Most of any ocean around the world is International waters. It does not belong to anyone. Exclusive Economic Zone only extend to 200 nautical miles from coastal baseline.
Maldives despite being small island chains have EEZ territorial size almost half of that of India. It has significant stake in Indian Ocean. Next comes Sri Lanka at 3rd place.

There could be bad actors in the government who are misaligning or maligning the intention of gifts. This is the example of Maldives. Remember that Srilanka was pro china from 2005 to 2020... They were thinking that with all the projects being done through the BRI China, they would get handouts and bailouts. But the Chinese didn't come. So it is with Pakistan and with all our neighbours. If you take the Chinese on, you have asked for trouble in your country as there is nothing like a free meal. Their investments always come with their face share of burdens on the local governments. So when things get worse, that's when india must step in. May wisdom prevail.

Maldive is misbehaving with India as a whole. The 77 nos of indian nonarmed troops were engaged there as per agreement between two' countries to rescue operations mainly. Staying there or not staying in Maldives is different but driving out with insult cannot be digested.
The agreement says they should train Maldivians as well. Looks like India forgot about that part.

You are missing the bigger picture. Maldives is too small to mess with us. Its China not Maldives which is playing this game. Its aim is to encircle India. Will India allow Chinese military bases in Maldives? Will India allow Maldives to become what Cuba is to USA? Creating a military base in Lakshadweep won't remove the bigger threat.

China OTOH has a recent history of trying to take over as many little islands and ports of countries around the world due to its military expansion. The smart move by India would have been to build a political coalition in Maldives that would have been pro India so an anti-Indian government never was created in the first place. This is a failure of Indian foreign policy, similar to what happened with Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka

If the Maldives premier decided to get in bed with China, then you would have been naïve to have India take it lying down silently. No big country is going to let a little guy play politics in its neighborhood. The US will not, China or Russia will not. Too bad your Maldives premier didn't have the brains to think this through before he pissed India off, a country that has had friendly relations and even blood relations for thousands of years with the Maldives. India respected its sovereignty when it stopped an invasion into Maldives and returned the country to its people. Question is not about Maldives sovereignty it’s about de risking threats as Maldives is bringing in Chinese PLA presence into the region and India needs to prepare for it. Unfortunately the people of Maldives will suffer when the two giants clash. Do you think Maldives will be able to survive if anything goes wrong in the Indian Ocean, its economy is based on tourism which will no doubt be the worst hit.
