- A motorway cop on a BMW bike has just directed us where to get a new light bulb, but as we leave, we hit a checkpoint. Then, I recognize it is the same copper as the one who gave us directions the day before. The subject quickly changes to soccer and Algeria after the first checks are done.
Boy, these chaps are proud of their country.

What surprised me in this stop, is they seemed a bit confused about why we were even there...., when we arrived and when we would leave, etc.
I thought our French was acceptable.
To answer other commetns: We did not pay bribes anywhere (but we did have a little issue getting into the country thinking we could pay electronically and having a little discussion on the sequence of declaring your cash, ....and getting local insurance, and had to get creative...). Our BIGGEST issue in Algeria was that the cash machines would not work on any of our cards, except for Central Bank and airports....that was tricky.
+mooiweer i live in souk ahras algeria not far from that checkpoint ..am glad you visited my town and you r most welcome....but am confused why Police officers act so stupid? that's funny lol ......about the cards issue i don't know what card u r using but i think you need to transfer what you need to a bank who has already proved in algeria...Good Luck on Your Next Adventure

You are right, unfortunately! We are the lucky ones to be able to travel. But patience, with the modern communications, no country can leave their citizens in the dark for much longer!
