Kids. Listen. It’s not abt making biggg money. It’s abt the quality of ur life. I’m 37 years old. Most of my life I’ve endured hardship as I don’t come from a good background. I’ve always had high ambitions, but I’m always depress because I put money first instead of what makes me happy. Long story short, studying law is tough, but it rewards u in many ways if u put ur mind and focus into it. Forget abt the money. It will come naturally if ur good at what u do first. That goes to any subject. Second, ur quality of life improves in time. Hard-work pays off in the long run. Dont give up. Law is a good subject provided u throw urself 100% in it.
Yes I understand where you're coming from. This video is more for those people who actually has a passion on the side and chose to do law because of the stable job income etc. I agree that hardwork pays off in the long run in law (your context) but hardwork also pays off in the long run, in doing what your actually love to do (if law isn't what you like to do). To me, law and non-law jobs are almost the same in terms of stress and salary (in malaysia), and what makes it different is the passion and whether you like it or not. I don't know how to put it in words but I hope you can understand my point.. lol I also agree that last sentence 'Law is a good subject provided u throw urself 100% in it', which then again comes down to passion, whether u like it or not. Thanks for the insightful comment Ricokilla :)
this shouldn't discourage yall to study law, especially if learning about the law is your passion. The path of a law student is never easy, because at the end of the road, you will represent someone who needs their rights protected. If you want it then go for it.
I almossttttt giving up this big ambition of mine but then you said "someone who needs right to protect", it build up my confidence more in a split second because THAT IS THE SECOND thing of why I choose to be lawyer. (First and priority is secret but it's not selfish one HAHAH). And the most good thing is my dad work in a field where they count and decide who have the land, how big it was, so it will help me a lot in the future i guess
I want to do law...no one asked me to, I don't care if it doesn't pay well, i wanna do it So yeah...my passion is law. I guess I'm a psychopath then🤷🏻♀️

My aunt graduated from UK in law 5 years ago and til now she is still unemployed because of her family kept on nagging the salary given is only rm2k. for me personally, if with zero experience like that she couldve just taken the job and not listening to others. such a waste of time. And yeah I agree with u Ivor. Stereo-typically people would judge us for learning arts and videography compared to professional courses. It's okay, Ivor. You've done your part a a child to follow what ur family wants (study in law school). So right now, just proceed with what you love. Enjoy your life and if possible, get into online courses or classes that you like such as art and videography, and get the certificate. You can do it, Ivor! Support you and LOVE YOUUUUUU!!!
I swear you're the sweetest person in my comments, always. haha thank you so much!! but wow 5 years of being unemployed? or maybe she ventured in other field cuz that's too long haha. LOVE YOUUUU !! we can do this
@@IvorXianZ yeah.. She got married as soon as she graduated and her husband also nags when her salary only rm2k since she's graduated from UK. But to me... Ermmm... Its better to have jobs than unemployed ahahha. But thats her life tho. I like ur vids like soooo much Ivor heheheheh. Keep uploading videos hehehe. I bleached my hair (not really blonde) as soon as i saw ur video about u bleaching urs hahahaha.
@@ika345 yeah. They have to undergo a training for 6/9 months in malaysia after they graduated if not mistaken. Correct me if im wrong. But my aunt didnt finish the training. So....... Yeah.
Actually I study law and it’s my passion 😀 but I totally get your point, my parents forced me to study medicine and I was really unhappy there... Now I totally feel beeing myself 😊
Do we like... Need anything to study law? Like Big brains, & talking back? Cause I wanna be a lawyer but I felt like I couldn't cause my sis keeps roasting me & I couldn't roast her back..
I'm actually a first year law student studying in Malaysia public university. I really like your video because what you said is like bringing the reality life that I should faced after few years in front of me. I am afraid of not earning a high pay in the future because it is definitely not what my parents want. Not only that, I am also kinda lost for not able to imagine how I will be after I graduate since my personality is not like those who can work hard and sacrifice their sleeping hours just to complete the task. Thank you for giving a rough idea on how my future life will be and I am starting to worry about it haha. Btw, you are so cute.
awww thanks! haha glad to know there is someone out there actually knows being in a rat race working 9-5 for something you dont like is toxic. Even for your family, cheers to that. I may not know you but I really am excited for your future with this mindset. Go gettttt it !!
In Malaysia, people feel pressured (usually by family) to do degrees considered "high paying" without considering the many years of labour (and torture) you might actually have to experience lol. I studied architecture and although I enjoyed my uni life, I HATED ARCHITECTURE 😂 Don't dedicate years of your life to something you hate!!! Listen to Ivor!!!
YESSSSS they encourage going for physical work like building and stuffs because that considered as 'physical struggles' but they don't see the 'mental' struggles in professional field because it's 'invisible'. Thhank you Samad
@@IvorXianZ yeahhh but we wanna make money thoo 😂😂 can we get training contracts in the UK with uni of london external programma llb?? Plzzz answerr means alot btw been to malayasia its got good food lol
I did my law degree in the UK, but I'm thinking of doing the CLP in Malaysia when corona dies down. I don't regret doing my law degree, even if I was unhappy, I like the skills it gave me and I still do TH-cam on the side!
yea true, I wouldn't be as talkative and fluent in English if I didn't go through the whole law process. It hits different when you''re actually working in the legal field... all the best babe!!
As a child I wanted to be a doctor, well to be specific, a SURGEON doctor, and I wanted to go to medical school, but as soon as I turned 15 I couldn't get accepted to study medical science course due to bad marks, so I got into business, I was upset, but on the journey of learning business, I fell in love with the subject and I find it my style, and while studying it too, I fell in love with law, I've heard many times, law is intense and hard af, but I know, nothing is easy in this world, I love law that I watched a court case video, I learn the basics of laws in different coutries, and some people pushes me down, and I am here trying my best to get into Law school and not regretting again after losing my chance to be a medical student, but I felt relieved that I'm not a medical student
Truly love your content, I can't deny we think alike in this matter. I wanted to be a fashion designer, but my parents said it's a skill that can be learnt during my free time and I can just make it as my side income. But, the reality that law school isn't easy, it breaks me down after 4 years of study. So, I won't recommend llb if you're not sure on what to pursue, but for the sake of making your parents happy, just finish em.. All I can say, if you have talents, don't waste the God given gift. Peace.
I'm just glad I didn't drop out. Thanks to my parents. I wish I was naturally passionate about law but life after graduation feels better than the life before lol
I'm a fresh grad who studied media & communications and now currently a full-timer in one of the big fives in advertising! I would say that it's honestly not worth getting a degree in communications even though it provides avenues for networking. I honestly believe it's much more important to use the time to upscale your portfolio through work + industry experience etc. applying for internships at creative/ media/ production agencies because this will give you an even better network circle. Whereas when you spend so much time in uni studying for exams, you lose time in the more important areas/ may not have the drive to attend all these networking events. Also, my school didn't organise much networking events tbh haha :P And personally, I did not make good connections (etc. school mates) during my time in school but my networking solely came from my internships which led me to my current job :) For those considering a career in media, I highly recommend building your own brand/ portfolio and get a diploma in media & comms rather than A levels -> University! It's a fast track that lands you in the same position as uni grads :) Just an honest tip!!
That's very true! Internships may be a better option but in order to have internships at media agencies, they'd need to look at your university degree too like what you're doing...unless we have spectacular porfolio to show them otherwise, which if I were to choose to study law instead of mass com I don't think I'd even have time to do media portfolio. HAHA Diploma sounds not too bad for a shorter time frame than a degree! good one! Thank you for this !! :) Glad that you are somewhere you want to be !
Ivor Xian Z haha good point! Thanks for that too :) wishing you the best in whichever field you choose to venture in!! Btw, I think it’s still great you got a law degree. It’s one of the few that I believe, really develops your critical thinking & problem-solving skills which are highly valued in every industry. You’ll go far! 💪🏻
CLP student passing by. Couldn’t be more agree. But still I don’t regret taking law. It’s just really not something I’m passionate about. Keep it up! Subscribed :)) ❤️
hi ivor! i'm new student that taking foundation in law. and i admit it that i choose law bcs i have interest in them and my late grandfather wants her grandchildrens to be in legal field but no one has achieved that yet so when i want to submit the upu system, i put law as my first choice because i thought it was a hint for me and at that time honestly, i'm still confused about my ambition so i just go to the flow and took law. now i'm here studying law, im in my week 3 now. frankly, at my first week i had mental breakdown bcs everything don't looks like what i imagined, and when i read law books im so BLANK! i dont understand anything, that time my interest in law slowly decreasing. But when the day passes, im decided to just finished my studies with a better grades and take a different path in degree later. i think i want to take business (accounting / finance) but i don't know if foundation in law can enter for that degree. What do you think of it?
plus, if i continues my studies in law, i don't even wanna be a lawyer that work in court, take chambering and so whatever. I know that not all who take degree in law need to be a lawyer but if we think logically, i think even i take law or business i will end up to be clerk or something.
haha yes I had the same experience too. Trust me no one knows what they're doing for the 1st half of 1st year in law school...my time I had to do Public law and English legal system, those made me wanna die -.- So yea back to urs, it's ok to feel lost now without directions because we havent' tried doing other stuffs to actually know what we want. So I strongly encourage you to take internships, be it in a law firm or whatever, to test the water, during your sembreaks. it's ok to take gap year and think about it. If you're confident with accounting then you could try doing internship in accounting firm. when I was in Alevels, I took accounting subjects and law, turned out I hated accounting so I went with law.....degree....hahah
hmm...how about studying Tech stuffs? the demand for computer science graduates to be software or web developers is higher than any of the field now. Good perks, able to work remotely and you're kinda in the niche now that everyone's doing law and accounting etc
My situation was very similar to yours! Up until 17 I wanted to pursue a music pathway, even during edu fairs, I would ask each institution about music courses. However, I switched pathways when I turned 17, not because of the misconceptions and parents’ thoughts. It was to my understanding that due to my background, it would be a wise choice for me to pursue a humanities course to expand my qualifications for my career. Despite that, music and filming will always be my passion, and I’m pursuing my tertiary music qualifications while pursuing college. Well, the best of both worlds! Edit: No one can stop you from doing what you love. Even if you have to do something you don’t, you can still see the silver lining ☺️
@@serenasmith1662 yes, my dream was to be a singer, it still is. But I had to think “realistically” and in my area it was hard to even be a singer as my main job. So I had to pursue something “real” and solid
@@ItsEvaNg thats exactly my situation. I am looking forward to study either psychology or law , but music is my hobby and at least i am able to have access on here amd listen to what i like amd sing by myself. Some people dont even have this privilege, so i try to be greatful.
the thing is i do want to become a criminal lawyer and i love memorizing and i am quite talented at it. but the thing that is stressing me out is the pay, i am going to study law in Canada, so do you think the pay is going to be good?
According to Google: The average Lawyer salary in Canada is $105,669 per year or $54.19 per hour. Entry level positions start at $53,500 per year while most experienced workers make up to $145,158 per year. All the best!!
I feel you, your story has something relevant compare to my life. Im currently pursue a Master Degree in Law and i had to say i am struggling A LOT back where in Bachelor degree and now. At this point, im on decision to choose either drop out or continue it. The struggle came from when i start to reliaze this is what i am not supposed to be (this idea is from my family - society - some friends in college) who "guide-influence-force" me to study law (finishing Master of law) :/
Yo Elvan, since you're in it already for Master, probably few months left! Hang in there!!! I know how stressful it is to go thru examinations when u don't even like what you study and probably got no use in the future. Get it done and dust it off, and then only try to venture on something that you like!
@@IvorXianZ i apreciate your idea :) i have this suggestion last month ago and some perspective like "be grateful in this position" - "endure the pain" - "positive thinking" - "keep swimming". I follow this kind of principle (motivate me in progress) but its keep sabotaging me (mentally) while i writing my "thesis" its feels burnout :/, and this inner situation get me some mental health problem right now (ex: depression/anxiety). And some External factor like covid 19 situation its making me "quarantine" like i stop going to the gym, hang out with friends, go to library - cafe, or be productive and etc. Right now im kinda feel lost :/ and start to learn about "what life is", doing meditation, be gratefull, self-help, self-aware, manage "the mind" its does Sounds like spiritual stuff lol. While im learning those thing, i did stumble watching your video talk about law and commenting/responding your video right now lol 😆. Right now im still researching the answer to "drop out or "continue" master of law, what really fits in in my situation 😕 or should i say "best legal opinion for this cases of my life" 😥.
I just finished my SPM in march (I'm pro max batch).....I WANT to further my study in law because my mother is a syarie lawyer and she also has her own company...my goal is to continue her legacy and upgrade her company to have both syarie and civil law service..wish me luck😢
@@sideeyeking my mother is a syarie lawyer at her own company...my mother can get around RM 4500 in a month...it looks unreasonable but here's a thing.....There's a problem.. fyi, lawyers get money from their clients.....In my mother's company, each of the clients must pay around RM 3500 to my mother and RM 1500 as a deposit. Almost every single day,my mother can get at least one new client and if you count,my mother can get more than RM 4500 in a month like I mentioned earlier...but the problem is the clients always don't have money🥴..and after they heard that the deposit is RM 1500,most of them cancelled 🥴..and if you're wondering,RM 3500 (RM 1500 deposit) for a case is actually so cheap!!! My mother have other lawyer friends and most of their bill for a case is way higher than my mother's!!! So for my mother's case, the conclusion is the payment isn't really reasonable but it's not because lack of clients but instead the clients themselves don't have enough money 🥴 I forgot to mention but If you're wondering,my mother's company is at Johor Bahru...maybe this will not be a problem if the company is at KL...and one more thing,my mother's company only has SYARIE law service...there's no CIVIL law service....and obviously,if you have both, you can make a lot more money.
@@justinbiebermalaysia1335 omg seriously thank you so much for this information. I'm gonna take law too . Plus .. what happens if you don't have any clients when you're a lawyer? I take art as an elective subject in stpm. Its not easy. Not to mention how expensive art supplies are, its going to be a burden for those who dont have rich parents. Its so stressful, a lot of critiques from lecturer. Now thinking about pursuing degree in law bcs im so done with art but idk, still in dilemma :)
Congrats Ivor for your long call!! It's never too late to pursue your interests. Same like you, I'm not willing to trade my labour & time doing something that I'm just not sure if it's for me. The initial stage is the hardest, because it will require enough courage to tell parents & makcik pakcik about our intention. Anyhow, you do you! All the best :)
thank you so much! glad to know there's someone out there has the same view. Everything seems unsure at age 25 haha. Thank you! hope you get to where you want to be too
I’ve always loved Criminal law but my mom wants me to be a veterinarian and I don’t want to disappoint her... I love animals and would love to help them but it’s not my calling, my passion and I don’t have the guts to tell her She thinks that just because I said I want to be a veterinarian when I was five I’ve stuck to it
Well I think it really boils down to a misconception that "we can never find our passion" or that "we are not passionate about anything". No matter how clueless you are, you have to believe that many people somewhere far away have a similar personality as you and are doing something passionate, which you don't have any clue of right now. In short, everyone has a place in this world, you just need to find it.
Actually, it depends on our intentions. It’s not always about money, but we need to consider our interest and passion as well. For those who’s thinking of studying law find something like videos, blog or whatsoever to encourage you. There are a lot of people enjoy studying law including me. Goodluck ❤️
exactly my point which is to focus on passion. I loved studying law but practicing law in my country killed the passion...working and studying are 2 different things :/
Actually I’m struggling what to choose in my university, I want to study law, but not clear about it. Language is my second passion however my parents just want me to learn finance and stuff like that. That is not my interests and I’ve been told for hundreds of times what my life is going to be if I don’t choose finance and business. That’s actually ridiculous and I just really want to learn what I like.
I truly understand how you feel as I am actually feeling the same way currently as well. I feel lost after graduating from law school especially as a Malaysian.
Hi Ivor! This video just showed up in my feed! Thanks for sharing your experience, and I'm glad you're pursuing your passions! (Still practicing law in North Carolina here.)
I watched this video after my spm in 2021 when I had a slight interest in law. Now I'm about to graduate and get a diploma in communication and media studies. At this stage, I am once again contemplating to study law for my degree. Media is great and all but I feel like it's not challenging enough for me, which is kinda why I want to take law. Also, I'm doing my internship now in advertising and I'm not sure if that is what I wanna continue to do in the future. Any advice? I graduate in June 2023 BTW and I'm aiming to study at UM. I know where I want to study but not what I want to study.
omg we kind of have the same personalities. honestly i wanna pursue my studies in music too but i was forced to study law but hey i don't like public speaking or whatever that needs speaking ability in public, it gives me an anxiety. thank you for sharing your thoughts btw!
3 years after this video dropped, I'm looking up "What you need to know about being a lawyer in Malaysia" and here I am. I'm in my first 2 weeks into being a conveyancing lawyer and thinking of quitting being a lawyer altogether. Getting paid 2k as a junior lawyer in Kelantan, got passed some files that are really messed up and delayed because no one picked them up after the last LA left (though they prided themselves with having senior staff who are on the same level as "lawyers"). It doesn't feel like "hard work pays off" for me personally. Always been a perfectionist, over-achiever. Got straight A's (it wasn't easy), chambered at one of the most toxic workplaces with a boss that yells over every little thing, doesn't admit her mistakes, makes you feel like you're useless and staff who talk down to lawyers, openly admitting to thinking they're better than lawyers. Anyways, back to the point where I don't think hard work pays off. I don't. Truly. I've been on clutch mode for as long as I can remember, always under constant pressure to be perfect at what I do. It came to the point where I don't enjoy it at all. At first, I thought I wouldn't mind doing coveyancing my whole life, but as it turns out, I'm starting to hate it. I'm not trying to discourage those who are considering dabbling into law but I echoe OP's sentiment. If you don't have the passion for it or if you're pressured into getting into law school because your family pressured you into it, good luck. You might actually like it or you might end up hating it.
I was searching for tips on studying for law and this video popped out, and...I am currently in my first year of law school and I really don’t like it, I don’t enjoy it at all, I feel like I’m struggling so bad that I NEED SERIOUS HELP. I was forced by my entire family coz they think that only professionals can earn more money. No matter how I talk to them about it, they just won’t budge and just say mean stuff to me. And yes, I do have passion in music as well, I want to be an artist. So now I’m just here struggling and I always felt inferior to my passionate classmates and I felt so incompetent...
I feel you... After watching this video, it woke me up to the reality that's hitting me hard. My parents kept judging me of the things I just wanted to do. All I wanted is to be happy yet they keep stealing it away from me and I knew from the very moment they talk shits to me, they would regret it. I knew that I AM GOING TO REGRET taking their irrelevant advice just to cut the wings I'm making. Girl, don't you dare let others manipulate you of your passion. You out of the whole world know what you want to be and YOU DONT HAVE TO HIDE IT. Be proud, FIGHT FOR WHAT YOU LOVE! Live with no regrets-- this is what I always keep in my mind all the time. I am planning to take psychology because of my passion for social science and it just hypes me up. Remember, NO COURSE is easy. Everyone gets through it a lot and it can never be changed. But with passion and love for the things you do, it'll the best thing you'll ever do to your life. They dont define you, your own hopes, plans, and dreams do. So go ahead, kick some butts on those musical notes and show your family who they've been judging all along. The real success is found through HAPPINESS. It's not all about the money and fame. If you aren't happy of what you're doing, DONT BE AFRAID TO CHANGE AND EXPLORE MORE! There are a lots of things in this world you can explore on, it's gonna give you a wonderful life. Hope you will find both happiness and success. Follow your dreams, no one's bringing you down. YOU CAN DO IT! Love, Julia
21st like! Hey thanks for sharing your story with us. I absolutely relate and feel the pressure of repaying our parents for being so good to us. You are in such a powerful position, people would die for. Continue to push through and I know you will enter into a successful career. Keep your chin held high. We got this!
My dream job is to create an aesthetic cafe in Korea with my best friend that left my school, I’m not sure if I’ll ever meet her again, but I hope we can get into the same college or university :)) Another dream of mine is to become a famous writer, while living in the peaceful hills of Switzerland, I think you should pursue your dream of being a TH-camr, but keep studying law in case the TH-cam thing doesn’t work out. I’m Malaysian too, and I understand the pressure :)
Being a lawyer seems one of the only intresting things to me ever, but my passion doesn't matter because I'm a horrible student with untreated adhd from an early age
I'm watching this after taking law so that I can check if I relate to anything at all. It's Cool. I don't relate I would love to understand everything to do with law and think critically and have sensible arguements and understand all perspectives.. ahh But yes, seriously, take whatchu enjoy studying.
I am so nervous for university, cause soon in a few months i will enter uni pursuing degree in law. It totally shocked my friends since i am always more to art, but law is my parent's choice (i don't hate them). My personality are very opposite to lawyer. I hate reading, studying non stop and constant pressure. Wish me luck ;(,,, P. S: but I've made a deal with my parent to let me apply for police officer after finishing my degree :) I will finish law degree and give the certificate to my parents and I will do whatever I want to be after that,, an illustrator, photographer, riding a horse every weekend, and a uniform officer! Hopefully journey as a law student would change me into a better person, person whose are intelligent, read a lot of books, wise and independent. Looking forward to get out of my comfort zone eventhough it would be somewhere i didn't wish to.
It's ok, your personality will change to be more of an extrovert as your grow and especially when you start working. Lawyer or not, communication skills and being vocal on things are quite important. Yessss getting into police with your law degree will probably waived some of the examinations for police officers or start with a higher ranking i guess. Wowww love how you have so many hobbies and all plan out! great future ahead :D
Hey it's me sid from Pakistan , i just decided today that i should study law but it isn't my dream , my dream was to become a doctor but due to limited seats in my area i scored a little low , i hope that i don't regret later of what i have decided today 🌸
Do you want us to be a TH-camr like you or be an attorney living a lavish lifestyle in california.people don't be misled by anyone follow your own dream
its not misleading, she is just showing the other side of the coin. A lot of young students in Malaysia, take up law thinking they'll be "rich", but its not the case, if you hate it, or suck at it. that "lavish" lawyer, either loves it or is on anti depressants (im in the legal industry and most of my friends are on medications from high stress) and doesn't know a way out. Do what you like. if you don't know, like nothing, can do law. :) but know that its a lifetime commitment, if u want to actually make money. I actually appreciate that Ivor did this video. If you don't like office admin work, paper work, research work, reading, no weekends from 18-30, ok do law. after 30 you can reap the benefits of it, if u last that long.
Even though I'm a law student , I'm seriously fucking hate learning law . I have a passion . I really would like to be a model and travel blogger . I told my parents what I'm up for it but they told me back I'm talking bullshit ! I can't deal with it and giving my passion up . I have no idea how I can escape from this shit. 😑
Dude idk but from what I've seen good lawyers in Lebanon make bank, my friends lecturer made 500k$ on a single case and another lawyer made 800k, now that's working for corrupt people but still we can make bank here. Plus going to law school in France is amazing. Oh and I'm majoring in banking and finance and considering double majoring law.
I wanna be a lawyer although my education results was not that good for now but I still hv chance to study and get a good result. I really hope I can be a lawyer even being a lawyer is too much for me but I really hope I can change the world a bit by upright justice helping those who hv trouble but didn't hv enough money to pay for law fee and also those who lack of law knowledge especially for those not living in town or mayb the elder one. I don't really care how much I earn as long as I can eat stay and buy things which needed (but for sure I did hope for more income if the situation allow) I will work hard to archive my dream and I hope one day I can proudly announce that I am in law scl
Its too latw for me im stuck in articles / internship. What are you doing now? In South Africa lawyers also earn very little i earn less than half a teachers salary and a lot of graduates don't even get minimum wage. A cashier can earn double a law graduate!
im in my final year of law school and im planning to finish what i start including going for chambering. But to be lawyer afterwards maybe not. I want to explore my other interest ( which i dont hve rn) but im worried as well. Same as u, i dont regret taking law degree but i just dont hve the passion to continue being a lawyer.
YESSSS finally there's actually someone having the same idea. It's ok take ur time, the world is on pause now anyways haha. EXPLORE WHILE U CAN! good luck TIA
I can totally relate to you :'))) Back then I had the passion in doing web designing stuff but I chose law instead lol now I just finished my law degree and i am quite anxious thinking about going through pupillage with low pay especially during this pandemic.. 😖😖
yeaa omggg it's not too late to pick up web designing now!! the demand is high for that instead of lawyers... At least u know what you are passionate about, some people are still looking for it and stuck in the rat race cuz they didn't know what else to study/work
balance it by getting a job with moderate working hours so u can work on your passion (in my opinion). But do it while you don't have any liability in life...like if u have a kid, passion has to be second place sadly :(
I’m taking film degree and yes art degree is not as easy as what yall think 🥲 the creativity we needed for each project is really not something you can just work and get it right the first time ! I really like your video and keep it up !
This is very much an Asian centric sorta video. My parents here in the UK told me to NEVER go to university so erm... cultural differences haha. That said I think I’ll take my parents advice, uni is too much hard work.
oh what a surprise , wish my family have that kind of thoughts :) , ik it's for my own good but, i couldnt help but feel like going to uni are but a waste of time as theres kinda many unemployed universities student in my country ... but my family will be condemning me like "what're you gonna do if you're not going to enroll in uni etc " , uhm so may i ask you what'r you gonna do after finished school ? no offense btw... sorry if theres smth wrong in my words
@@nina-hm2io may I ask what country you are from? Also I’ll say that I have a few things in mind for when I leave college (which in the Uk is not the same thing as University at all and is free to attend unlike UNI), I will hopefully get an apprenticeship at the UK border force and I’d like to save up to have my own business. I’d also consider becoming a parish councillor (which is unpaid) to improve my community so yea. I have a few goals and of course this is all as well as wanting to have a family but I personally think you can get more fulfilment out of volunteering and more money out of jobs than going to uni but then again my country is very rich and their are lot more jobs than in poorer countries.

This is why Britain took over countries so that they can make their legal system as common law and put extra stress for future lawyers when they could have just implemented a civil law system, which would have been so much easier. Either ways, it is interesting how even in Malaysia is the same system and they have a level like Britain.
hii! is law a really dry subject? i've been researching and like i heard from many people that law requires a lot of memorisation and research etc.. is it true? is it more memorising than understanding?
Yes law school requires you to memorize loads of stuff for all your exams. Problem is once you're done with your exams, you tend to forget 80% of the things you learned/memorized.
I AGREE!! 🤣🤣And I also thought I could be a lawyer to fund my future dreams.(yeah, it’s kinda stupid) But my parents do support me for my Dreams and they do know the greatness of media and being a TH-camr. I get the memo even though I haven’t watched the whole video. I accept your advice, I mean look at me, I got 80 subs on TH-cam at 14.(it’s not easy, but worth it) Btw, thanks😁😁
I have a Chinese friend who is in charge of the whole law school. After 7-8 years sharpen your skills if you're any good you'll be on top of your games
nothing against law but with 7-8 years in other field could also sharpen that particular skill but maybe lesser years if you're in it with the right passion.
Recently , I applied the course that relate to 'law' which is criminal justice ? Are they the same thing the way it will become more stressful like you've said before ? Because what I know about criminal justice is to learn the basic things about law but not to becoming lawyer. :)
I did my A levels at the so called "Rajasigham college" but thank god dropped out of Law and started pursuing my passion (Computer science) and thanks to that fateful choice of not pursuing law and make Rm3500 per month after spending like what Rm 150k ++ on student loans like some of my friends that went through with it now I make $153000++ USD (per year ) ($12k++ usd per month) working remote(WFH) for Google. At the beginning all of them even some lectures at BAC asked me like " Eh computer science ah why leave LLB its more prestigious and pay well than a IT Technician" well too bad I didnt listen to them .

hahah foundation is still early~ u can try doing internships to decide whether u like it or not. But if u dont like studying law then most probably practicing law is gonna be hell for u haha
@@camela723 hi there! First off, it's tough because there are many things you have to memorise. Definitions, figures, law cases, provisions and acts and the list goes on and on. Second, the assignments. Law assignments require a lot of research and reading (the facts given have to be correct and so on) Third, you wouldn't have enough time for yourself. Idk if this is just me and my circle of friends but throughout my one year doing foundation in law, the students would always be busy reading, making notes, preparing answer sheets for quizzes. It is safe to say that I would open my law books everyday because there are so many things to do and you CANNOT procrastinate. But, do not worry too much. Going to law school is fun. Like SO MUCH fun. You'll meet your type of people. The confident, competitive type of people. Law students are very friendly and easy going. Saying that the friends I made in law school eases out my stress and all is such an understatement. Also you'll learn so many things. Some of the things you'd be surprised to hear. And these things are only taught in law school. And I tell you what. I was scared too you know. Stressed and barely had any sleep lol but my final semester result just came out yesterday and I'm graduating with cgpa of 4.0. YOU GOT THISSSS
Girrrrllll!!! I love you so much, you captured every crappy moments of my life sitting in a office , typing endless statements for a minimum page. Where were you on my first year? If I’d watched this video prior to that I would’ve ran out during my orientation day 🙈😂 I guess it’s never too late to pursue our passion whilst doing a shitty boring job that pleases the society aka. Asian parents🤷🏻♀️ Regardless I love your content and wish you luck babe 🙌🏻♥️
I quite like law now. Some people do eventually like it. Yes, I agree that Malaysian lawyers are underpaid, which is why I'm going to practise law overseas. Sorry not sorry. Some people say I don't love my country. I do. It's just that they freaking underpay people! Maybe if they valued people more, talents wouldn't be overseas.
Hi. I'm a Form 5 student and I would like to ask these questions. I saw many people saying that I should be passionate about the law. What do they by that? Secondly, is BM or English used more often?
I don’t think that’s how passion works, buddy. YOU decide what you’re passionate about. Not others. And if you don’t know then you can’t really be disappointed, can you?
Answer to your 1st question: law may seem fun to study but it's tedious work when it comes to practice. At least 10-12 working at an office doing something that isn't your passion will kill your soul if u hated it. Answer to your 2nd question: depends on which field, for criminal, mostly BM. For civil lower court cases, mostly BM because judges prefer using BM. But most of the cause papers are in BM. Important thing to take note: you gotta pass your BM in order to be qualified as lawyer during your pupillage.
I want to do law because I am passionate about it but at the same time I'm passionate about becoming a film producer too.. is there a way we can do both? And what job did you get after your law degree? Do you plan on moving abroad?
Hi Ivor! I just came across this vid of yours, i am currently 16 quarantining no school.. not really studying :( i hve a question, i kinda suck at BM but usually get a C or D do u think that’s an average grade to get ? Because i’ve heard from some teachers that u can atleast pass it right? I am very passionate in studying law (mostly in the UK like youu which is why i came across uu) and the only subject that i suck the most is BM usually the karangan 😀😀
yes u gotta your pass your BM in SPM in order to be a lawyer in Malaysia. Some people I know who failed BM in SPM, still have to sit for BM test to get the sijil kelayakan during Pupillage. HAHAH just work harder and make sure it's good enough to pass! otherwise it would be a hell for you because most legal documents are in Malay
@@IvorXianZ AAAA crap well i guess working hard will show my effort, plUs i want to be a law student so if i go lazy around .. no use lehh btw thanks so much for your advice appreciate your time replying !! ^_^
Do they use english or bahasa in court? Please help. I'm really indecisive now whether I should study law though I'm interested in it. My parents don't support me so hehe.
The only reason I want to study law because I'm only good at memorising stuff... I'm bad at maths.. can you suggest other career that suits me? Thanks in advance
@@IvorXianZ yeah I know it's more than that.. idk.. probably money and pride? I also would like to improve my social communicating skills.. thanks for responding tho
hiya, I’m doing BPTC now. but my question is actually regarding malay - did you find it difficult at first when you started pupilage since i assume some, if not most documents are malay? and in court judges would prefer malay as well? i can speak malay and passed all my exams etc but i don’t think it’s good enough to understand official documents fully 😭 wonder if i should start practicing some malay now
it was so difficult for me given that I haven't been using Malay language ever since I left high school. Well, you gotta do what you gotta do to survive haha. Google translate would be your best friend. Also while drafting documents, I suggest to draft it in the language that you're comfortable in and then only do the translation to Malay, otherwise it'd be time consuming

Hi ivor, im currently a ukt student and im about to enter final into my final year. So im just wondering, does the University i choose to attend matters to my future employers if i hope to work at big firms in KL ? or every UK law school graduate is the same to them?
hmm based on my experience, UKT students are everywhere now. Thanks to HELP uni and BAC. I don't feel like I'm placed better than CLP students in terms of applications. However, some big firms like Azmi & co specifically stated on their website that BPTC students will get paid higher for their pupillage. So if big firm is your thing, then going to good UK uni is a better option because big firms like to see what looks nice on the surface (academic results) sadly..

Hi there, i came across yr video and im really glad that you stated out the facts that i was thinking too. Im currently studying law , sem 1, but recently im kinda lost. Lost as in im not sure whether this is the career i want to pursue in for the restvof my life. Tbh i had passion in physio but as you said, due to asian family standards i was pressured by that at the time i made my choice. But now im kinda regretting it as i want to pursue a career that i have interest in and achieve job satisfactory. Im highly doubtful that working in the legal field would giv me that rather than burning me out. For me, i think work life balance is essential too. I have more interest in physiotherapy now, but im afraid and worried to consult my parents. Could you giv me some suggestions? It would really help if its coming from another that has the same understanding ☺🙏🏻
only first sem of your first year? yo it's not too late to quit though. I know your family might go mad but they would be more mad after finding out 4 years later that u don't want to pursue law at all. Hey don't worry!! try to talk to your parents about how spending another 4 years in law school without passion & work with peanut pay are not gonna be great for u and ur family. If your parents also have the misconception that lawyers gonna earn big buck, do some research of wages of physiotherapists and lawyers and explain the comparisons and most importantly, emphasize that it's your passion. My friend is working as a physiotherapist (fresh grad) earning more than average lawyers who are working in the same State (plus OT pay too !!). Not a lot of people know what their passion is, even on first year! good job!!

Thats why think before u pick ur course... Its understandable typical parents jaman now want their kids to go for dr and lawyer... But u have to explain them about ur passion u have to make them confident that this is u want... U like to do and ur plan to succeed...make them believe u ill not become spoiled brats jobless etc... And the most importand thing u happy with ur choice and and never regret it...
a lot of people that I know still don't know what their passions are, that's why they should explore it after high school and keep options open. Not immediately enrolling to a course forced my parents and eventually hate it. 75% of the People who came out of universities are still lost
Kids.
Money makes me happy.

:) Glad that you are somewhere you want to be !

yessss studying law and working with the law are totally different :( especially the lifestyle of a lawyer wears me out
hi ivor! i'm new student that taking foundation in law. and i admit it that i choose law bcs i have interest in them and my late grandfather wants her grandchildrens to be in legal field but no one has achieved that yet so when i want to submit the upu system, i put law as my first choice because i thought it was a hint for me and at that time honestly, i'm still confused about my ambition so i just go to the flow and took law. now i'm here studying law, im in my week 3 now. frankly, at my first week i had mental breakdown bcs everything don't looks like what i imagined, and when i read law books im so BLANK! i dont understand anything, that time my interest in law slowly decreasing.
I know that not all who take degree in law need to be a lawyer but if we think logically, i think even i take law or business i will
end up to be clerk or something.
haha yes I had the same experience too.
So for my mother's case, the conclusion is the payment isn't really reasonable but it's not because lack of clients but instead the clients themselves don't have enough money 🥴
I forgot to mention but If you're wondering,my mother's company is at Johor Bahru...maybe this will not be a problem if the company is at KL...and one more thing,my mother's company only has SYARIE law service...there's no CIVIL law service....and obviously,if you have both, you can make a lot more money.
@@justinbiebermalaysia1335 omg seriously thank you so much for this information. I'm gonna take law too . Plus .. what happens if you don't have any clients when you're a lawyer? Will you still get money ? Also are you studying for law rn ? Is it hard ? I'm trying to reconsider my decision again ʕಠ_ಠʔ
@@sideeyeking no,you will not get money if you don't have any client..but what can I say is there are so many people out there that need a lawyer service..so,it is hard to find a lawyer that doesn't have any client
I'm not studying law right now..I just got my SPM result last month and my next plan is to further my study in law..right now I'm still waiting for the UPU result
@@justinbiebermalaysia1335 once again thank you so much for responding me and I really hope studying for law is worth it to mee and I wish you all the best for upu results 🥳
Same situation here, I love studying pengajian am n sejarah cus I love reading sm. But it comes with art and duhh... No lukis lukis please
I love animals and would love to help them but it’s not my calling, my passion and I don’t have the guts to tell her
She thinks that just because I said I want to be a veterinarian when I was five I’ve stuck to it
Well I think it really boils down to a misconception that "we can never find our passion" or that "we are not passionate about anything".
Raw and honest opinion on subject matters. Love it.
ahhaha yes thank you
I truly understand how you feel as I am actually feeling the same way currently as well. I feel lost after graduating from law school especially as a Malaysian.
aww Chanelle! how did u overcome that feeling and decide what to do next?
First of all you need to have passion in anything you do.dont blame law if you are type that like to be enjoy always.
Hi Ivor! This video just showed up in my feed! Thanks for sharing your experience, and I'm glad you're pursuing your passions! (Still practicing law in North Carolina here.)
thank you for that! It must have been an awarding passionate journey for you to have practiced in North Carolina for that long! All the besttt
I know where I want to study but not what I want to study.
omg we kind of have the same personalities. honestly i wanna pursue my studies in music too but i was forced to study law but hey i don't like public speaking or whatever that needs speaking ability in public, it gives me an anxiety. thank you for sharing your thoughts btw!
omggg haha hi! try to do music on the side girl
Love,
Julia

I am so nervous for university, cause soon in a few months i will enter uni pursuing degree in law. It totally shocked my friends since i am always more to art, but law is my parent's choice (i don't hate them). My personality are very opposite to lawyer. I hate reading, studying non stop and constant pressure. Wish me luck ;(,,,
P. S: but I've made a deal with my parent to let me apply for police officer after finishing my degree :)
I will finish law degree and give the certificate to my parents and I will do whatever I want to be after that,, an illustrator, photographer, riding a horse every weekend, and a uniform officer!

Where was this video 2 years ago? 😭It's too late for me. I gotta at least soldier through this degree. Happy for you Ivor!
haha push it through and work your passion along the way
I am unemployed and my passion doesnt make me money, and i am 30 what should i do?
balance it by getting a job with moderate working hours so u can work on your passion (in my opinion).

I want pursue law in the states but i don't think so J.D(Juris Doctor) is recognised in Malaysia. Do you have tips or advices?
I AGREE!! 🤣🤣And I also thought I could be a lawyer to fund my future dreams.(yeah, it’s kinda stupid) But my parents do support me for my Dreams and they do know the greatness of media and being a TH-camr. Hey i wanna ask something. i'm really bad at math and i even hate em. So , To become a laywer do we need to get a "fantastic" result in math? Please
Actually not really crucial
I mean, common sense basic math is required when it comes to remedies part in a claim, especially personal injury cases. :D
Recently , I applied the course that relate to 'law' which is criminal justice ? Are they the same thing the way it will become more stressful like you've said before ? Because what I know about criminal justice is to learn the basic things about law but not to becoming lawyer. :)
I did my A levels at the so called "Rajasigham college" but thank god dropped out of Law and started pursuing my passion (Computer science)
and thanks to that fateful choice of not pursuing law and make Rm3500 per month after spending like what Rm 150k ++ on student loans like some of my friends that went through with it now I make $153000++ USD (per year ) ($12k++ usd per month) working remote(WFH) for Google. Should've watched this waayyyyy earlier. Im currently doing foundation in law. Its tough tbh AAAAAAAAAAA
hahah foundation is still early~ u can try doing internships to decide whether u like it or not. But if u dont like studying law then most probably practicing law is gonna be hell for u haha
hi i know im commenting this late but i just got my spm results and am thinking about pursuing law. may i know why it's tough?
@@camela723 hi there! First off, it's tough because there are many things you have to memorise. Definitions, figures, law cases, provisions and acts and the list goes on and on.
Second, the assignments. Law assignments require a lot of research and reading (the facts given have to be correct and so on)
Third, you wouldn't have enough time for yourself.

I quite like law now. Some people do eventually like it. Yes, I agree that Malaysian lawyers are underpaid, which is why I'm going to practise law overseas. Sorry not sorry. Some people say I don't love my country. I do. It's just that they freaking underpay people! Maybe if they valued people more, talents wouldn't be overseas.
yea facts. Where are u planning to practice your law in? where did u study your law?
Ivor Xian Z I studied at the University of York. Looking to practise in the UK.
Hi. I'm a Form 5 student and I would like to ask these questions. I saw many people saying that I should be passionate about the law. What do they by that? Secondly, is BM or English used more often?
hey, I’m also a form 5 student and I want to study law I think u should go for it, I think it’s an interesting profession
Important thing to take note: you gotta pass your BM in order to be qualified as lawyer during your pupillage.
if you've taken the points that I've mentioned in the video as consideration, then by all means, go ahead! good luck!!
yesssss some people still dk what to pursue but my words of advice is to keep trying different things until you feel like it.
If I studied law abroad can I work as a lawyer in any country or only the country that I studied in ?
Actually all so called professional professions do not pay well unless you are the owner. Full stop.
PERIODT. so underrated :(
I want to do law because I am passionate about it but at the same time I'm passionate about becoming a film producer too.. is there a way we can do both?
HAHAH just work harder and make sure it's good enough to pass! otherwise it would be a hell for you because most legal documents are in Malay

i can speak malay and passed all my exams etc but i don’t think it’s good enough to understand official documents fully 😭 wonder if i should start practicing some malay now
it was so difficult for me given that I haven't been using Malay language ever since I left high school. Well, you gotta do what you gotta do to survive haha. hmm based on my experience, UKT students are everywhere now.
@@IvorXianZ may I know what do you mean by BPTC
@@oahmundroid after your 3 years of law degree, you must take the so called law licence either in Malaysia which is CLP or in the UK which is BPTC
@@jackas698 thank you so much, I want to ask you about ATC advance Territory college, is it considered a good law school and which is considered better ATC or HELP
@@oahmundroid ATC is definitely a good choice if you want to finish 3 years of your degree in Malaysia, otherwise you can go to Help or BAC to do the UK transfer program
Hi Ivor, tq for this informative video. Can u kindly adv me what's the career path for a law graduate without CLP? Tq
quit ages back...failed clp and realized it was wasting my time to repeat and watching all my lawyer friends depressed by overworking...
Not a lot of people know what their passion is, even on first year! good job!!
@@IvorXianZ i wanna say Thank You Very Much ! I finally gathered up my courage to talk to my parents. Suprisingly they were supportive (although i think i will receive a few nags in the future tho). But im glad i made my choice and pursue my interest. Thanks for making this video and sending me the message and being supportive😭😭 it meant alot to have someone understanding the problems and situations im facing. Thankyou !! 💓
@@chiaulingscl wow girl!!! thank yourself for taking a huge step! GOOD JOB! I'm soooo happy that I could help! thank you! ALL THE BEST!!
Enjoy yourself
why youtube just recommend me this video after i got accepted to asasi law 😃😃
