I am an actor and content creator with Hollywood credits including roles on Lucifer (Netflix), Starlight Christmas (Hallmark), JT Leroy (Universal Studios), etc. In this channel, I offer insight to Kpop performances using my 10+ years of training in dance, acting, singing and overall performance. In dance, my forte are contemporary and musicals and have done most of my performances in theatre. I totally agree with you on Taemin. The more I watch him dance the more I’m mesmerized with his insane dancing. First of all yes, Taemin’s core strength and body lines are absolutely next level. I’ve never seen him waver in his positions, basically his balance is insane! And we know how hardworking he is. He’s spending hours polishing his moves in front of the mirror. You can even see it in this particular video how he’s observing himself intensely, practically all the time, to the point that he doesn’t even bother lipsynching! And this vibration??? Bro, I’ve never seen any other idol so good at popping! It’s so satisfying to watch! This definitely “his” choreo - he’s the member that draws my attention the most. And I think it was mentioned that he indeed takes part in polishing the choreography, making sure it’s perfect. He’s such an artist, I can’t wait to have him back! Please Jeff, react to his Advice dance practice!
Yes, yes and yes! Taemin’s lines…? Absolutely gorgeous! You can screenshot his dance practices anytime and he looks freaking amazing! His popping…? Next level, one of a kind! Even professional choreographers say idols usually can’t pop, but he’s just excelling at this! (Vroom, Shadow - duh!!!) And yes please, I hope Jeff finally reacts to Advice dance practice 🙏
One word TAEMIN ADVICE DANCE PRACTICE cause throughout the video of that dance practice I was like how can the choreo look even more complex and the fastest choreography by any soloist yet in the dance practice it's clear it is literally like video is in 2x
taemin is just on another level, my eyes keep getting drawn to him.
You were correct in the beginning of this video. Taemin had A LOT of input in this choreo. This is why it feels very "Taeminesque". Taemin is a master at footwork -- all the SHINee members are because the debuted doing it. SHINee is the group that started putting together live vocals with more complex, synchronized choreos. IU stated that whenever SHINee did a dry-run practice, she and other 1st & 2nd gen groups would gather to watch them and marvel. No one was doing it like SHINee back then. Thus, we have these intense choreos today in Kpop.
During the BTS of the dance practice, Mark stated that he felt more confident about this choreo specifically because Taemin went through it with a fine-toothed comb and added a ton of little details. Additionally, in the mini-doc, "The Artist: Taemin" ( th-cam.com/video/m2_MVBxmdyc/w-d-xo.html ), Ten, Taeyong, and Baekhyun stated how Taemin was always perfecting everything about SuperM (he's really a detail guy) and giving them pointers on how to emphasize performances - especially digging out unique qualities within themselves.
If you specifically focus on Taemin during this DP (and you can do this with each member), you can see how much more extended he is, how his hands/arms are never "quiet" or just flopping, the subtle pops and isolations, and his extreme fluidity. Plus, one thing that always impresses me is how, within SuperM, he stays pretty much in the background, giving his junior members plenty of time to shine on their own.
Taemin is also the one who moves around the floor during transitions the most. This is the same with SHINee. The SHINee members all said it's because Taemin is the fastest and best dancer among them.
Taemin's body lines bro! He's another level, I can't take my eyes off him.

It’s funny because what you said about Taemin at the 22ish mark is true I think. He said he likes to refine each move and the expression along with it, thinking about why he would be making that movement. There’s little clips here and there of him altering how he holds a pose and stuff. He’s so unique
Even in such a high quality group, Kai, Taemin and Ten stand out with the effortless control they have in such fast choreo. I love Kai at 1.26, right at the back but putting his whole body into a simple move. His attention to detail and awareness of every tiny part of his body is exceptional.
I'm sure you have, but if you haven't, you have to watch Taemin's dance practice for Advice. I think they put it out on his birthday this year. It is so impeccable, well to my untrained eye, lol.

You said it, everyone has the same choreo, but somehow Taemin managed to still make it his choreo?
While SHINee has very hard choreos they are indeed very different compared to the ones from like NCT and Exo. Taemin in SuperM proves it.
(I'm not saying one is better than the other. I'm just comparing and "analyzing". )
Edit: compared to the others Taemin looks like a cloud - a fierce one.
Jeff I really love your dissection part of Kai. It gives me more clearer vision of his skills and power onstage.
12:14 I think this is one of the reasons why people can't get their eyes off Kai. He never rests he never stops giving his all until the song is over, that is when he finally has the whole release, finally in his 100% relaxation. He fills all the blank space that some people might not have paid attention to.
25:36 I agree with you. He has amazing power control. The hold, release and burst out the power. He knows the exact best time to release the power how much power he needs to bring out and also to control it (hold). Thanks for another great and insightful reaction and analysis! I'm a very recent convert to K-pop who got into it because I love watching good dancing and your videos help me a lot in figuring out what I need to learn more about, so thank you! Also, your enthusiasm makes me smile! Since I had no context (about K-pop in general as well the skill level and growth trajectory of the dancers), I actually liked 100 as much as the rest of SuperM's choreographies, so it's interesting to learn what the general reaction was at the time it was released. Sometimes it can be really nice to get into something with no baggage so to speak, because I've just taken it all in as I see it.
Fun fact: it took me a LONG time to realise Taemin's incredible skill level, probably because (to my untrained eye) his particular style of dancing was overshadowed by the eye-catching movements of for example Kai and Taeyong. But once I realised (because of videos like yours, and also from YoutTube-comments in general) that I was probably overlooking his skill, I checked out his solo work and now he's my personal favourite.
I had a similar journey with Taemin. I definitely put off a lot of Taemin fans on my first reaction (now deleted lol). But the more I watched Taemin, the more I just became impressed and enamoured by him!

Last comment for this video I promise. You are the only Kpop reactor I heard comment about the change in Mark during this comeback. I felt a power in his dancing and a significant increase in stage presence that was not there before. Although he may have got some advice/mentoring from Kai/Taemin, it feels like Mark pushed himself because might have had imposter syndrome being in selected for a Supergroup with KAI and Taemin. So he worked to improve himself to feel he deserved his spot in SuperM

Time and experience with very talented seniors is only going to inspire you to improve of course.
But I feel the focus on improvement and growth in skill has always been a part of Mark's character. He always wants to grow and his members often comment how he rarely stops working (especially in the old days).
When he does have time off, which is precious little, he still calls choreographers that he knows and asks to train with them. He hasn't stopped making practice time, not unlike Baekhyun who still takes vocal lessons.
@@rebeckaroy6790 Of course I know Mark is always working on improving his skills and growing as a performer. Similar to how Baekhyun still takes vocal lessons. Even now I see Mark continue to improve. But during this comeback the growth/improvement was more apparent/noticeable than before. It felt like a bigger/more significant change. So that’s why I mentioned SuperM was the likely reason Mark may have felt even more driven than usual to train/hone his skills
@@artistblue18 It's very possible, I think they all felt they had something to prove at the time :) I still shudder to think about how much pressure they were probably under.
During SuperM times, I just felt like Mark was living his biggest fanboy, baby-of-a-bunch-of-hyungs life. I love how SuperM felt so .... almost relaxed even though they were getting a lot of criticism at the beginning. By 2020 and the full album, they felt even more comfortable to me...
well mark is a main dancer of both nct 127 and dream. Hes also the youngest of super m so his potential is through the roof
With mark's efforts himself, learning by watching his fav bros like Taemin, & especially Kai, he had improve a lot. He's like a sprout waiting to grow.

I feel being ahead of its time and confusing ppl is something SM loves. SM seems to thrives by being Divisive in general w/ songs/concepts. Remember I remember everyone laughing/shaking their heads at NCT’s limitless concept and Aespa’s AI concept (predicting the concept flopping before they debuted)
I agree on that, and I personally love SM for doing that. As people say, SM artists don't follow the trend, they make the trend. The only thing that's bugs me is that the artists get laughed at whenever they release something experimental, only to be the blueprint soon after, without getting credited for it. I so er really feel bad for the groups, I hope they realize how loved they are and that they are indeed shaping the future of KPop.
A song that’s not well-received doesn’t mean it’s ahead of it’s time, it means people don’t like it. And Taemin and Kai are way too good for this group.

Jeff, your detailed description of this was wonderful -- Taemin is the 2nd oldest member in the group but looks like the youngest on this -- His joy really shows in his delivery of this choreo -- I think the challenge of this choreo inspires him. They were all fantastic and I liked the song the first time I heard it -- with this group it is all great. Thank goodness they are making a return.

Yes, completely agree with you on Baekhyun. He may not be the best dancer and KPop but he keeps up with these absolute beasts of dancers. Let's applaud him for that, very proud of him!
Exactly 💯 I'm jongin-biased. But tbh, even in Exo, I really love Baekhyun's dance and his energy the most after Jongin. There's a reason why he's chosen to be in Superm. He able to keep up with the main dancers and also learn so fast
He might not be the best dancer, but we have to admit his vocals are insane!
@@mesyazaable Absolutely, Jongin once said that Baekhyun transforms into a totally different character on stage. And there is a reason that Baekhyun also has solo dance moments in EXO live stages. But you also have to choose, do you focus your energy on vocals or on dance. You can't adlib like he does while also dancing full out.
@@rebeckaroy6790 yes I remember Jongin said Baekhyun always been a fast-learner he could be sitting at the back watching Jongin dance, but he also learn the choreo just by watching Jongin dance. Isn't that great??
@@mesyazaable Agreed! I think it comes from Baekhyun's martial arts training. He didn't have dance experience before becoming an idol but he studied hapkido for years which still means he has a great deal of body control, balance and spatial awareness, good skills to transfer to dance.

- 9:57 I always thought they should have just had Taeyong dance this part by himself. This section always looked messy especially when its followed by a section with the 3 best dancers in kpop.
- This song has SO many good choreography moments.
- 19:45 I believe this jumping move is also in Jopping.
- 20:47 Taemin's vibrations should be put in a museum. His one in Super Car is even better.
- 23:13 This is the move that made me realize how much Mark's dancing had improved. He NAILED it.

I remember reading an interview with Mark and Ten mentioning that Taemin checks, adds, and polishes their choreography. Love seeing you react to these boys again. This is THE song that got me into k-pop. Before that I was hanging around the edge of the pool, but this made me dive right in. I was shocked to discover how many people disliked it!

Say pioneer lol bc that’s literally all sm does in the industry. When nct 127 came out with fire truck they called it noise music and basically dragged them to the end of the world. Now everyone and their mommas does “noise music”. Aespa’s experimental concept was dragged now everyone is going to kwangya in their mvs 💀 don’t even get me started on next level and it’s influence. SM has always been the influence in the kpop industry. Not only the company itself but even their artist are very influential. LSM is a big head with very creative ideas.
I'm sorry I tried listening to nct song before but I really don't like it as how I like some superm songs. Like I thought they're just the same where ppl call it noise music but I really can't stand any nct songs compared to superm. I only can stand the chorus part tho idky maybe it's just not my type

I don’t know If 100 was “divisive” exactly. I mean I do remember people saying that 100 was their least of the 3 MVs released for that comeback. Not necessarily disliked but the weakest. One and Tiger Inside were definitely stronger . To me 100 was a grower but not divisive. Especially compared to other divisive/experimental/controversial Kpop that came before and after 100 in Kpop especially from SM

The initial response to Girl’s Generation’s I Got Love and Aespa’s Next Level seemed a lot more divisive than 100. Even now those 2 still give me a bit of whiplash of I haven’t heard it in a while. 100 never gave me whiplash ( Lol sry for multiple/series of comments Im posting before even finishing this video)

as for the dance (and the song generally) i feel it's so kai-lacking? while i love the boys and they are amazing but i feel that giving kai more (and some specific) parts would have carried the song better
SuperM was not really quite embraced when they debuted. I honestly did not mind them before but yeah looking and listening to their music and choreos now, I just kind of liked their songs now, Tiger inside, 100, Jopping, One, big Chance, Wish you were here. Not to mention their vocals. 💅💅

hey Jeff I don't know if you might have watched this on your own time, but Kai and Taeyong broke down 100 and tiger inside(i think) on the spin-off show for Knowing Bros/ Men on a Mission. You can really see the difference in the styles. Also, the Girls' Generation song that is "whiplishy" is I Got A Boy from 2013.

I'll be honest. When this came out I was one of the ones who hated this song, mainly because Kai had so few lines. But its still a grower. Like I hate it less, maybe because the dance is fire sing it in full. Some parts I still hate, but some parts I like.
Kai will always stand out. He is a tall guy with good body proportions, therefore his movements are bigger and stronger.

ok but like don't we all have a bias that we look at. He did talk about the other members too. It's just that he can really show the clean moves and techniques from the best dancers. Kai has an amazing technique and control over his body. It's easier to talk about the moves when you have a great example to look at. Afterall Jeff is analysing the choreography for us to get some tips and tricks. Kai just happens to be the person to show great moves apart from the other members.

@@victoriab98 everyone is good, yes. But we can't deny the small differences between members while dancing. I love Baekhyun and his voice, but I know in dancing Kai and Taemin obviously are better. each member has their own way to dance.
