If u place a suction pump around barometer , height of the Mercury falls because the suction decreases the number of air molecules around so there by decreasing their weight over the Mercury surface in through which is the atmospheric pressure. This is what happens at altitudes. At higher altitudes , there are less number of molecules in a given volume i.e, less denser air.

sonika sandhu it would be 760 cm at sea level. At sea level the atmospheric pressure is about 10 raised to 5 pascals and that is when mercury column would be 760 cm.
If u place a suction pump around barometer , height of the Mercury falls because the suction decreases the number of air molecules around so there by decreasing their weight over the Mercury surface in through which is the atmospheric pressure. This is what happens at altitudes. At higher altitudes , there are less number of molecules in a given volume i.e, less denser air.
There is a correction in your question it is not 760cm it is 76 cm
