- Here's one of the most popular songs ever from PBS's ten-time-Emmy-winning literacy education series, "Between the Lions." "When Two Vowels Go Walking" presents the well-known rule about long vowel sounds in peppy, pop fashion, with lyrics by Sarah Durkee, music by Christopher Cerf, and a nice vocal turn from Paul Jacobs (with Sarah Durkee helping out). Check it out!
Childhood memories right there!❤
I agree with you Darnee1458.
TBH, when I watched this when I watched an episode of _Between the Lions,_ I actually thought the music video was well animated and that the song was good. And of course, when I heard my teacher say "when two vowels, the first one does the talking," it sounded familiar, and I found out I heard it from _BTL._ So many memories.
i'm 15 and i still love this song! (believe me, there aren't many things i love), but this song and between the lions in general is probably the best thing humans ever came up with! Many grateful thanks from me for posting this video.
The second graders in my split class got to sing this for their program! I loved hearing it every day.
I used to watch between the lions when I was such a young kid!! with this show I learned the English I speak today!! Thank you Between the Lions! :)
I agree! It's the best show. It's very enjoyable for both children and adults. The writers have a great sense of humor. :)
Great song! Great lyrics! Very well done! Thanks for sharing!
I was a young immigrant when I first saw this. Two decades later it still rings in my head when I teach english.

I Love this song!
I'm surprised this kids video has their comments open.
Me too
I appreciate it😊!
This was my jam as a child
That's very simple and clear explaining! Thank you!
Wow, a catchy tune that really helps decode some of those tricky vowel digraphs! FANTASTIC! Thanks for sharing!
Best educational television program ever
In my opinion,
This song is better than those other Between The Lions songs!
I raised my kids on PBS and then when I started having grandchildren, they were raised on it, too. The best thing that ever happened to PBS Kids was the advent of Between The Lions. Great songs, great messages, great fun....
This song is so catchy omg!!!!!!
I love this song!
I remember this song from when I was in first grade! I watched Between the Lions all the time!
I love Paul Jacobs and Sarah Durkee.
The last time I heard this is when I was in 1st grade! Memories ^^

How's this for a verse?
When two vowels go walkin',
The first one does the talkin'.
In *rye*, you hear the Y, but not the E.
In *fruit*, you hear the U.
The I has zilch to do.
The second one, you don't hear, though you see.
Yes, the two of them together,
in *glue* and *true* and *blue*.
The U speaks up, the E does not (But...) Shh! I'm tellin' U! (Get it?)
Dude.... How long did u think of dis? 0_0
I wish I could remember.
Ricky M racing
Ricky M you’re so silly!
I Love It! I will include it in the song for my son

I remember this from when I was first trying to read.🙂😇

Great lion video, looking forward to enjoying more...
I used to always draw an "a" with a bow because of this!
Play it every day at school. kids love it. Daym I can never get any COOL ADULT songs stuck in my head....having said that now I shall always remember what a vowel is :P hheh
Love it
Don't mean to boast
But here's a toast
We're quite a team!
When two vowels go walking
The first one does the talking
I'm sorry, number two, it's such a shame
Although it gives you pain
The rule is very plain
When two vowels walk
The first one says its name!
But... Shh!
Yes, when two vowels walk
The first one says its name!
I used to be a volunteer reading helper in schools. I had just taught one of my students this rule and she was nailing it. Then she got out her book...about soup. Had to do some really quick explaining about exceptions after that!
Is there a rhyme about the exceptions?
Nifty! This will be great fo my English students! Thanks for posting it!
It would have been super, though, if they hadn't left out some interesting bits:
- diptongs which do not sound like either of the vowels that make them up, such as "OO", "OU/OW", "AU/AW".
- "y" is not a vowel.
love it
so much
when i was small, i watch this show every day
That is exactly correct! Although it gives him pains, the truth of this remains: When two vowels walk the first one says its name....
LOL!!!!
Perfect excellent very very very very very
very very very very very nice best thank
you for this video
I love this song
I love this song
I remember when I was a little kid watching this now I'm 14 still love it c:
For reasons that are unknown, the A always feels a certain type of way when a certain letter gets to speak and she doesn't.
by the looks of the animating it looks like this show has its 50th aniversarry
I looked for these lyrics for a while, so I thought someone else might appreciate them... ENJOY!
When two vowels go walking
The first one does the talking
In "boat" you hear the "o" and not the "a"
In "meat" you hear the "e"
The "a" sits quietly
The second vowel you see but you don't say
But... Shh!
Just the two of us together
In "train" and "pail" and "rain"
The "a" speaks up; the "i" does not
Then explain "field" and "yield". By the way, Y can sometimes be used as vowel, like in "fly" or in "myth".
lol i used to love this part,Cliff Hanger, and Vowel Boot Camp XD. I miss these shows. This was back then when I actually found learning fun!
i'm an elementary english teacher in mexico, and i'd really love to use this videos with my children!!! i think homework will be watch channel! haha!

I remember the math teacher used to play this song back in 3rd grade.
the math teacher? you mean language arts right?
Same thing.
dunkindonutmaster09 this video talks about vowels which is language arts not math
Mustaki Same teacher in 3rd Grade.

I sang this in English class. Now that's how everyone remembers.
I Love This Song Came out 2009
In response to Judy Thompson: All good teachers draw upon several resources to teach children complex English spelling and grammar rules. Used in conjunction with THRASS words that you list fall under other synthetic vowel sounds and graphemes. Children are taught to recognise that there are exceptions to the rules. We shouldn't disregard these opportunities for teaching children to become critical thinkers and we shouldn't rule out strategies that allow children with different learning styles to learn either. Let's keep some fun elements in young children's learning too.
I LOVE IT
@William Lu About "quota," when U follows Q, it acts as a consonant to give it a sound of its own, so absolutely, that doesn't count as breaking the 2-vowel rule.
So nostalgic. My second grade teacher once showed me this.
love this
sue!
I remember I watched this song in my kindergarten class
I love it
I love this song!!!!!!!

I love this
"When two vowels go walking
The first one does the talking
OA
AI
When two vowels go walking
The first one does the talking
OA
EA
If you walk to the lake
With a pail and some bait
And you sit and you wait
For a fish on the take
And with a swish of his tail
You fall on a pail
These are the times
When you say, oh well
If you go out and roam
Far from home
With a cloak and an oath
That you find the coast
Like a wizard with a goal
With a grunt and a groan
You walk that road
Until you reach your goal
If you walk to the beach
To swim in the sea
And harvest a feast
Of green seaweed
It's like a dream
When you feed your team
When they take a seat
And they eat, eat, eat
When you reach your goal
And create your scene
You will live a life
That's nice and neat, you'll see
Nice and neat, you'll see
Nice and neat, you'll see"
That kindly southern accent though
Nxu
This goes sooooo. hard !!!
Thank you for sharing!
I love this vevy much
I herd this song in class and the holl class sings it very loud
I think when 'Y' is used to sound like another vowel, then it's a vowel. Like in "Mary". The 'Y' sounds like 'ee'.
Used in a word like "Yogurt", then it's a consonant since it doesn't sound like a vowel.
Nowadays, no one gives a shit about 'Y'. as a vowel. Kinda like how no one gives a shit about the letter 'X'.
It's all fun & games until you try to reach the "ie" words like "niece" & "fries." Then it's a free-for-all between the two vowels.
He I like your music
wonderful
Holy shit the memories!!!
Those vowels look funny 😂😂😂
Ok, I know people are arguing about this rule, but is anyone else going on a nostalgia trip?
“But!”
“Shh! Let me explain.”
What a betrayal.
I wonder what this show refers to any two-vowel words or syllables that don't follow this rule as, considering _The Letter People_ calls them "Runaway words."
i love this
I mean, let's not forget the diphthongs:
*ai*sle
*ei*ght
*oi*l
s*au*rkr*au*t
s*ou*p
s*ui*te
f*eu*d
Also known as the sounds Latin inherits from Greek.
Additional diphthongs not inherited from Greek:
b*oo*t
f*ea*r (would better be represented by ie, but can't think of any examples)
h*ai*r (would better be represented by a letter combination which never occurs in English, or any Latin-based language)
@JewlTonz Good idea, Jewl!
Also occasionally featured in Between The Lions is "Vowel Boot Camp." The only problem I have with this song is that it just uses A, E, I, O, U, and Sometimes Y. I have always taught the vowel sounds as sometimes including W (as in know, show, blow, throw).
And, vorephilia is correct that English is a difficult language (mostly because it's a polyglut of words gathered from hundreds of different languages and dialects [
with their pronunciationa often intact].)
I love it
I haven't seen this in a long time
This was my jam
Catchy!
I remember seeing this when I was younger & feeling sorry for the second vowel
I heard a different version of this on Lioness' funniest media!
lovening it😁😁😁😁
English is filled with exceptions, this is one of them. This rule is the norm, but that doesn't make it false.
I wish you the best in your studies.
thnx i had 2 teach my sibling this
love this ;D
Wowee! So much better than the Starfall one!
The names of the parent lions (Cleo and Theo) don't follow the rule about long vowel sounds, because the o at the end is heard.
