Can You UNSHRINK or UNFELT Alpaca Woolen Garments? | Experimenting with my Sweater

- Alpaca woolen products tend to felt and shrink when they are washed uncarerfully. For example, when I put my alpaca woolen sweater in the washing machine it had shrunk about two sizes and it had started felted a LOT.
I was heartbroken until I found out these instructions from Purely Alpaca, claiming that you can actually UNSHRINK and UNFELT an alpaca woolen garment.

BUT, unfortunately, after going through these steps, my garment is still felted, but it did unshrink a bit AND it feels a lot softer!

Hahah yeah unfortunately, there isn't much you can do once it starts felting. But the good news is that a felted hat is warmer and more wind- and water-resistant, hahah. Lesson learned the hard way right!?

Stuffing with lots of towels will help to stretch. I have an alpaca cardigan so it was really hard to stretch because it is open in front, but arms were relatively easy to stretch when I just put bunch of towels. My cardigan did shrunk back just a little bit when dried, but it was much better! Oh and I did not need to remove the conditioner. At first I washed the conditioner and the result wasn’t good at all. I just stretched(stuffed) my cardigan and air dried after soaking on the conditioner.
Ohh that's very interesting! So smart to stuff it with towels. Did the fiber felt at all? How did it feel wearing it with the conditioner in it? It didn't irritate your skin afterwards? Thanks for the suggestion
I have an alpaca sweater than went into a cold water delicate wash and yikes! It went from a women's large to a toddler's large. I stretched and stretched and stretch some more and got it to about a women's small cropped sweater. Sigh. It's badly felted - can't see the beautiful, knitted pattern. I'll try the conditioner method and report back.

Try a cashmere stone or brush for unfelting

@@yanantinalpaca376 I tried it on a badly felted sweater which seemed to get a lot of the damage fixed. I still sent it to a dry cleaner for blocking, but it cleaned it up considerably before I sent it off.
