'Sunbaenim' or 'sunbae' means 'senior'. Age and position in Korean culture is VERY important. Senior in this context means BTS literally debuted before any of these groups, so they are their seniors. All the groups that debuted AFTER BTS call BTS sunbaenim. To eloborate: Koreans also call someone in a higher position at work a 'sunbae'. Or at school when someone is at a year higher than yours they get called 'sunbae' too. It's a respectful way to adress someone that is basically doing their job for longer than you. For instance BTS refers to all the idol groups that debuted before them, so before june 2013, sunbae's as well. Respect is important to Koreans and that reflects a lot in their language too.
And about the competition thing: actually there is competition in Kpop too. It's actually remarkable BTS is this nice to everyone. Cuz the way they are toeards people isn't always the norm. That is what makes BTS attitude that much more special! A lot of these rookie idol groups have looked up to BTS since their trainee days amd seeing how BTS was so kind to them is amazing. A lot of the more "popular" idols can be rude to rookies actually. They will be dismissive and or say they have no time etc. They will be arrogant cuz these rookies arent "famous enough" yet. It really is a testament to BTS character they are this nice😭

  • @GotCommonSence

    It literally means “senior”.
Korean society is hierarchical. Relationships among people are strongly influenced by their standing in this hierarchy.
When someone is older than yourself, maybe attended the same school or is from the same area as yourself or somehow related to you, you call them “senior" or "Sunbae".
“nim" is a suffix added to almost any name or title as an expression of respect. In some sense you can equate it to “Sir” or “Mr.”/”Mrs.” etc. So you would get "Sunbaenim".
    Sunbae + Nim = Sunbaenim
Alternatively, when someone is younger than you, they are your “Hubea" which stands for “Junior”. As a senior, you’re not required to express any extra respect to your junior, so you don’t add the “nim” at the end.

Sunbaenim is like someone you call your senior in whatever industry youre in

  • @koyukiny

'Sunbaenim' is a very polite& respectful way of calling someone who is a senior in the same field or industry. For example, if you are a freshman at college, you call someone who is sophomore 'xx sunbaenim'. If you are a member of Kpop idol group who debuted in 2018, you call any one who debuted earlier than you 'xx sunbaenim'. 'Sunbae' means someone who started the career or study in the same field earlier than you, which has a nuance of respect. 'Nim' is a very respectful way of calling someone. So 'Sunbae-nim' is a very respectful way of calling someone who is a senior in the field or industry. All the Kpop idols who debuted later than BTS call them sunbaenim. BTS also call other idols who debuted earlier than them sunbaenim.

Sunbaenim: What does 'sunbaenim' mean?”. It is a Korean term used to address someone who is older than you in the work force or in an education system. This does not mean a good 10 years older than you, but someone who is maybe 2-7 years older than you.

Korea is on a really huge respect level. If you're famous and we all know the most famous koreans are BTS, the respect for them is *HUGE* especially from other idols that are not as popular. Many of them wanted to become idols cause of BTS and their role models are the members. It's really great to see them praising bts, i get amazed everytime of how huge and famous they are now💜

Sunbaenim/s = Senior/s (either it's a girl or a boy) junior groups/individuals must call the groups/individuals that made a debut before them or someone that is higher than them or has been in the industry for a long time than them. It's a sign of respect.

I think for us ARMYs it's difficult to grasp BTS's popularity because we see them as these talented but goofy and hilarious guys. In Korea, they are the celebrities of celebrities. They are probably the most popular people in Korea right now.
Also, about the younger idols mentioning how nice BTS is to them is quite special and heartwarming. Unfortunately, it's a known fact that when BTS were rookies, they weren't treated well and were looked down upon by some senior (sunbae) idol groups. In one speech at a year end award show for 2018, Jhope mentioned how they want to be good sunbaes to their hoobaes (juniors). That's why the boys are always warm and sweet towards the younger groups. They don't want them to experience what they experienced before.

Sunbaenim is a honorific used for seniors in a field you are working in as a way to address them with respect..Doesn't matter if they are younger or older,if the person is working in that particular field before you, that's your senior aka Sunbaenim..FOR example BTS is TXT's subaenim..and TXT is BTS's hoobae(junior) (hoobae is the opposite of sunbae/sunbaenim)
Also If some rookie group doesn't address a senior group respectfully, they will be considered disrespectful

i want to say that k-industry isn't at all different from western in the sense that it is really competitive. this sort of open interaction between a senior and other groups regardless of label is not common. usually groups are only interacting/admiring/talking about each other if they are under the same label. it's very rare to receive this sort of thing in korean industry as well. the fact is that bts are so down to earth and friendly with literally every junior, senior that it creates this really genuine appreciation around them. it's not at all common, the k-industry is very competitive and even more labelmates-only than western industry, i'd say. that is ecaxtly why almost all of these people were so surprised with their bts interactions. bc it's not common to have genuinely friendly and nice seniors who interact with you, unless you are label mates or have huge popularity yourself. so bts status and relationship with ppl around them is rather precious in that sense.

BTS is really big BIG in Korea. They're like the celebrities of celebrities. These idol groups have BTS as their role models and that's sooo nice since it makes you see that BTS are touching people's lives, not just the fans' but also those in the same industry. It's soo cute how excited they are to meet BTS since BTS rarely comes on shows in korea, except award shows and music shows.

Everyone is so surprised by BTS being so nice, especially rookie groups, because usually the more popular idol groups are really stuck up and either don't greet them at all or are just kind of rude. But since BTS has been through that themselves for years and are just generally nice to everyone, they're always nice and give advice, no matter how tired or busy they are. People really admire that since it's not always a given in the idol industry

To be precise, "sunbae" is what ypu call your senior. It's for anyone in a similar situation to you who has more experience in that situation, like an upperclassman or a co-worker who's been in the same company longer.
The "-nim" at the end is more respectful/formal. It's like using "hyungnim," instead of "hyung" to make it more respectful/formal.
But unlike hyung/noona/unni/oppa, sunbae is used by everyone to address their seniors.
"Hoobae" is opposite of "sunbae." It's what seniors call their juniors.

  • @boramuffin12
    @boramuffin12 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The industry IS very competitive. There are many groups out there, and there are also a lot of new ones that coming out. But as far as I know, and as you watched too, there are a lot of rookies or hoobae (juniors) out there that really look up to our boys. And as you can see too, there are only good words coming out after people meet our boys. They ARE really nice kids, seriously.
And oh btw, there is also this tradition(?)/culture between these artists where the rookie or hoobae go to their senior's waiting room (if they are on the same promotion/comeback period) and greet them and give them their CD. I guess it's sort of like "please keep an eye on our groups" "please take care of us" kind of message.

the thing is... the idols is these videos are mostly rookies because trust me kpop industry is way more competitive than western industry cause its not just about them there is the company to think about too and as there usually are multiple group in one company and to talk about some group outside their company is something very uncommon... that being said bts are being appreciated so much now even by older groups comparing to the first time they started getting the fame worldwide because now their fame is is KABOOMMM like they are wayyyyyy up there tbh

and more information about this, why meeting BTS seems really like a precious moment for other artist, because BTS rarely shown in korean tv shows (variety shows) because they were treated poorly at the time and therefore their company decided not to present BTS on Korean TV shows unless their own variety show (run bts). So that’s why people really want to show bts in real life especially with their success nowadays.

Oh! Sunbaenim is Korean, polite way of calling seniors or elders. As you may already know, age is important in Korea and younger always show some respect to the olders/elders. So usually sunbaenim is how juniors in school call their seniors, but in the society (i.e. at company), people who started the career earlier are called sunbaenim. Since JK debuted when he was really young, he is still younger than some idol group members but he made his debut in 2013 so singer (not only singers but also others working in entertainment business) who debuted after BTS did should call should them sunbaenim regardless of their age. Hope it helps you understand💜💜💜

BTS, unfortunately, had to deal with a lot of peers and seniors in the industry looking down on them because of who they were and the agency they belonged to. Their poor origins was something that was really held up against them. There's a lot of classism in the kpop industry (and in Korean society in general). This is why lesser-known idols are so surprised when they see BTS (sunbaenims aka seniors) be so kind and encouraging with them. BTS know the struggle, know how much it sucks to have your peers and seniors look down on you or ignore you, and try to not let competitiveness in the industry take away from how they treat other people.
Everybody who has met BTS has said how surprised they were at BTS' kindness and good manners and how untypical that is in the industry generally speaking. This kindness of theirs isn't something that's been here only recently. A former trainee that trained with BTS pre-debut talked about RM and the boys who ended up being part of BTS encouraging supporting one another during that difficult time, no matter who was ultimately chosen for debut and who wasn't. He said that it wasn't something usual at all to find among trainees because of the high levels of competition being there and kids being desperate to succeed and debut.

Its always so nice to hear about how kind BTS are to their juniors (hoobaes, when you see that word it means junior group), because BTS were mistreated so often by their seniors when they were in their early years, all the way up until recently, and you can tell they were like "we ain't never gonna treat our junior groups the way we were treated." Its so sad to know that mistreatment still happens to small groups today, because way too many juniors are shocked to be treated kindly by BTS when there aren't any cameras around. I believe BTS are fostering a culture change within the idol community, and how these groups they've treated well will probably go on to treat their juniors well when it's their turn, instead of treating them harshly and thinking "We had to go through it, you can too" and continuing the toxic cycle like it's some right of passage.

Also, sunbaenim is a honorific word used in korean! It's like saying 'senior' at the end of someone's name to show respect.
This is part of the reason why I learned korean - because there are just so many nuances in the language and culture that help add more context and meaning to videos you watch of the boys! Same thing with all the 'oppa, noona, hyung, eonni' words that they always use!

  • @TheLitterboxx
    @TheLitterboxx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Sunbaenim means senior or someone more experienced in any given industry/field. These idols were either rookies or joined Kpop later than BTS, that’s why they referred to BTS as sunbaenims. It’s considered rude to not use honorifics to address someone older/more experienced than you in Korea.
It’s not necessary the case that kpop idols love each other. There are big time competitions among esp. the big 3 companies and bighit. Although the competitions are more on the company level and among fandoms, not usually among idols. Due to the nature of their work, idols usually have a tighter circle for socialization within the industry. Sometimes competition arise within a group or during pre-debut training period, resulting in disband or bad rumors. But BTS is a group that’s really close and love each other dearly, which is one of the reason they get to where they are today, because of their close bond, unlike some other kpop groups which members might fight or distance each other behind the scene. Hope this long explanation helps💜

Sunbaenim means someone who is older in the Music or Actor business. So someone who makes the Same job like you but longer. It's a sign of respect

you guys should definitely watch part 2 and 3 to this video, it really shows how much people look up to and respect BTS in the industry now. They’re also both pretty short videos. Ill send links below!

Yes! You guys most definitely picked the right one!! Thank you so much!! This was so enjoyable to see! Some other ones edit out some parts so you don't get to see the other idol groups reacting to all the BTS members but just certain ones! This one shows them excited about all the BTS members not just the select ones the creator wants to be acknowledged!! Actually Idol groups have always had the utmost respect and support for one another! It's just so sad that certain fandoms of certain groups are not so friendly & supportive of other groups to say the least! BTS are actually quite close friends with some other groups ironically even though those idol groups fans don't feel the same way!! Lol!!

It's very competitive in the Korean music industry as well, and BTS were looked down on by other idols in the past that's one of the reasons they go out of their way to be nice to others in the industry especially their juniors. With the hierarchy system in Korea, rookies especially ones from smaller companies alot times don't get treated well so it's means even more to those groups that BTS is so nice and actually take interest in them. They've even reached out to some of them, given advice and have become friends

The station that problematic men aired on has actually been posting all of RMs cuts recently so I think if you search for it on YT it’ll be easier to find RM centered parts of the episodes
