  • After digging around the web a bit and NOT finding any good plans to make a wool swing picker, I just decided to make one myself. In this video I use a few boards, some nails, and a bit of copper pipe to create my own swinging wood fleece picker. This video goes though my process of designing and building this unit. Future video will include it's use and maybe some tweeking of the design.

    Thank you so much for this picker series! You’ve been a great help to my budding wool business. You’ve not only helped me save money but helped me feel empowered and confident that I can do, build, or be anything I need for my business.

      Fantastic, I agree, there really isn’t anything you can’t do, take your time and study.

    Thank you so much for sharing this!! Being a fiber artist, a swing picker has been on my wish list for several years for processing sheep and alpaca fleeces. With your clear instructions, I'm sure I can make one like this!

      Yes, they seem pretty high end but they are actually fairly simple machines. That being said I haven’t made a 2nd one yet.

    I too have been looking at how the more popular swing carders have set the nails. It appears the nails are not bent but the board is drilled at the needed angles to insert the nails, eliminating any need to bend the nails. Now to figure how to accomplish this is my quest.

      That’s mostly why I bent them as otherwise I’d have to configure my drill press at an angle. The nail heads wouldn’t sit flush, but there would be no need to glue them in unless the action of the swing pushes them back over time.

      @@RedBarnHomestead I believe on some drill presses you can tilt the table.

    Excellent! But can I ask what kind of length nails did you use?

    Quickie question...how much overlap or protrusion is there between the bottom and the top nails? Meaning when its swinging how far do the nails overlap? I would think 1.5" is too much, but 1/2"?

    • @RedBarnHomestead
      @RedBarnHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว

      They actually overlap about 1-3/4". That would be an adjustment to tinker with, but the point is to rip the fibers apart and get them all in one direction, the fibers coming out of this machine have been great.

      @@RedBarnHomestead thanks! I have seen one picker with adjustable height so may go that route just to experiment and see what the difference makes.

    5 months out from the video, how is the picker faring? Still working the way you want? Anything you would do differently?

    • @RedBarnHomestead
      @RedBarnHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At this point, no, it’s still working great. What I really want to do is build another one to sell but finding the time is hard.

      LOL...I did buy the materials to make a 2nd one, I just haven't gotten around to it. They sell for a pretty penny here in Alberta.
