Considering what Kelly did with the academic restrictions Notre Dame has, it's pretty remarkable. Now he goes to a Power 5 that doesn't have those hangups and will be able to recruit from a larger pool, Kelly might create a beast at LSU.

    • @stevenhayes5295

I think they should play the bowl game. It’s bad for your team. Your team just lost there coach out of the blue and now are expected to play there hearts out for a intern coach? But the team the coach is hired to already fired there coach. The only factor besides having a coach (intern coaches) is recruiting. The NCAA outlaws stupid stuff but not ruining another school season and bowl game by stealing there coach.

Kelly was offered the ND with the clear goal of winning a Natty. He had more than a decade to build his program, but failed to meet the goal and had vacated wins along the way. Look at his record against Alabama, Cinn, and UGA: 0-5. He was headed for 0-6 if meeting one of them again in the playoffs.

As a former D1 athlete, I still remember almost committing to an Ivy League school because of extensive conversations I had with their assistant coach who led recruiting efforts. Fortunately I chose to go elsewhere. The next year he was gone. Head coaching job at an ACC school. I get it. He made a decision for his family and career. But had I gone there to play for him, I too, like Acho, would have had a hard time wrestling with that reality.

Listen, this stuff is bound to, has always, and will always happen with coaches playing musical chairs like their going out of style! But at least Lincoln Riley showed truer (not much, but an improvement) character and decency in his addressing of the coaching move with his players! What Brian Kelly did was pure Bush League to his kids, yanking the rug right out from under them! Sad when u make a promise to your recruits' parents that u will take care of them in every way away from home and then pull even a 360 wool over their eyes (the parents)! Kelly then has the audacity in an apology attempt to say to his kids "I'm sorry it went this way you having to find out from other sources besides and before me"! Seriously he'd have been better off taking the high road and not even tried to apologize because it made him sound more ludicrous! Shame on you Brian Kelly but at the same time you showed the entire world your true stripes! Money and ego trump all in your case - callously tweeting instead of getting your team together personally to inform - what an utter disgrace

Early signing day is the sole reason for the TIMING of Kelly's decision. Kelly knows that Scott Woodward had to announce a coach now, because of the Dec 15th ESD. That's it. That's the reason. And it's not Kelly, nor Woodward's fault.
I disagree that Kelly is merely "chasing the money". Kelly knows that he can't win a NC with the talent Notre Dame gets. LSU has that talent and LSU is committed to athletic excellence across the board, as evidenced by all the recent coaching hires - this is what Kelly means when he says alignment. At this point in time, there is nothing holding back a head football coach from winning a NC at LSU - THAT is why Kelly accepted the job. If Kelly was "chasing the money", he would have let Notre Dame counter.

Brian Kelly brought ND back from the dead and made them relevant again and was only paying him 2.7M a year lol let’s be honest ND looks at their job as the greatest thing since sliced bread and you should be happy just to call yourself the coach of notre dame football their ego wouldn’t allow them to pay a coach the kind of money LSU paid him so there was no reason to have ND counter because they wasn’t going to counter anywhere in that neighborhood not even the same zip code

I don't think it's just the money. I'm fairly confident LSU waved that same nine-figure check in front of Lincoln Riley and Jimbo Fisher, but Lincoln probably saw a significantly easier job in LA than what he'd get in BR and Jimbo probably felt LSU was exponentially more pressure for what was essentially a lateral move.

I agree 100% with Klatt. These decisions were about money… a lot of it, pure and simple. Kelly and Riley were the head football coaches at Oklahoma and Notre Dame! Last time I checked these are two of the top 10 programs in the country. OU and ND have no restrictions on recruiting or TV exposure or anything for that matter. They recruit nation-wide and are always in the conversation for big time bowls and the CFP. We’re not talking about a very solid, but regional program like a Wisconsin… or a program with limited exposure and backing like a Cincinnati. Peeps are acting like poor Brian Kelly couldn’t win the big one at ND because he don’t have the tools to do so…. Seriously?! The Irish have their own TV network in NBC. And Riley…? The Sooners are in the playoff picture every season with Heisman winning QBs. Explain to me how coaching at USC or LSU is going to dramatically improve either’ s ability to compete on the big stage. Because as a college football fan, I’m not buying it.

Acho your issue is with the lack of communication with the team and organization. Let the players and staff know you will be moving on. Timing wise it makes sense because those are the constraints now with early signing. Mainly the issue isn't with the idea of him leaving it's with how he chose to leave. Just be a stand-up guy about it. If I am developing young men, then in my eyes, that includes showing them more than the field. But how to rightly maneuver the world. These kids generally do buy in to the BS of the coach for the school then the coach leaves. What needs to happen ultimately to make this seem less damaging is players getting a better understanding of the business side of college football. There are two hit commodities, player and coach. So as these coaches go to recruit the players they are also being scouted to go somewhere else. Be loyal to the men on the field with you while you are there and be loyal to your success.

So they think a coach that wants to leave their current job for what they believe is a better situation is going to wait until after National signing day. This would set them back in their new position. This situation will happen again unless college football is structured so coaches have time to change schools and have time to get prepared for National signing day. These guys seem to be more interested in personalities and their homer attitude toward a particular team.

It’s not that he left. It’s how he left that’s the issue. Ghosting people at ND? Letting his team find out on social media? That’s the classless part. Leaving isn’t classless. He made a smart business decision.

The reason BK didn’t win at ND and now at LSU was because he keeps getting out coached. He’s a great recruiter not a great coach. That Ole Miss game a couple days ago. That’s on him.

Klatt, it's not "none". There's one coach who has been offered the $$$ and the NFL has called but he stayed. And you have been around and spoken to him many times. You're forgetting Kirk Ferentz. (Yeah, the money was never 9 figures, but it was high at the time.)

I may be "for sale", but there are things that really matter, as well. I wouldn't change my present.occupational position just because there is more money involved. This dude makes it sound like if you get more money, or a lot of money, you will move. Not so. In fact, in that context I'm not for sale.

Klatt's insistence that money is the primary motivating factor in every person's career decisions is either remarkably naive or darkly cynical. Perhaps both. I've passed up higher paying jobs on a couple occasions because I didn't prefer the city or other factors. And I didn't feel any more the loser for it. The real loser is the poor soul who overvalues the importance of money or who uses it as the penultimate measure of a successful career.

That sounds good. And to your point ain't like he's not going to be rich either way. BUT, He still does have the chance to build something special at LSU.

as a nd fan I don't know if Kelly is it. But maybe now there's just no way for nd to be national champs. Maybe nd just cant with the academic standards. I just think it was more Kelly being a good coach not great as to why they couldn't be national champs

Man y’all are talking about Brian Kelly as if he’s poor, that man doesn’t need any money, he already has money, that man wants to win a championship! Y’all are talking about this man as if he’s some poor college kids trying to get to the pros pre-maturely as a sophomore! C’mon

Why can't Marcellus and Klatt hear Acho's point. IT. IS. ABOUT. CHARACTER. You can say eveyrone does it. Doesn't mean it isn't a low thing to do to promise yourself to your athletes and then abandon them. Character matters people. 100 million dollars or no. Character matters. And I thought Marcellus was the conservative?

Joel Klatt is wrong about not trusting coaches. Billy Napier has done everything right in his move to Florida. There are coaches like that. They just don't get all of the play. It's ones who sell their soul for more money that get all the publicity.

Two minutes and 39 seconds you mention Nick Saban I believe Brian Kelly had a 12 and a record in 2013 with the Notre Dame fighting Irish Notre Dame was number one Alabama was number two Notre Dame got deep and you think LSU is going to beat Alabama with Nick Saban come on Marcus Wiley think about it if he could not beat Notre Dame being ranked number one what makes you think he’s going to be Alabama with LSU thinking about it
