Literally LOL at your reaction to Beast! Judith Ivory is an amazing writer with a rich, gorgeous prose style that I appreciate, but that's not the best of her books, alas. The premise is insane and so is the execution. 😂 I'd recommend starting out with The Proposition - it's my favorite of her books and I think you'd enjoy it. (Basically a gender-switched retelling of Pygmalion/My Fair Lady with one of the most loveable heroes in any romance novel I've read.) It's probably the lightest of her books. Some of her others are more intense, like The Indiscretion and Black Silk, both of which I enjoyed. I also like the two books she wrote under the name Judy Cuevas - Bliss and Dance - though they're really hard to track down. Keep an eye out for them when you're at used book sales and you might find a treasure! They sell for insane amounts on eBay. I love Georgette Heyer! So many of the tropes of Regency romance come straight from her. She did extensive research on the period and it shows in how historically accurate the language, atmosphere, and attitudes are. I love how immersive they are in that way. They're not lovey-dovey romances, they're much more on the dry and witty side. Lots of people compare her to Jane Austen. My favorites of hers (so far) are Frederica, Arabella, Venetia, and The Grand Sophy.

I have read The Indiscretion, The Proposition, Sleeping Beauty, and Untie My Heart. All well worth reading. Sleeping Beauty is unique in that the heroine is a high class lady of the evening and is older than the hero. I also have the two books she wrote under the name Judy Cuevas (which might be her actual name). Dance and Bliss definitely have more interesting, somewhat damaged characters than typical historical romances. Cuevas/Ivory hasn't published in quite a while. She was suffering from health issues. It would be great to have something from her again. As for Georgette Heyer, she's considered the queen of the "modern" regency romance. A couple of years ago, a lady was giving away many of her books and I received a great deal of them. To be honest, I've only read These Old Shades which was published in 1926. I read it many years ago and wasn't feeling it, but then read it again two years ago and appreciated it so much more. They really are much more true to the period and are definitely not wallpaper historicals in the least. As the other commenter says, these use the language of the time and are very witty.

Jude Devereux is also a good one- Knight in Shining Armor is also part of the Montgomery/Taggert series and is the first Jude Deveraux book I read (back when it was originally published- I'm dating myself, so must stop). Devils Cub is number 3. When I was a teen I reread devils cub so many times I lost count. The infamous army is the final one I believe and while it is fun, it's during the time georgette was trying to write about historical events it is really more about the battle of waterloo. There are large sections of info dumping about the battle preparations. The first three are easily worth your time. Many romance novelists credit her for getting them into the genre and inspiring them. Another of my favorites is Frederica. My sisters favorite is Arabella. I look forward to your telling us what you think!

That novel was originally published in 1921 and Ms. Heyer wrote it when she was only 17 years old. Per Google, Georgette Heyer published 56 books over her 53 year career. She passed away in 1974. I'm intrigued to read "The Black Moth" now, and I would love to know what you think, whenever you get a chance to read it🙂📖.
