I feel that people have lost an appreciation for the true arcade style of racing games from the 90s era. People have come to expect realism and predictability from racing games, and they criticize it for having "poor" controls otherwise. Racing games like any game each have a learning curve, and it can be rewarding to master a game's unique driving system. Test Drive 6 compared to GT 2 is apples to oranges. It's not meant to be the same, but unfortunately most games since GT are judged by sim standards.

The thing is, TD6 feels like F-Zero GX with Underground 1's traffic. It's quite infuriating to play with your car sliding and tumbling around.
SCUD Race/Super GT also has twitchy controls, but it's much more controllable and predictable.
It's not just hate for arcade racers, TD6's handling is just too unpredictable to be fun.

The problem of Test Drive 6 doesn't are the missing realism, its the broken sense of speed, bad physics, crappy graphics for a 1999 and poorly modeled vehicles. Also, Test Drive 5 have better content and physics compared to TD6.

This issue is not unique to racing games, people seem to expect realism from everything, even from minecraft back in the day "oh the hunger system makes the game more realistic = better" granted those were probably kids that have grown up since then but still, many people still think like that nowadays.

I seriously hate racing sims. I have some racing sims like Gran Turismo 2-5, Forza Motorsport 1 & 4 but I love arcade racing games like crazy. I would love to have a remake of Test Drive (2002). I loved the characters, music and style of the game. I would easily take that over ANOTHER boring racing sim.

Personally, I'd say TD6 is a guilty pleasure of mine. Ridiculous physics and hideous car models are the perfect recipe for an average racer.

I forgot to mention in the other comment. People complaining about the twitchy handling of TD6 need to learn to tap the direction instead of holding it. This is something that's not exclusive to this series as even F-Zero requires tapping/flicking to do minimal turning or even in simcades like Forza Horizon if you're tuning your car with a heavy front downforce bias against a low rear downforce (basically trying to pull off twitchy rally handling setups).
Also, Midnight Club games and their predecessor, Midtown Madness games were twitchy arcade racers where you'd avoid excessive turning by either tapping the directional button or flicking the analog stick instead of holding it in place.
And honestly the best way I manage to defend the game and the physics, is when I mention how the entire game clicks with the soundtrack. I will actually start a bar fight with someone who doesn't think the game is enjoyable after doing a quick run of Rome in a Viper or Barracuda to the sound of the overprocessed breakbeats in Leave You Far Behind, especially considering the mood setting of the Rome loading screen where the song already begins with the overdriven bass and the acid synth.
The game's races legit feel like were build around the songs cause at a normal racing pace it seems the course layout goes from high speed to technical at just the right parts of the songs and you never seem to be able to have a different song play in the same race; if you play Hong Kong forward, you will *always* get Qburns's He's a Skull, in the raceway, it's always Cars, Rome forward? Leave You Far Behind
EDIT: And I KEEP forgetting stuff. You didn't mention the Dreamcast version is the superior console version due to having all of the PC's advantages, including locked 60FPS. That's a good option for those not wanting to bother installing the PC version if they prefer running the game through Flycast
