Her first name is pronounced "comma la" not "kam ala" She's been vice president for three and a half years. Most journalists are getting this wrong?? Good to see Rory gets it right 👏🙌👌
Kamala's strong stance on women's rights will be very attractive to women from right across the political spectrum. Recent cruel legislation on abortion in many red states has terrified many women who fear miscarriages, pregnancy problems, stillbirths or serious complications in labour - for themselves or their daughters.
“I’m a prosecutor prosecuting a sex offender” , was a great line. 🎉 The one time she beat Biden was during the 2020 race when she said “I was the girl on the bus” referencing busing during the civil rights era
I can’t help but roll my eyes when people assign value to sloganeering like this, as if it has any substance. The reason Kamala should win is because she is not from a political dynasty and is slightly younger than Trump - maybe her administration can bring back some forward momentum to the Western project.
It was probably that passive-agressive race-baiting, along with the succesfull attack from Tulsi Gabbard on her track record as prosecutor, that made bow out before Iowa.
@@nabilfreeman agreed. Obviously Rory and Alistair are British, but there is a massive difference in how they are talking about this election to the UK one. There was so much more discussion about manifestos and policies. I haven’t heard them talk once about what Kamala stands for or what policies she plans to enact should she be elected. Good speeches and debates are great, but can we talk about what each candidate will do for the country. At least with Trump I knew he wanted to build a wall…
As a Venezuelan living in the UK, voting on Sunday in the venezuelan consulate, thank you for bringing attention to the political situation in the country and saying plainly it will be down to the international community does about it. But truer words have never been said about Venezuela as Rory said "Things are never so bad that they cant get worse" - We know the government doesn't have the votes but they have everything else - the judges, the military, the control of all the oil and services - they are desperate and can do anything it takes to keep that control. For years, they have killed protestors so they have no problem killing, venezuelans have lived for years without water, electricity and food - but it CAN get worse and I fear for my family. So, thank you for bringing this up and raising awareness and finishing with words of hope that made me cry, hoping that my country will "get back on a sensible path". The only thing I will add is that witnesses from EU for example, have been refused to enter the country to see the election process, so there isn't external witnesses from other countries...
One thing you don't mention about venezuela and saudi arabia is that the quality of oil and cost of production are very different between the two countries. Venezuelan oil is much thicker and more difficult to refine. This makes the sanctions all the more biting because there are fewer refineries that can process venezuelan crude and I believe most of them are in the usa.
US refining Vz oil - Does that also include American corruption… Not much talk on Foreign Policy. K H will not preside over Netanyahu’s address to Congress. Gaza and the American Asian/ Muslim vote? KH’s husband is Jewish. Nationalist Ukraine vote, NATO and the anti Putin/ Russian military industrial policy?
@@billythomasfletcher According to Von Shitzenpantz there is only one and that's in Texas! The different costs of production get factored in to the price per barrel - our own Brent crude is another example.
Frankly listening to and watching the body language of Kamala Harris vs Donald Trump is literally the difference between positivity and negativity and light vs day. The US, the UK and western democracies generally need Kamala to be the next president.
When you said Kamala will be „the shortest candidate ever“ for the US presidency, I thought you were referring to the short time she will be a candidate 😂
True, her speech was outstanding. And I imagine quite “plan full”. She wore a navy blue outfit that looked like a uniform, with high neck, long sleeves, perfectly pressed, with sensible shoes that allowed her to move around the stage easily. She spoked in a natural voice but with a forceful manner and cadence. She came across as the smartest general, the captain of the ship. A couple of things I wish had been brought up regarding the Venezuela election are: the threat of them annexing the Essequibo region of Guyana to get at the Stabroek block (offshore oil) and natural gas. Second: the Barbados agreement. Hopefully Venezuela (and Guyana) is a topic for a full episode as this is far more complex than an election and could become the South American equivalent of Ukraine.
Don't forget the gen Z new voters, especially in those swing states. I don't see Donald Trump appealing to them as he represents exactly what they want to escape at home. Kamala Harris is younger, has empathy, speaks about the future and about social protection which is something the young low paid employees are very sensitive to. I remember when Obama was elected president, a lot of Americans were very proud of themselves; "Hey UK, see what we did, now YOU need to elect a black prime minister!". I remember thinking yeah, but we had our first woman prime minister nearly thirty years ago. Two more since. I guess we'll soon see if the US can finally catch up after 45 years.
I'm a Yank living in the UK and I agree wholeheartedly. Also, I feel that Obama's being elected resulted in Trump's presidency. Obama's victory galvanized the bigoted, backward, least educated segment of America, who resented to its core that an "uppity" black man and his family occupied the White House. I can only hope that Harris and whomever she chooses as a running mate have a genuine shot at the White House. Otherwise, the country is lost.
I’d like to mention Guyana, Venezuela’s neighbour. Maduro has been threatening to annex almost half of the country as huge oil reserves have been found off The Guyanese coast. He has held a sham referendum and amassed troops at the border. It’s very worrying.

The Rest… needs to interview journalist Jordan Klepper. A very talented, humorous & insightful reporter on US politics. Love your show: intelligent, insightful and topical. Thank you.
The irony of the `separation of church and state' in the US is the dramatic influence of `faith'. Race and faith (and misogyny), all play more strongly here than in the UK (ex-pat). That `liberal' is used as a pejorative speaks volumes also. However, I believe that MAGA is a loud minority and the majority of Republicans let alone voters as a whole, do believe in the rule of law and will think twice about voting for a felon provided that it isn't seen as an `irrelevant' ruling by a liberal NY court. This election isn't about being `optimal', this is about `running faster than the other lion tamer', surely all she has to do is to present herself as the sane and predictable alternative. That shouldn't be difficult.
Great speech but I feel she has had new speech writers. Her speech was short sentences and slogans, also the crowd was partisan, I'm still to be convinced her speeches will be that well received. 100% better than rambling 90 minute Trump speeches, but take care. It's apparently cruel to not want child murder as national policy.

As a Venezuelan living in the UK, voting on Sunday in the venezuelan consulate, thank you for bringing attention to the political situation in the country and saying plainly it will be down to the international community does about it.
