What an absolute wealth of information you packed into this video. Seriously, thank you so much. Between all your examples of notes, triads, 7ths, progressions, arpeggios, etc; all with sheet music and tab to follow along. Really a job well done here, thank you!
I've said the same several times. This gentleman is gold. I find something inspiring, something I haven't been aware of, in every single one of his videos.
I'm persian american and love to play the Dorian mode.... The sound of the harmonic minor and its modes takes me to my roots.... Thank you for the lesson, Sir....
I have been fiddling with this scale so long now, not knowing what exactly that is. This is so cool to see some context and expanded with cords and arpeggios. Totally stealing arpeggios :D Thank you :D
Holy sh** man...what a class!!! For the love of ***, the harmony and melody for the song For the Love of God is completely overwhelming! Instant lover and follower after this lesson...thank you very much for all this knowledge!!!
This is usually the scale I like to noodle on. It reminds me of songs from Gabor Szabo’s Dreams album and the Predator theme. What I also love about it is its compatibility with the Blues scale, you can interpolate between them pretty naturally and get the Blues scale to sound more nasty and dark than it’s normal use we’ve all heard (which doesn’t usually lean on that #4 much…weird since that note is supposed to define the Blues scale, yet rarely gets used)
Excellent video as always, this is one of my favourite scales! I think I got into it after watching the one you did on harmonic minor modes, so thanks for that. It also works well over a minor 4 chord for a bit of tension.
@@QJamTracks sorry, that wasn't clear at all! What I meant was the 4th chord if you're in a minor key. For example if you're in D minor and you go to G minor (like a regular minor 1-4-5 blues), instead of continuing to play D min over the G, you play G Dorian#4. Does that make any sense? The parent scale in that case is D harmonic minor, so really you're just switching between natural and harmonic minor scales, but it gives you a nice tension over the 4 chord (with the Dorian#4 feel) which resolves when you go back to the tonic. Maybe I've got something wrong there, the more I learn about music theory the less I understand it!
wow, I have just made a stream about my friend's band demo from 20 years ago and I pondered if he used Dorian #4 in the solo, or just mixed harmonic minor with blues note - all in all, that kind of harmony is very spicy compared to run of the mill pentatonic or natural minor doodling
I wrote a song with that scale in mind, but I didn’t hear the Eastern sound until you played it. When I play it, it sounds more like a trans-dimensional haunted house. To me, the Phrygian Dominant sounds Eastern for sure.
❤you explain very well I was able to understand modes only through this channel I am after dorain mode because of santana❤ if possible please make a lesson on how to play all the modes of one key in one position for example all modes of C starting at 2nd position of C scale
C Dorian has the same notes as G minor scale. also... C Phryian = F minor scale C Lydian = G major scale C Mixolydian = F major scale C Locarian = no one cares This is why knowing your scales in all keys is so valuable. There's really only 12 patterns you have to memorize. Then it's just a matter of their relative major or minor.
Technically, it's the same pattern as the Harmonic Minor, just with the root shifted from the Aeolian (Natural Minor) Root to the Subdominant Minor Root.
At 1:01, you mentioned its use in Indian raag. Can you please tell me which raag uses these notes? The nearest if sound is a pentation raag called Shivranjani, which has C, D, Eb, G, and A scales (with C as the root note). Thanks.

Michael Denner of Mercyful Fate used this in the second half of his solo in Egypt. I've heard him use it in other solos as well. Cool sound.

Awesome stuff. Thanks so much for all you do for the guitar learning community.
You will own this scale not like a bus, but like a BOSH!
Sorry man, I am just messing with you. You actually made my day and put a smile on my face.

Another great lesson, Rob. I'm so glad to see that you're almost at 100,000 subscribers. That is well deserved.
Thank you Tony :)!
Great video so much to learn here.Have been using this scale for sometime but never dreamt some of this stuff was possible thanks🎸
The short version: Thank you! :D

Thanks! Maybe you mean a Min#11 or Min7#11 chord?

Would love to see what Steve Vai thinks of the dorian 4# version of For the love of god 😂
Excellent video by the way, and very creative example!
Steve Vai experiments with scales and ethnic influences too, so maybe he could appreciate it...or not :)
What a great video, thanks so much!
Nice again, Rob. Like the exotics.
Dank je Gerrit!
One exotic a day, keeps the doctor away ;)
Love this. It bent my ear.

I discovered few months ago that scale is perfect for nasty ass metal riffs. I cannot help myself and i keep composing riffs with that scale.,

I think this scale is the 4th degree mode of harmonic minor scale.
He said it in the video
Yeh! After watching the full video. Sorry!
That guitar *drools*
"For the love of God" sounds evil! :D
:)
You are great as always .. I am also interested how you program your tone on the solo , would you care to share? Thank you!

Yeah !!! ❤
b4 you know it, your ears are hearing the g harmonic minor tonality and then the shit hits the fan....hahaha
;)
Seriously? LOL
There will be a quiz at the end of the video.
Cool stuff...

Hey Rob!
I think of it as 4th mode of harmonic minor
