  • After presenting THE APOLOGY, Rex and Daniel discuss the basics of gin while tweaking blends for Crowded Barrel's tasting room. Afterwards, experiment with a brave new proprietary blend. It's... yah.

My sister got me a gin infusion kit for Christmas in 2021 and I am still having fun with it mid-late 2022, I found out early on to start with a good base spirit (vodka) a go easy on the botanicals and herbs, and that putting them in a mortar and pestle cuts the steep time for infusion in half. Fun to mess with and a reasonably cheap hobby you catch a buzz from. What's not to like?? Words of wisdom: RESPECT THE LEMON AND ORANGE PEELS! A little goes a loooooong ways!!! Great video guys, I laughed a lot and really enjoy what you do.

  • @Zelmel
    @Zelmel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

An interesting thing with some gin, particularly craft/small batch gins, is "louche." That's where the essential oils that get distilled into the gin from the botanicals are present in enough volume (heavy flavor gins typically) that if you chill it, like having a martini or gin and tonic or even just gin on the rocks, it pulls the oils out of suspension and makes the drink cloudy. Doesn't really affect the flavor or anything a ton, but it can be slightly off-putting to some people.

Last weekend, my wife and I went to a wine blending event at a local winery we're members at.
We had 3 different pinot noir clones, aged in different kinds of barrels (first fill, used, etc), and worked in teams to make our recipe. The winemaker then made enough of our blends for everyone to blind taste, and we voted on the winning blend.
My wife was worried that I was going to be a know-it-all, since I watch you guys and talk about blending whiskey all the time lol. I did convince our team to go with the three tier method (base, then smaller amount, then accent amount), and we got second place. The winning blend was basically an invert of our blend. Overall... I'm 100% addicted to blending now!

For the record, I can speak volumes on coriander, due to a homebrewing mishap. It gives off aromas of orange peel and will typically give off that flavor, as well. If left in a beer or spirit overly long, it will create a strong pickle flavor. Don't ask me how I know. (I struggled through 5 gallons of beer that I refused to make anyone else suffer through.)

When I was young my bartender told me "there is only one time to ever order gin, and that is if you are so inebriated that you cant pronounce more than one syllable words AND you forgot rum was a thing"

Yes! Gin! one of my faves! It's fun to see people's reaction to scotch or gin when they have been drinking vodka sodas their whole lives.

Gasoline tastes better and numbs your mouth smoother than gin! Gins closest taste is bile and thats with every bottle

They should've gotten a bottle of Ableforth's Bathtub Gin as a reference for what a 'cold-compounded' gin tastes like. Also, just focusing on mixing is wrong; a gin that can't stand by itself often can't stand in a drink either. They could even barrel-age for additional complexity.

Being a pastry guy I would always do things by weight. Do it grams/liter
For straining you can pass it through a coffee filter

Any chance MGP would have those bottles available to the public? I would love to do some home blending!

I’ve always been kind of a gin fan. Give me a G&T heavy on juniper and those crisp evergreen flavors in the fall. Give me a citrusy botanical G&T in the summer though. They cut through the heat like a warm knife through butter. That or a Mint Julep.

It would be so incredible if you guys can make an absinth! Absinth is made like a gin but with other botanicals so it shouldn't be to complicated to make. Absinth flies a little bit under the radar, so a lot of distelleries don't think of it as a subsitute to overcome a whisky shortage. To be honest Gin sells a lot quicker and in greater volums, so financially Gin makes more sense but Absinth is such a unique Spirit and if you allready make gin than it shouldn't be a big problem to make a few batches of absinth (at least i hope so).
In addition you guys would help us, the absinth community, a lot. We need a lighthouse to present absinth to a greater audience.

Isn't absinthe traditionally made with brandy as the base spirit, while gin is based on grain spirit? I don't know how strict people are in that regard but it might be reason not to make absinthe.

Quintinohthree the base of absinth is such a high proof spirit that it’s called neutral spirit, originally they used grapes to make it but nowadays grain spirit is more commonly used. Really expensive absinths use grape neutral spirit as their base spirit but thats more for marketing, since the spirit is nearly 100% alcohol it makes literally no differences in taste. But yeah you’re right, original they used something like brandy (probably more something like a grappa and not a brandy)
