@@ChicagoBob123 I was on the reservation page while watching the Model 3 launch video. They promised a hatchback sedan, which in my opinion is the most versatile body style ever produced. I used to have no problem throwing my bike with 28" tires in the back of my Ford Escort. In the video I saw the trunk, which was clearly a last minute retrofit from a hatch design. I did not make a reservation. My boss got one and loved it, except for the trunk. In addition to the small opening, the weird retrofit from a hatch design means snow slides down the back windshield and directly into the trunk whenever you open the trunk. He has since replaced it with a Model Y, which is fine, but I don't want an SUV, I want a car.

Holden pretty much had one the one line. There they made all the similar models Omega, Berlina, Calais, Wagon, Ute, etc, all very similar cars the same platform, same line, but then then GM came up with the smaller/mid range car called Cruze, was made internationally in GM factories around the world, including Adelaide. This was completely different car, completely unrelated to the models being produced, but they super-imposed the Cruze line over the Holden commodor-ish line. I know, I was there. So you can do a list of similar cars, and also completely different cars on the same line is also possible. Yep, its messy, but it does work and is possible. I guess my point is, its difficult to say from their statement, whether its a smaller model 2, or a cheaper model 3. A model 2 would mean a new car, which is more wallstreet friendly. A cheaper model 3 may imply to wallstreet that they are commodetising the model 3, which they don't like. If its a 5% discount on the current model 3, wallstreet won't like that either. Wallstreet and retail investors are hungry for a new model. possibly a model 2 hatchback. If they can pop out ultra cheap 2 seater robo taxi cars, thats good also, but FSD has to be fully solved, at least in minimum in one location for this one to work.

Once the implement the full out of the box gen 2 manufacturing the price can drop and margins increase. A model 2 2 seater can easily be the 25k car. Reduce the weight which reduces the size of the battery which in turn further reduces the weight. You can use a cheaper motor and cheaper breaks. You can probably get away with a battery 60% the size of a model 3. You just won't be able to have Ludacris mode.

This doesn’t bother me… take a model 3 rwd and strip it down to base options… manual seats, manual windows, no touchscreen or smaller way more limited interface(I’d prefer manual controls but touchscreen is probably lighter) cut the battery in half(that’s 500lbs alone), smaller wheels(the reduced weight would allow smaller brakes).
You could potentially drop weight by at least 600lbs or more… I’d expect a substantially better reduction of price than just 5% though. This could be done I feel

I disagree. Tesla is segmenting the market. They could have made the model 3 a cheaper version of the model S, but that just degrades the value associated with the model S. A cheaper version of the 3 means putting pressure on the margins of the existing model 3 line up.
It is better to have a model 2 that would have a $25k USD entry point, then a LR for maybe $32k and a performance for maybe $38k.
    Different market segment, different buyers.
My tip is that it will be a small hatch. The $25k will be 2 door. The others will be 4 door.

Tesla lost the plot with the M3P in the U.K., banging up its price by £5k in the last moments before release, it’s even cheaper in Ireland (RHD, same import duties, higher VAT). I was going to get one at £55k but I refuse to be ripped off, hence I’ve switched brands. Tesla seems to not understand what utility vehicles are. Taxis, pickup trucks, 18 wheelers and vans are all utility vehicles. With all of them form follows function. People don't buy pickups with useless beds, they don't rent cars they don't fit in and with a Semi they don't buy a day cab that's as long as a sleeper cab....I'm sure they'll find buyers for all of them, but not as many as if they had from the start designed these vehicles with the people who would be using them in mind.

However, I think the October announcement will be a game changer in the whole world if consumers believe it is better to rent a robotaxi instead of owning an EV. So what motivation or point is there for Tesla to build less expensive cars. Obviously this is not about who can build the cars for less but who has the most government backing.
The new less expensive cars to be built on the existing unused line capacity will need to be significantly different than the 3Y or they will cannibalise exist sales for 3Y. Maybe 2 door hatchbacks or small vans.

This will also shorten the wheelbase. I think it will be a two seater, and share some of the body panels with the current production…. Basically a model 3/Y with the center section cut down. The smaller battery pack combined with using pre-existing parts and production lines should drive the cost down drastically.

I believe they will Do it by offering 3 (or More) Software packeges, range extension, faster exeloration and faster charging or enabling homecharging each for ~ 3000 Dollar , something like this, so you will get the m3sr like today for ~ 35000. Currently they try everything to lower production Cost to make as much Profit on a 25000 m3 car as possible since stuff like 48 volt are Currently not available for those cars Till end of 2025. But this way the 25k Tesla won't eat the m3 sales and curret owners wont hate the Brand for losses. Also Service revenue will go up as the Software packeges will be unlocked Cover time and the resell value stays good for Tesla.

Countries are starting to remove EV credits and subsidies. Tesla needs to reduce the price by 10-15% rapidly IMO. Growth will take a hit. I doubt Tesla can make a small Model 2 that could compete with cheaper Chinese cars. Besides, there’s mo demand for a small car in America.

A cheaper 20k EV will have a 40KW Battery, anything above 40KW would make costs go up

I disagree - I believe Tesla will release 2 versions of the model 2 Redwood - a hatchback/ shooting brake, and a coupe/ sedan. And the next one (third version) will be a suv based on the Redwood.
In my mind, Tesla's new strategic model for mass production, is the Redwood. The business class (model 3 & y) will face massive competition from the Chinese and Chinese/ European cooperations (Geely and others)
But in the cheaper market 15 - 25k $ - Tesla needs to make their move now. That market will explode during the next 5 years, and will by far be the largest. Therefore Tesla needs to prioritize this.
The cheaper models needs to have smaller wheels, lightweight chassis, but still great comfort - and a range at minimum 300 miles. It must be cheap to own and maintain, without compromising the quality.

If Tesla doesn't release a smaller car for Europe and Asia, it will be blown away by a flurry of smaller cars around the 25 000 mark and under. The model Y is an old car that needs to be significantly updated, but you can't just keep updating a very small range of cars.

A lot of people don't want small cars. TESLA is going to make good cars that are as affordable as small gas cars and they will all have the ability to become income earning assets. How do you compete with that?

I expect $35k after incentives i.e. $32.5K before the $7.5K tax credit. Can’t see why Tesla would go cheaper than than they - they don’t want to be in a race to the bottom as there won’t be the profit to make it worthwhile.

I think Tesla will be successful with a "greener" version, sodium battery, iron motor, all-season tires.
Sodium battery because range is not a real problem for commuters, in fact the distance from home to workplace and back is enough, so daily charging at home covers the need, I think 32kW is plenty.
Having said that, I would very much like to see a station wagon, the last Swedish volvo V70 (2015) are favorites for last ICE owners.
In fact, the energy consumption does not matter much, although the Hyundai ioniq 6 and Mercedes-Benz EQS can do something, it is the practicality that prevails.
OK to van/camper, and short two seat, two door that will also find a market.
