Great topic - being an introvert and shy type this is the area of photography I found more challenging than any of the technical, art and science of camera and lighting setups. Connecting with the actor/model/subject is super important and something I constantly strive to improve and learn at every opportunity. Ive been doing this just about 2 years now and have come along in leaps and bounds and always room for improving this side!
One thing that used to dent my confidence a ittle was that despite my producing great shots that subjects clearly liked and gave great feedback, its rare that a model or actor would book again a new shoot at my home studio setup. It took me a while to realise that regardless I can provide decent looking images that can compare and compete with any "pro" studio, many actors and models want to work with different photographers for different looks, free shoots, and "proper" studio environments, full on professional sets and facilities with the whole hair and makeup approach. Additionally I discovered that most actors in London are steered by their agents to specific long used photography "pro studios" for their headshots as an expectation/requirement.
Once I realised all this I was able to focus my simple marketing that leans a little more towards models and actors just starting out on their journey and needing help with ideas and concepts where I can give the time needed to listen, support and provide what will work for them. Im still figuring out stuff around this and all your wisdom, insights, philosophy and advice is helping me build out a better offering, thanks so much.

This is the best advice for doing portraits that is out there. You are among a small group of photographers that thinks this way and it absolutely fits for my abilities. I've tried the planned pose thing, and the different attempts at expressions, but they always fail, and I feel out of my own comfort zone. More recently, I've been shooting in the way that you describe, and it takes the stress off of me and by proxy, off of the subject. Things go quicker and more organic which feeds into new concepts along the way that aren't in the posing cards. With my experience being in landscape and decay photography, it is much easier for me to shoot what I like in front of the camera rather than create what I think I might like. I just converse and guide and grab the moment which is how I have functioned for years. Great video as always.

I think maybe 20% of my shoots are camera or lighting related. The other 80% is all interaction.. usually getting people relaxed and comfortable. Someone once said that people have a face when they talk to others. When they get in front of a camera, they almost always put on another face.. either out of nervousness because they don't know what to do.. or because they "think" they know what they're supposed to do in front of a camera. My first job is always to get their real face back. It's often just getting their mind off the camera.

Excellent reminders, thank you. Interesting thought you provided: Interact... then bring out the camera. It reminded me of my childhood days at family portrait day - the first thing I did when entering a studio was look to see what and where the camera was. It never occurred to me until today that maybe uneasy portrait clients do the same with my camera. Once again, you have awakened me.

I remember someone talking about sitting for a portrait with David Bailey - the gist of the story was that they talked for an hour before Bailey even touched a camera.

Thank you for the sage advice sir. I wish more photographers on TH-cam spoke about such topics. Would love to see more videos on directing and interacting with sitters and/or models for portraits.

I found this a bit tough according to my social skills. Being yourself and natural helps a lot. You are who you are and things will go wonderful if everything flows naturally.

Great stuff Daniel. I've only done the quick shots. They need ones done, but inconvenient for them. But this still applies to a get quick connection, and be damn ready with the camera. I've found the best most natural shots have been the very first couple before they start thinking about "I'm in front of a camera"

Thanks Daniel, there is a lot of money at stake so supprise to me of mal practise. For me an influencer as you allows me to have an idea what is around on the market without having to buy or to rent the gear and still have a good idea which equipment is most appropiated for a particular job.

Great topic Daniel Norton! There is no way around it you have to talk and interact with the subject, and as you mentioned it takes time to learn to read people but once you do it sure get easier. Have a great weekend Sir!

Daniel, sincerely appreciate your direct candour. What if you are an introvert? How do you deal with models? Not the 1,000 an hour type but the Model Mayhem model?

Would be interesting to hear more about much of this does or doesn't apply to shooting models or actors - when I guess sometimes the expectation will be that you're making a portrait to show a character or mood they can portray, rather than who they really are. I guess it might be quite culturally specific to location, industry etc.
I've only done one shoot with a model so far (just 1/2 hour outdoor natural light TFP couple shot with a model and her boyfriend), but I'm interested in doing more, and not sure how often trying to find out more about what sort of a person they are will be well received or how often it might be seen as time wasting or intrusive.

For better or for worse with the way people wish to accessorize themselves they are a walking and talking billboard about themselves? If possible greet and meet them outside of the work area?
