That is definitely Dave Grohl on drums, he did drums for the whole Songs for the Deaf album. Josh Homme and Dave Grohl also teamed up in the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures. I am seconding the other recommendations to check out Kyuss, one of the most influential stoner rock bands of all time. Demon Cleaner is a Kyuss song where you can kind of hear some of the later QOTSA type sounds coming through.

Dave Grohl also played drums on some of the songs on the Like Clockwork album.

The QOTSA of songs for the deaf was kind of a supergroup too: Lanegan/Screaming trees, Van Leeuwen/A perfect circle, Homme & Oliveri/ Kyuss, Dave Grohl /Nirvana&Foo fighters

Such a callback to a simpler time, when a hard riff, sick tone and relatable lyrics got the earworm formula just right. Glad to see you vibing to a true classic 🤘

I saw QOTSA open a show with this song last night in Brisbane, Australia. They are on to New Zealand now. It was an incredible show

Songs For The Deaf still holds up insanely well to this day and I am constantly amazed by this fact every once in a while. It's not my favorite from them since ...Like Clockwork released but it's full of variety and catchiness, good writing and charming sounds with grittiness and harshness in between. This one and Go With the Flow are both such great earworms too, it's almost unbelievable how they just stick to your mind forever.
Also I'd really recommend The Lying Lies & Dirty Secrets of Miss Erica Court by Coheed and Cambria as one of my personal favorite riffs, not exactly expecting a reaction of it - tho that would be legendary - but checking it out is worth it for sure.

Didn't know you were that acquainted with it. Thought you might have heard it in passing and would recall that once reacting. I myself didn't discover them until some 13 years ago or so. Wonderful band, doing really great alt rock songs rooted in stoner. Stoner is of course rooted in psych which is rooted in blues rock 🙂. Loved the analysis! As usual, seeing you really enjoying a track and trying to pin down why, is always a treat ❤.

This was kinda the soundtrack to me meeting my wife, having been released almost exactly when we got to know eachother. Brings back memories, for sure! Sort of a gateway into more heavy stuff.

QOTSA is from the southern CA desert I lived at for 20 years... they were birthed from the wreckage of KYUSS, which was originally called Sons of Kyuss. These guys have been at the forefront of desert rock since about 1989... desert rock is maybe a touch more curious and experimental than standard stoner rock.
Josh Homme (guitar/vox) grew up listening to his guitar teacher play polka music, which lends an interesting feel when that influence is applied to this kind of music.
Their newer stuff is so much fun. Just released a new album last spring, called In Times New Roman.
If anyone is curious, track 1, called Obscenery, is a GRREEAAAT gateway drug to that album.

@@l3p3rM355i4h JHomme does stay busy, doesn't he? between QOTSA, Screaming Trees, KYUSS, Eagles of Death Metal, and the Desert Sessions, this guy has had quite the career. no idle time, which is good for a guy like him... he might have ended up addicted to any number of drugs.

One of my favourite "pop" songs of all time. The only thing I missed you commenting on is the production quality. I think that is an important point when you talk about why the rather simple riff and groove works so well - they worked very hard on the drum sound (recording toms and cymbals separately) and the guitar tones (much mid-tones, inspired by ZZ Top/Tres Hombres - one of the band leader's favourite albums). And I think they did a very good job - and I use it as a reference when working on hard rock songs myself.

  • @jonathanhenderson9422

As for catchiness, I think fundamentally it's all about pattern and variation. Basically, create a simple pattern, and then find some kind of variation. Perhaps the easiest, most perfect example is the opening of Beethoven's 5th. If you think of the famous motif (Duh Duh Duh DUUUUUUUH), you have two notes and two note values; you have one note/note value that repeats three times, and on the fourth note you get a different note/note value. Even in that short of time you have the basic ingredients of a "catchy" hook. The riff on No One Knows is actually quite similar (three repeated chords and a change on the last chord). The verse vocal hook of Billie Eilish's Bad Guy does something similar too (though it repeats more and has two changes at the end).

Always thought this one was a banger. That's definitely Dave Grohl. He played on this album (Songs for the Deaf). As for QOTSA, I've always felt they were a very hit-and-miss band. Probably more miss than hit for me, but this album and ...Like Clockwork were definitely two of the best rock albums of this century. Most of their other output I could take or leave with a handful of tracks being exceptions. Personally, I always liked Kyuss better, which is the band Josh Homme founded before QOTSA. That band was one of the key stoner/desert rock bands. I love Gardenia from them... talk about a great riff (and a groove deeper than the Mariana Trench)!
