When there is a live performance in front of many fans all singers will wear the ear pieces you can see, they are in each ear, to block out the sound of the screams because they could quite easily go off key. They have the music played in each ear so they know and can hear it as they obviously have their ears blocked. But many artists, especially ones that have big dance routines, will have a vocal backing track played just a bit lower in volume than them, just so if they miss a word or have to breath for a second or their voice is wobbling cuz if movement they have the backing track their to be heard also to keep it on point. And when you can hear the crowd, it's literally just that loud that they drown out the music... which brings us back to the earpieces and the reason why. If an artist loses the sound for a second it's so easy for them to accidentally go off key so they need to hear the music and drown out the crowd. Sometimes artists will remove one earpiece, because they can hear the music in the remaining earpiece and hear the roar and buzz and still remain with enough to be on point.
