What made the original so good is that it was based on a true story. The only other exorcism movie that was good was THE EXOCISM OF EMILY ROSE, another movie based on a true story.
A film made by people who saw The Exorcist, but didn’t actually understand what it’s about. A half-assed rush job made solely to capitalise on the 50th anniversary of the original. What an absolute train wreck.
Figured that’s where it was going when it started. That would have been interesting to maintain the catholic lore of the universe but from the perspective of a different culture.
I admit - the only reason I paid money to see this film was because of Ellen Burstyn, and they destroyed her. "The Patriarchy" line was so uncalled for. Like you said, Believer started out nicely, then the director couldn't stop himself from going the gratuitous route, over-using CGI, and forgetting what made the original so good. All I can say is if this is the first of a proposed trilogy, don't bother.
Read the book. Karras died in victory. He didn’t go to Hell. Blatty discusses this in interviews. But, I agree. The new movie broke the 4th wall with the patriarchy remark. Everyone, including the characters, knew that was a BS line.
It’s been over 25 years since either of us have read the book and there are some differences between the book and film but thanks for clarifying on the Karras sacrifice. That makes sense. Will have to read it again before Deceiver hits theaters and sinks the franchise even lower.
It's not the same demon, that's what makes it odd. The one in Believer is called Lamashtu, and it's a female demon (because afcourse it is - the patriarchy reigns in hell too, you know).
This review was absolute quality - some of the dry and absolutely spot on observations were priceless It had me laughing on several occasions - keep up the good work.
the original exorcist is one of my favorite horror movies, and Im glad I refused to see this. and ofc they had to *contextualize* the first movie with the patriachy nonsense. Like, she wanted to be in the room of her child's exorcism??? Soooooo stupid. I wish the whole house that the UN exorcism was taking place in burst into flames as punishment for everyone involved being so ignorant and unprepared. At least the critics are ripping this movie apart too and arent giving it a pass for being needlessly progressive. as a side, im pretty disappointed in the horror movies that have come out recently for it being october. My boyfriend and I are really big on horror and theres literally nothing to see that we know wont be awful. FNAF is our last hope which is pretty scary lmao
It comes across as dark comedy. She comes into the movie to criticize the original Exorcists only to immediately have her ass (or eyes) handed to her on a plate. It COULD be interpreted as her paying a price for her own hubris if I for a second thought the script was that smart.
@@derkeheath5172 the trailer made it seem like it was going to be all about her and that was the reason why I chose to watch the movie and was excited about it, the return of her character. And then she's barely has any screen time and they poked her eyes out wtf
This movie started off okay and I enjoyed the first half of it. I felt exactly the same way you guys did about that part. But it fell apart after Ellen was brought in. I noticed the 'patriarchy' line too but forgot to mention it in my own review. David Gordon Green has proven himself to be an untrustworthy director. I'm now convinced that his solid performance on Halloween 2018 was a fluke.
Would rather watch Halloween 2018 any day of the week over this. At least that was fun. This had a promising start until they remembered they only make movies for the “modern audience” now.
A demon would personally know God. Like, it would have met God before, and would know EXACTLY what religion is real and which ones aren't. To the demon, bringing in every religion to work together would be like holding a birthday party for a relative that none of the rest of your family can make it to, so you just hire a bunch of actors to play their family members and hoping they won't notice.
Lol, pretty much. The first film established the ground rules. And based on the rules of that religion, it doesn’t leave room for anything else. They needed to tell a new story set in a different world to make this work. But then, it wouldn’t be Exorcist. No legacy to leech off.
To be fair, Exorcist 2 kind of played with other religions as well. Of course, that movie is an idiotic clusterf*** as well, so Green should have known better than to resurrect that idea. Funnily enough, Believer's ending is the same as they ending of the awful parody "Repossessed" with Leslie Neilsen.
If Patriarchy is so bad why I'm I still asked to kill spiders and open up jars for the matriarchy? Yeah I thought that part was just taking a shit on the graves of the 2 men who died saving Regan! It's just a DGG virtue signal in yet another classic horror franchise! Cause thats all that matters these days lol! Great Channel Cheers!
YOU are so right! Quality, integrity, truth: all things of the past. Now it's all about the all mighty dollar. I guess it's yet another example of the apathy and entitlement that seems to be rampant these days.
Chris McNeil should have never been brought back. They destroyed her character. Maybe a phone call scene but that's It. In the og Exorcist, she clearly showed no interest in the occult, she only wanted her daughter to be cured. Her writing a book about Regan's possession makes zero sense. Why would Chris exploit her daughter like that after everything?
Yeah it makes absolutely no sense as to why she’d rather destroy her relationship with her over a book deal than just putting it behind her and trying to forget about the whole situation.
@@hardcutreviewsKnowing how traumatic It was, "real" Chris would have instead sheltered Regan from being exposed to the public afterwards, put her acting career on hold to look after her and maybe leave the country to give them both a fresh start. She would have never risked losing her reputation over a woo-woo book, especially in the mid 70's.
Burstyn needs to take a lot of heat for this. They begged her to be in it, and as part of the original that made her a lot of money and fame, she should have looked at that line and refused to read it. What were they going to do? Fire her over it? They needed her. Instead she utters a line that shits all over the meaning of the original.... Time to stop blaming only studios and writers. Harrison Ford sold out to destroy two legacy characters, but all we hear about is Kennedy, Disney and Phoebe what's her name....Ford agreed to this, he is complicit. Burstyn spit on her own legacy in a movie she was in for fifteen minutes then stabbed off because her prescreens was a bait and switch. Screw this movie and anyone who gives Green another horror movie to ruin.
100% She could have just said, No, stop calling me. Go make your own iconic film. She was completely complicit in it. Most actors don’t get to say they are not going to say a line. She was in a rare position where she held a lot of power and could have shut that down. It’s baffling. Same with Ford. I mentioned that way back when we reviewed the Indy 5 trailer. He keeps agreeing to this trash. It wouldn’t exist if he just said, no this is garbage. What can they do? They are relying on these legends on to come back so people will go see it.
Congratulations Gentlemen on your 1st year,, absolutely the best channel to check out a movie review on, Entertaining and informative! The movie The Exorcist, was still the best horror film I’ve seen, being 17 when it came out, it was at the apex of horror for the boomer’s generation. It changed the look of film as much as Bonnie and Clyde did in 1967. Will I check this out,,,, maybe the first half? Thx again for another solid review!
The second movie is going to have the entire town running around with holy water and crucifixes trying to take down the demon and they’ll feel bad for two seconds because they accidentally exorcised the wrong girl and then continue hunting the real demon like nothing happened, then the third movie is going to follow a new character who slowly loses their faith until they’re possessed for six minutes and then exorcised before the actual climax of the movie starts, and Ellen Burstyn will have no problem beating the shit out of Pazuzu in her kitchen.
Actually it’s not Pazuzu in this movie. It’s a demon called Lamashtu. It’s in the production notes of this film and is from the same Mesopotamian origins as Pazuzu.
Dang, they made that super clear in the film. Why does Chris say, “We’ve met before”, if it’s a different demon? Is she obscurely saying she has ‘met the situation’ before? If so, they should have sprinkled some of the production notes into the script to make it look like a conscious person wrote this film.
@@hardcutreviews it’s weird that Chris says that….it’s also good to note that this demon knows her past the way it knew the nurses past as a nun as well. Demons work as as a network knowing peoples past to mess with our heads. Like you mentioned the psychological attack which was spot on. Sadly David Gordon Green messed it up. Badly.
If they hadn’t done any of that with Chris, it would have been much easier to claim this was a different demon. They just tossed a handful of spaghetti at the wall to see what would stick. It’s the same demon while simultaneously being a different demon. Check.
@@hardcutreviewsthis was addressed in the book LEGION (the actual sequel to the exorcist that was adapted into Exorcist III by William Peter Blatty: “We see through the eyes of others - We speak the tongue of those who sin - We are no one - We are Legion.” All it took was to inject this line and give the loose understanding that in the spiritual realm, demons can communicate and other demons know what Pazuzu did to Regan - but under this continuity, I have no idea what they mean when she says “we’ve met before”. Did they change their minds several times and just overlook the fact that this wasn’t Pazuzu? Also, why not have Pazuzu return if this is the true sequel they wanted and why do the demon girls look so similar to Regan when she was possessed by Pazuzu? Also, why the fuck do these idiots get to keep making entertainment? I could have written a better script on drugs and with a gun to my head.
I found enjoyment in this movie, however, the film The Possession is proof that this kind of film can be done with other religions in mind. The Possession is a Jewish exorcism movie. I liked that film as well and thought the Jewish spin was unique for this genre. The Exorcist Believer could have gone down a similar path instead of trying to include multiple religions. However, I thought the film was okay for what it was, a mostly generic possession movie.
The idea of other religions coming in and showing how they deal with demonic possession are interesting and deserve their own films, such as The Possession. That film doesn’t exist in this “Exorcist” universe. It was a hard sell for us since they came in and just piggybacked off of the legacy and name in a world that is established as Catholic. If they had not done that I think you would have seen less criticism. Appreciate the comment.
I haven't seen the movie but based on your description. By the Christian view, the demon won. The demon killed the unsanctioned dollar store priest because he wasn't a Exorcist and still he was the only legit threat 😂 The demon got a girl soul and convince the dipshits the freestyle religious stuff worked. Pazuzu is going to stop being a laughingstock in Hell for losing to a faithless priest and a 99.9% dead exorcist.

Haha thanks dude. We know Prometheus has its fans. We just love hating on it. We don’t always have to agree but we can all have a laugh together. Appreciate you.
The first one is a masterpiece. It absolutely deserves its recognition and reputation. It’s more of a psychological drama than a straight up horror film. It worked because it was disturbing and made you uneasy and filled either way dread. You have a man who has a loose grasp on his faith going up against the ultimate evil, and these two give everything to save this girl from this torment. The Exorcist Believer is a “modern” horror film. Pulling out all the atmospheric horror tropes with such a shallow execution.
The group that tried to perform the exorcism, remind me of a story in the Bible. Theseven sons of Sceva attempt to remove an evil spirit from a man, only to receive a resounding beating. Rather than the demon fleeing the man, Page 2 WHY DO THE SEVEN SONS OF SCEVA FAIL? the seven sons of Sceva are forced to flee the house naked (Acts 19,13- 17)
If they had a video of Chris talking about Regan and Regan only as a little Easter egg, then had the dad doing research and eventually finding his way to an actual Exorcist then that would have not only make much more sense but made it 100% better. They didn't need Linda or Ellen at all. I get the Haiti spiritual stuff had to come back in at some point because of the start but the OG Exorcist is based on Catholicism. They could have had the Haiti spiritual things not work to drive home they need a priest. They could have kept the church saying no and the priest praying and then ignoring their orders but, you know, NOT dying 2 seconds after? And then actually almost exorcising the demons and the other girls dad coming out with his choice. I thought that was actually a good twist. With cutting out a few other things (like the nurse all of a sudden becoming an exorcist because she regained her faith but still being present and her faith waning, the speeches, the boxing seeing as it NEVER comes up again ETC.) that would have saved the second half of the movie and it would have been decent. At least enough that people would actually want a sequel.
Basically everything you said would have made the second half of this film palatable. But it wouldn't be very modern of this film to take a dump on any other religion other than Catholicism.
Best spoiler review for this dog $h*t film, i had to subscribe for more. You guys nailed it and have awesome chemistry. I just watched this last night and they completely missed what made the original iconic. THANK YOU for bringing up why did no one get arrested at the end, like wtf?
Thanks, dude. Appreciate you checking our stuff out. Yeah, they just gloss over the fact that there are dead bodies and blame no one. Surprised there wasn't a slow motion shot of the white parents getting led out in handcuffs.
When I went with my friend and her son to see it, I remember after about the first 45 min I turned to my friend and said "this isn't so bad". Boy what a change after that 45 min. It went immediately into the dumper. I don't get it. I've never been to a movie that falls apart so fast.
You felt the air suck completely out of the room. Funny how one line can ruin everything. I guess the writers never heard the term ‘subtext’ to get their messaging across in a more palatable way. Now characters just flat out say what the writers want to inject in.
Glad I found this channel , the critique, analysis and commentary hits the nail on the head. Thanks for calling out how woke agenda "diversity" garbage has taken a shit on yet another classic movie's legacy.
If they wanted to make an exorcist movie without making an exorcist movie, they should have made The Making of The Exorcist. That would be interesting.
The very SECOND I saw this was a Blumhouse movie, I knew it was going to be a disaster. I'm curious to see just how many beloved horror franchises get to be annihilated by David Gordon Green before somebody puts a stop to him. All this time waiting for a sequel, only to have this guy get his hands on it. Very sad!
Anyone who thought this was gonna be good, before it was released, are probably, those movie goers, who have season passes. Come on, two girls possessed at once, one black girl one white< Huh? Bums on seats Laddie. Bums on seats. The demon brought his brother along for the ride.
The trailer was better than the movie. They even had parts that didn't appear in the movie at all! When Chris tells the demon "We've met before", It's not true because apparently the demon in this movie is called Lamashtu and it's not Pazuzu from the original...
I know catholics are pretty much the leading experts on exoricisms, but I'd be super interested in a movie that has a different religion working gthrough a possession. You SHOULDN'T (key word) be able to go wrong if you have a solid story. It's universal that 1.) horrible, inexplicable things happening to children is terrifying and 2.) people everywhere struggle with faith/ believing in evil/ believing in something bigger than them... so it should work! I just wish Hollywood would just come up with something new and unique. I'm so tired of revamps, rehashes, reboots, re- whatever 🙄
Thanks for clarifying. Honestly couldn’t remember what she was representing. Wish they had gone into the background for that a little more to make it accessible for a larger audience.
@@pinehawk9600 yeah. So, it's the practice that developed among African slaves in the Protestant predominant areas of the South. It uses the Bible a lot because those slaves were permitted to have Bibles. But it's a similar evolution as Voodoo. Horror, or at least Monster/ demon/ ghost movies don't work anymore. The world has become a much smaller place today with all the technology we see real life horror constantly..
The Exorcist (1973) is Catholic centred - William Peter Blatty was Catholic after all - though I just wonna point out that Friedkin opens his film, as The Exorcist title appears, with the Arabic Muslim chant ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is great), because Friedkin wanted a global sense of good vs evil on Earth. Catholicism is the focus and Catholics win the day in the original - thankfully Friedkin wasn’t ‘modern’ enough to do “Exorcists Assemble!” like in this latest pile of shit.

Like you said, Believer started out nicely, then the director couldn't stop himself from going the gratuitous route, over-using CGI, and forgetting what made the original so good. All I can say is if this is the first of a proposed trilogy, don't bother.
It's a shame. Started off ok then went off a cliff.
Other than the opening scene, this movie has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Total cash grab.
@@hardcutreviews yes! Same. I decided to reread it after watching “Believer”, and I’m glad I did.
Good call. Will check out some of those old interviews as well.
It's not the same demon, that's what makes it odd. The one in Believer is called Lamashtu, and it's a female demon (because afcourse it is - the patriarchy reigns in hell too, you know).
They did a really great job of establishing that it was a different demon by having Chris say… “we’ve met before.” A+ on the script.
Rumor has it Pazuzu will be a Black lesbian in the next entry
She’d have to be the hero.
Of course the white girl went to Hell. 🤣🤣🤣
This review was absolute quality - some of the dry and absolutely spot on observations were priceless It had me laughing on several occasions - keep up the good work.
Appreciate that, dude.
the original exorcist is one of my favorite horror movies, and Im glad I refused to see this. and ofc they had to *contextualize* the first movie with the patriachy nonsense.
Yeah- when even the shill media is trashing it, it's definitely garbage.
Your idea would’ve been the perfect way to use Chris in the plot. These writers are so incompetent.
Competent storytelling comes second. This isn’t rocket science.

Peak toxic masculinity.
I don't like how they bright her back just to poke her eyes out 😡
It comes across as dark comedy.
This had a promising start until they remembered they only make movies for the “modern audience” now.
there always has to be a caveat that one of his identical halloween movies was not so bad. they were all shit, okay?
Nah, 2018 was great and I loved it. The other two were shit.
@@CynsCorner okay.
💯
To be fair, Exorcist 2 kind of played with other religions as well. Of course, that movie is an idiotic clusterf*** as well, so Green should have known better than to resurrect that idea. Funnily enough, Believer's ending is the same as they ending of the awful parody "Repossessed" with Leslie Neilsen.
Pazuzu 👹
The writing was on the wall with he dogs fighting in the opening. Right from that point. At best, it's saying this is a poorly made copy.
A little throwback here and there to let you know this is the same universe while taking a dump on that universe at the same time.
This review made me a fan😂😂

If Patriarchy is so bad why I'm I still asked to kill spiders and open up jars for the matriarchy? Yeah I thought that part was just taking a shit on the graves of the 2 men who died saving Regan! It's just a DGG virtue signal in yet another classic horror franchise! Cause thats all that matters these days lol! Great Channel Cheers!
YOU are so right! Quality, integrity, truth: all things of the past. Now it's all about the all mighty dollar. I guess it's yet another example of the apathy and entitlement that seems to be rampant these days.
The 2 girls acting was good
The second half of the film in simpler terms has commented "Cinema Abortion."
Facts.
For being an "expert" on exorcism, (to me) she didn't seem to demonstrate it with Katherine. Chris really messed up - and got blinded for it.
Such a waste.

The movie reviews we do not deserve but need. Hard cuts
Thank you, sir. The original is still relevant today. This film is a poor attempt to recreate the original with none of the gravity.
Mike's lost a ton of weight
Looking good dude
🤣
The second movie is going to have the entire town running around with holy water and crucifixes trying to take down the demon and they’ll feel bad for two seconds because they accidentally exorcised the wrong girl and then continue hunting the real demon like nothing happened, then the third movie is going to follow a new character who slowly loses their faith until they’re possessed for six minutes and then exorcised before the actual climax of the movie starts, and Ellen Burstyn will have no problem beating the shit out of Pazuzu in her kitchen.
Sounds about right.
Loving the channel. So refreshing. Can you guys do a review of Get out and It follows???? Keep it up.
Very accurate review.

Best analogy of the film I have ever heard. Great job!
@@hardcutreviews agreed lol
@@hardcutreviews it’s weird that Chris says that….it’s also good to note that this demon knows her past the way it knew the nurses past as a nun as well. Demons work as as a network knowing peoples past to mess with our heads. Like you mentioned the psychological attack which was spot on. Sadly David Gordon Green messed it up. Badly.
If they hadn’t done any of that with Chris, it would have been much easier to claim this was a different demon. They just tossed a handful of spaghetti at the wall to see what would stick. It’s the same demon while simultaneously being a different demon. Check.
@@hardcutreviewsthis was addressed in the book LEGION (the actual sequel to the exorcist that was adapted into Exorcist III by William Peter Blatty:
“We see through the eyes of others - We speak the tongue of those who sin - We are no one - We are Legion.” All it took was to inject this line and give the loose understanding that in the spiritual realm, demons can communicate and other demons know what Pazuzu did to Regan - but under this continuity, I have no idea what they mean when she says “we’ve met before”.
I think the higher ups either went through a period of transition or the existing ones forced revisions late in the game.
I haven't seen the movie but based on your description. By the Christian view, the demon won.
The demon killed the unsanctioned dollar store priest because he wasn't a Exorcist and still he was the only legit threat 😂
The demon got a girl soul and convince the dipshits the freestyle religious stuff worked.
Pazuzu is going to stop being a laughingstock in Hell for losing to a faithless priest and a 99.9% dead exorcist.
The demon 100% won. It gave the families a choice and the “Christian” guy played along.
@@hardcutreviews I feel like this embodies the joke of a 100 chimps with time can write Hamlet. Crap movie but at least it makes sense in that way. It's a shame Chris became an ass.

Just found this channel today, and I just love every video I've watched of yours so far. You're like Red Letter Media if they weren't clueless/dishonest about cultural issues and political messaging. You smoothly and efficiently take these movies apart and analyze each part individually and as part of the (hopefully cohesive) whole. I hope your channel takes off soon. You deserve it, and movie discourse on TH-cam would be better for it.
Thanks for the comment, dude. While we still enjoy the occasional RLM video, it is annoying that they ignore cultural and political impact. We don't harp on it but we always make sure to bring it up. We love the format of a couple guys just sitting down and chatting about a movie they just saw but these issues play a part so they have to be part of the discussion. Growing a channel from nothing is a real uphill battle. Lots of ups and downs, so we really appreciate you checking out our videos.

Can’t come up with your own story? Just cram a little DEI into a preexisting story and act shocked when people are like, wtf are you doing?
The first one is a masterpiece. It absolutely deserves its recognition and reputation. It’s more of a psychological drama than a straight up horror film. It worked because it was disturbing and made you uneasy and filled either way dread. You have a man who has a loose grasp on his faith going up against the ultimate evil, and these two give everything to save this girl from this torment.
The Exorcist Believer is a “modern” horror film. Pulling out all the atmospheric horror tropes with such a shallow execution.

@@hardcutreviews maybe pezzuzu identifies as an angel.
I'd love to see you guys take on Exorcist 3 and give it some love. I know the RLM guys did it years ago, but, I love that movie.
Exorcist III is seriously solid.

It’s lulls you into a false sense of security and then… off the cliff you go.
When Chris said "It's because of the patriarchy", that's when I completely lost interest in what the rest of the movie offered...
You felt the air suck completely out of the room. Funny how one line can ruin everything. I guess the writers never heard the term ‘subtext’ to get their messaging across in a more palatable way. Now characters just flat out say what the writers want to inject in.

The trailer was better than the movie. They even had parts that didn't appear in the movie at all! When Chris tells the demon "We've met before", It's not true because apparently the demon in this movie is called Lamashtu and it's not Pazuzu from the original...
Yeah, we’re learned about this other demon after shooting the review. It makes no sense for Chris to say that.
@@pinehawk9600 yeah. So, it's the practice that developed among African slaves in the Protestant predominant areas of the South. It uses the Bible a lot because those slaves were permitted to have Bibles. But it's a similar evolution as Voodoo. Though in Voodoos case, the predominant culture was French, and the French were Catholic, so the practitioners could disguise their dieties or spirits as saints.
