    I have been through a popular (at least on TH-cam and in Google sponsored ads) immigration firm and an immigration lawyer. BOTH were terrible. So don't think all your problems are solved by just hiring someone to deal with all the paperwork. You could wind up without your visa, have to leave the country or worse have to wait 6 months to reapply after your lawyer/immigration firm messed up. If they do not communicate with you frequently, quickly (i.e. they act like a typical Colombian business), move on quickly to someone else. And even if you use someone, DO YOUR RESEARCH, double check their work. Colombia is not a country for doing efficient, high quality business like in the USA. Some people are like that but MANY are way too carefree about your time and your money. So do your homework.

    Sorry for this rant Wes.... but I use every opportunity to make this well Known to every would be applicant for the "M- visa " including when you're married to a Colombian. All over the migration Colombia website you will read three ( yes 3 years ) is the duration of an M-visa ... However that is simply NOT the case. There is a 99% chance you will be granted one year when you receive your M-visa. Hidden in the small print like within all bureaucracies of all governments, it does state one to three years, end it is strictly at the discretion of the reviewing migration officer. However getting a two-year like you mentioned , hmmm , consider yourself lucky because normally it's only one year. And then when you use said M-visa to apply for your CÉDULA" , the cédula expiry date will always correspond with the expiry date of the visa you used for the process.... For me it wasn't worth the money. And to boot, even if you reapply before the visa or cédula expire you have to start from zero again the entire process photos ,forms ,applications etc...desde cero , todo de nuevo!! And that is straight from the immigration office in Bélen ..if I had know it was only for one year I would not have pursued this process. oh well, lesson learned... Suerte !! ;)

  • @jeminigemi
    @jeminigemi ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yes. This is the type of content that will get you places. Build up that migration network and help others get connected.
    Additionally, she is 100% correct. Don't be cheap. Pay a professional. You will NOT be able to get this done on your own. You only want to do this once, and spending a grand or two is cheap if that gets you on the path to permanent residency. Big picture, that is a very small price to be allowed to live in a country long term. Borderline peanuts.
    I spent about 1500 getting my Visa to Ecuador. That's nothing. One months rent in America? It saves me tons of stress, all my paperwork was double-checked before submission, and now I am on the path for permanent residency. It's a friggin bargain when you think about the freedom that is buying you.

    • @juanvaldez7633
      @juanvaldez7633 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Speaking directly to the (M) Migrant visa pensionado, prior to last year's passage of Resolution 5477 is was not absolutely necessary to hire a visa lawyer to apply and get approved - I was able to do it completely on my own and receive approval for three years on the first attempt. However, the passage of that Resolution with all the new requirements entailed has made the process significantly more complex, and I would in fact advise hiring a visa lawyer (as I just did for my 2nd visa) to guide you through it. Also expect the whole process it to be much more expensive than before, especially if applying for a 2nd visa while living in Colombia - my expenses when all was said and done came to $1800 U.S. for everything.

    • @jeminigemi
      @jeminigemi ปีที่แล้ว

      Good details. I only recommend hiring a lawyer since most people will get botched up with the government beurocracy or mishandle the forms in some fashion (like mistiming background checks for instance). Not impossible to do yourself if you are truly savvy, but most people will struggle.
