I'm from Massachusetts we never even cut the sunflowers from the stock until just before first Frost then we would hang the tops upside down from the ceiling in a warm dry place probably a good month or more then they should come off the flower easier and then try roasting them..... They need to dry out naturally first. Great idea to feed to the chickens wondering if so much salt would be too much for their diet? I've never raised chicken just wondering
I grow sunflowers year-round but leave most the seeds for the birds and replant the rest. Sunflowers seeds are so cheap it's not worth the effort to harvest for food. I like helping out the wildlife anyways. The bees and other pollinators love them too. A favorite for them all

First time growing sunflowers, we actually thought the birds ate the seed but realized we were wrong and noticed our mistake after watching some videos. We actually threw the whole thing in the compost, seed and all. Keep up the great work and continue to grow and learn.

Oh my gosh... now I want to garden with her!?? My first log-in in years, and I wanted to tell Jennifer that the sunflower heads, if picked earlier, can be grilled and eaten. !! I'm growing some this year, as I have to try it! Absolutely love these cooking shows, particularly with Mom, that show us a celebrity who seems to be incredibly down-to-earth and real. It's precious.
Jennifer I'm glad you showed up on my screen. I would love to see you every day. Sunflowers require pollinators to produce full seeds. If the seeds sink they should be full. I know that's how you determine if pumpkin seeds are full. I never roasted sunflower seeds so I am not sure. I would soak them overnight in just enough water to cover them and enough salt to season them and then bake them out the next day. The oven will dry them out and condense the salt on them. Not sure of oven temp or time, but I would try 300 degrees F for 30 minutes and take a sample to see if they are done. Hope to see you again. Love you and God bless you and yours. Stay healthy.

We had a 12foot 3inch sunflower this year and we still only took 3rd place...but was happy because 1st and 2nd place were both grown by young children.😊 They were proud and that's a good thing 👍
