What is atomic mass? It is a weighed average of the different isotopes of an element. It is sometimes referred to as atomic weight, relative atomic mass, or average atomic mass. We look at how to calculate and determine the weighed average of elements using atomic mass units.

Sir, I never knew that chemistry can actually make sense but this made me realize how interesting it can be and how wrong we receive an information. I somehow always manage to fail my chemistry, bio, and physics quizzes, and it's probably because I never thought my brain was smart enough to handle this so I never bothered with studying. I literally hated chemistry since day one, but the more I watch your videos the more I want to learn chemistry and explain it to people just the way you do. Thank you so much for this!

I am a student working toward a PhD in science education. This is a great video - you use several techniques that have been shown to help people learn difficult material
    1) define vocabulary in common language
    2) compare and contrast (weighted vs. non weighted average)
    3) build on/activate prior knowledge (beginning with average before moving on to weighted average and the use of the car analogy
    4) use of multiple representations (illustrations, science terms, number sentences)
    5) solved a simpler problem working toward the problem using isotopes
I am starting a playlist of exemplary chemistry videos and this will definitely be one of them.

There are not enough words to express my gratitude. I'm a straight A college student majoring in Biology. I LOVE Science, Yet my introductory chemistry class was about to undo all of that. I felt like there was no chance I would ever make it and almost dropped the class (greatly delaying graduation) because I knew that I could likely learn better from another professor. Your videos helped me bring my grade from a C to an A thus saving my 4.0 from certain destruction and allowing me to feel good about continuing with the course. Thanks for doing what you do.

Tyler, you could teach middle school Chemistry, your explanations are so clear and engaging. However, by publishing your videos, you can reach so many more students than just 25-50 in one semester/school year. I always struggled with the "weighted average" of the amu concept until now., thanks to the "Lemona" analogy. I will be recommending your videos to the science teachers I know. Keep up the good work!
