHOULD BE MONO.
    No DAW (that I'm aware of) can do this.
    I'm glad Colt has been responding to a lot of these comments, but I fear it still isn't sinking in. This is much more than just a simple operation of splitting stereo to mono. That would be a dumb piece of software if that's all it did. This is more of an all-around "File prep" kit, and the split to mono feature it only one aspect of it.
    Thanks for doing this video, Colt, you rock!

      Create a mono track in logic. Record some mono audio. Add a stereo insert to the track. Observe the channel auto-promoting to stereo, as is visible on the channel meter. Export tracks as audio files, with the bypass inserts option on. Observe that it still exports stereo. Realize you have to remove the insert entirely or route its output to a mono bus to get the channel to properly export in mono. This has been my experience for as long as I’ve been getting handed these sessions. If there’s a trick I’m missing to dealing with this, I’m all ears. It’s not even the artists actively doing it most of the time - they just pick a channel preset they like, which already has stereo inserts on it regardless of the channel record format.

      @@ColtCapperrune ....and, for the amount of tracks you may manage, I would probably too, it is a very cool app.
      I have a little workaround here: I check the tracks with Mono Deviation and Correlation.... that way you se how disperse or not the spectrum is.... Mono recordings that go to stereo without Stereo FX, are very flat....
      ... and for those which have stereo info, then I would separate the channels into 2 mono; in Cubase 13 you can do that to one or many tracks at a time with just 2 or 3 clicks (even with just one, if you assign that a Shortcut) Cubase is really great.

    It’s a great tool but I just don’t have enough need to justify the subscription cost.

    Just one click in Cubase

      You would still have to listen to each stereo track in its entirety to determine if there's actually any stereo content, or if it should be mono... I'll take this that does it all for me in five seconds.

    Reaper: you can process clips/items however you like.

    Mixcraft 10 can literally turn any track to Mono with 1 click. 🤷🏾‍♂️

    So this “pro tools expert” doesn’t know about the downmixer plugin that does exactly this that has been there forever? Yeah okay

      Completely different than downmixer. Downmixer is just a tool to convert. It doesn't do any kind of analysis. StereoMonoizer actually analyzes each file and lets you know if it is really stereo, or just a mono signal in a 2-channel stereo file. Then gives you the option to convert them to true mono.

    • @JRand927
      @JRand927 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@binksound I know that. That’s why I always couple the downmixer plugin with an analyzer plugin to see if it has any stereo information before I commit it to mono

      @@JRand927 I assume you are "spot checking" and not listening all the way through with the analyzer plugin. If you don't listen to the file in its entirety, you could miss something. What if it's a mono guitar track, and they decided to throw a ping pong delay in the bridge? That would make it a stereo file, but if you only listened / analyzed the beginning of the file, you might have thought it was mono. Also, this process would still take longer, especially if you are handed a folder of like 100 files for a mix, and they are all 2-channel files.
