He can take Luffy on in the sense he isn't getting 1 shot like he is a goon. Luffy was also toying with Kaido during their fight, and you could contribute that to being a part of his powers. I loved the way they animated the reveal of his Devil Fruit Awakening because it made him seem like a huge deal and he wasn't taking any massive physical damage from Luffy either. Despite him not being able to hit him back at all.
I think the only issues I've had with the anime recently (because the pacing of this episode was real good) was the Jimbe knowing warrior of liberation (not canon) and the whitewashing of all the darker characters (colors are just inconsistent since time skip started. Also who does or doesn't have conqueror's haki getting confusing if you don't read the manga lol.

That base clash they added in, as well as all the other anime original moments from this fight like the whole transformation really helped elevate this fight to a whole new level than it was in the manga. This is where everything kicks off in Egghead itself and you were truly able to feel it
It blows my mind that the anime made it look like Lucci stood a chance, in the manga he gets a few panels of getting trolled on by Luffy then gets demoted to fighting and losing to Zoro becasue he not strong enough to even beat luffy's first mate anymore.
The moment he transforms into awakened form you can just see how much his pride was hurt and how fing pissed he is... How much he needed to reassert to himself that he is the predator in this fight and not the clown.
I would argue that freedom fighter fits way better as he actually fights without any restrictions. There is no hate or egde or anything when nikka fights. Just the pure joy of fighting.

Lucci pulled a Vegeta. He let his opponent power up instead of making them fight for it. He probably would’ve still lost but it wouldn’t have been as quick.

But look at his change in expression. When Luffy transforms he cant help to smile. He feels the thrills he feels the pure joy of fighting nikka exudes. When he difference gets clear and Nikka shows him that he is the hunter in this fight (the demon eye scene) Lucci is so fing hurt in his pride and really need to reassert himself as the predator in this fight. He had no chance..
