I was blown away the sweetness that came through. I also tasted how bitter it can be when the water is too warm.

It's 6:43am in Colorado, and I'm enjoying a cup right now.

    Hello sir,
Thx for a very interesting review. I am very curious about the taste, and also a bit nervous. I am not very fond of bitter tastes (I take my coffee with some sugar as I do not like the taste without). I wonder if I will be able to taste a yerba mate in a shop somewhere... I will look into that while continuing watching your videos.
Where I live, I found out that Amazon sell yerba mate (they have these blends: Taragui, Cruz De Malta, Canarias, Rosamonte, Playadito), and they also have the gourd and other things.
If I ever go in the direction of trying yerba mate, I would prefer to buy these from another shop than Amazon, but I will see what I can find.
    Take care my friend!
    Gilles

Hey Gilles, that's a good question. I'm currently uploading a new video where I mention you and your question, and having never tried sweet mate myself, it's maybe time I did, at least for the sake of science!
      Keep well

I tried this - and mate in general - for the first time yesterday (thanks for the Urushop tip). It tasted like what I imagine grass would taste like - very bitter and with no sweetness whatsoever. I was expecting something a bit more tea-like, but there's no similarity at all. I prepared another one today and it was a bit more enjoyable after yesterday's initial shock. In other words, for me at least, it seems to be one of those acquired tastes (hopefully, given I've got 2kgs of the stuff 😂).

Fantastic! Well done for giving it another chance. I liken it to olives; first time I tried them, I couldn't stand them. After a while they grew on me, now I absolutely love the things. Yerba mate has a huge number of health and other benefits that really make it worthwhile, and you'll find after a while that your palate develops to such an extent that, like me, you may find yourself on the harder stuff sooner than you think! This is a really good brand to start with, though. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to feed back!

@@TheAmbulatoryAnarchist I've really been enjoying this stuff! The caramelish note is definitely there (for me, I'd say it's more honey than caramel), especially at lower water temperatures. I've also been trying Pajarito from Paraguay (available on Urushop). Very nice; not too bitter, a bit smoky. Amanda also - quite similar to Playadito, I've found. The only one I've not really been getting on with has been Taragui - way too bitter and intense for me.

What temperature have you found the best to make it?

    • @TheAmbulatoryAnarchist

I've never measured the temperature. As a rule I fill my thermos 2/3 with boiled water and 1/3 with cold, and that seems to suit me fine. Playadito is definitely better with a slightly lower temp. Really brings out the biscuity sweetness

@@TheAmbulatoryAnarchist you're right. I had heard that from another person and it's perfect every time. I have adopted heating my water that way. It kills the germs in the water
