    As several have commented, you do not lock the wheels of the Hoyer when lifting. The lift may need to move a little to position the load over the center of gravity. Locking the wheels can cause the person to swing, sometimes abruptly,, towards the center of gravity, as they clear the bed.

    My Hoyer lift manual says that you must have the brakes OFF when lifting and lowering, so the hoyer lift can find its' centre of gravity, and improve safety.

    I was lifted in a larger hoist in hospital. Although it’s a great idea, there is no provision in the slings to protect the inner thigh skin from the very harsh binding. Had to use a towel to protect my bare legs. Looks so gentle with jeans on, but don’t be fooled.

    Great instructional video! Of course you cannot demonstrate every individual case on a video however this is a great introductory to using a Hoyer lift. The instructions were very plain and clear. I like the way you double checked everything and informed the client of what you were doing as you were doing it. Very useful video! Ok, what about if you have to use a hoyer at home for an ALS patient that can not lift any part of their body?

      Michal Khan You're not supposed to. Any CNA Manual or Course or Book will instruct you that it's a two-person job. Even the lift Manuals themselves says it's a two-person job. If a patient gets injured while you're lifting on your own, your CNA certificate will be in jeopardy.

    not allowed to put brakes on under bed .. lost a job b.cause I challenged the OT. who demanded everytime we did not put brake on . and a heavy patient can move the hoist running over toes .. the care trainer backed up the ot .. we as crers must stop hypocracy..

    Just so everyone is clear, this type of demonstration would and does not work for someone like me who is quadriplegic and who has no neck control. None of my caregivers know how to use a hoyer for someone like me because all the examples online are of people with neck control.

    I agree the legs should remain OPEN once the transfer begins and the patient is in the lift to prevent tipping and to stabilize the base! You have got to account for the floor type that you are rolling on too! A wider base leads to a safer transfer.Not every patient is as small as..as calm as..as cooperative as the model in this video!! Really show more respect for the aides and techs who perform these tasks daily! Ain't so easy is it ?

  • @nitefox1343
    @nitefox1343 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Hey, where I work I have to argue that those legs should be OPEN to prevent swinging and the lift tipping over... If the person is 400 pounds, 5 feet tall, missing a leg and confused...then use the rectangular sling, not the criss cross leg sling. If PT comes in and gets them up without a sling...good luck. A good PT should show you how to choose slings and transfer safer vs unsafe

    you didn't push and secure the knees, to be sure the sitting position is not slouching.

  • @68stanger76
    @68stanger76 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Here's a question someone may answer. I have had patients who are very tall & difficult to transfer ( dementia). When we transfer from the front one person pushes on the knees while another pulls to position in the chair. What happens is the lift sometimes "jams" under chair. We have now gone sideways with the lift which requires little guiding and no pulling. One worker disagrees with this. We say if the legs of the lift are opened slightly and not hitting wheelchair, it is a non issue. Thoughts?

    • @KimberlyM48
      @KimberlyM48 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've had that happen before and went in sideways. That is definitely allowed, and even PT/OT has done it... So your coworker doesn't need to be worried that it's wrong because it's not

    Is there any emergency let down from hanging in the sling, if the hoyer suddenly stopped working and the patient is in air.

  • @lkeller99
    @lkeller99 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree with the poster below. The "model resident" is clearly able to move herself without assistance. My mother is dead weight, over 215 lbs, and even rolling her to one side sometimes takes two people because she is unable to hold herself up using the bedrails. With just me helping her, I am not sure I can use the lift alone. Would like to see a more realistic video.

    • @leanne2698
      @leanne2698 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, more often than not the resident does not roll over that easy and they're usually very heavy! I would sometimes break a sweat just from rolling residents!

    • @ifoster165
      @ifoster165 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes....some lower all the way down to the floor, with help, you would do the same as if they were in the bed, and then lift safely then into the bed

    • @211nova211

      Some facilities require that you only use a mechanical lift to get a paitent off the floor after the nurse has accessed the paitent and says it's ok to move the patient

    That bedrail is dangerous because it won't allow the lift to open the legs on the turn...the solution costs MONEY, something nursing homes for profit do not have because they are paying shareholders. Reality of this video? Two man dead lift because the person is small... That doesn't mean it is safe, but it is a time saver and it is all about the money, plus families prefer you break your back, not that they are the one able to provide the care, they just want you to do it that way. Stay safe and protect your back.

    Honestly if I had this patient I wouldn’t use the hoyer...I would find the sliding board and have them slide into that chair with it positioned by the bed... a hoyer wasn’t required for this patient bc they’re mobile and can assist with care... or like most CNA/LPN/RN’s do just transfer then yourself that paient wasn’t one I would use the hoyer with...but good demonstration next time use a grown man that’s 250lbs and 6’0ft tall and oh did I forget to mention he’s fighting and only one CNA not two... real life type demonstration... 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
