  • Here is video of Whitney's 2nd attempt at the bail-in skill in Tallahassee SCUBA instructor Gabrielle's open water class. She repeated the skill until she mastered it. People often wonder why we would make students jump in the water without any gear on then assemble it under water. The bail-in drill encourages problem solving under stressful circumstances in SCUBA. When people are able to stay calm, it helps them better manage any problems in the diving environment. It also helps them with self-confidence so they are better able to overcome challenges. This is a required skill with SCUBA Educators International (SEI), formerly YMCA.

Was too much water getting up her nose?

She was letting her fears get in the way of completing the task successfully. While she had convinced herself that water in her nose was the issue, she had performed a number of other skills with her mask off with no problem. Thankfully by her 3rd attempt, she was able to conquer her fear and perform the task successfully and without any issues!
