Mike Chapman was an incredibly successful songwriter with Nicky Chinn and Holly Knight as co-writing partners. Often Chapman will dismiss Chinn as just a business partner but Chinn was a key part of the early success, establishing the Mickie Most connection, getting Phil Wainman to produce the early Sweet records, Chinn & Wainman still have two active companies together, New Dawn Productions Limited (Incorporated in 1970) and Chinebridge Limited (Incorporated in 1973). From my understanding, Chinn with Wainman financed the early Sweet studio time. Chinn gave his input into songs and helped bring out the best in Chapman. Chinn also provided his luxury Mayfair Flat as the songwriting hub and demo home studio using a revox tape recorder and various musical instruments to hone the songs and get them right before taking the band into the studio. Unfortunately the atmosphere changed, especially around the time that Holly Knight came into the picture and when Chinn put his name on the credits of a Chapman/Knight song, so it became a Chapman/Knight/Chinn song and that caused a lot of fierce resentment. But Chinn had an arrangement that whatever was written by Chapman would be a Chapman/Chinn song, much like Pete Waterman with Mike Stock and Matt Aitken in the 80s. That aside, Chapman proved to be a hit commercial sognwriting genius, especially in Britain 1970 - 1975.
@@MsPineapple01 Really? That's very disappointing and, unfortunately, typical of current day Aussie networks. Chapman is a musical genius and his story has never been told on film. Is it possible that this doco ever see the light of day in any way online? Cheers for uploading this portion of the doco.
this documentation makes it seem like he wrote songs like "heart of glass" or "my sharona", which he produced, but did not write himself. on the other hand his kick-ass producer skills aren't even mentioned once. great guy, sad little film.
In their early days Mike gave The Sweet (later Sweet) a lot of forgettable fluffy pop hits but perhaps inspired by the band's heavy B sides and album cuts around 1974 he wrote an amazing sequence of hard rock/bubblegum-metal hits for them, Teenage Rampage, Ballroom Blitz, Blockbuster, Hellraiser. The opening riff to Hellraiser is all time guitar classic, and also from that era maybe the best song he wrote for Sweet but it wasn't a big hit, The Six Teens
He is genious😊
Thank you Mike for ALL your wonderful hits. They helped shape my childhood and continue to bring me much pleasure. Fellow Aussie here btw!

The full length Doco doesn't. I just needed to cram a heap in the promo top get your attention.
in the 1970/80s the producers often didn't get credit for their contribution to the songs which nowadays would be a songwriting credit.
