i was born in Sonoma, and my friends and i made Super 8 movies up there at the quarry back in the 70s....

also, one of my Great Uncles committed suicide up there by sitting on a case of dynamite and blowing himself up. TRUE STORY.

also, a lot of those "structures" were just bored workers fucking around on their breaks.

I grew up in Sonoma and hike that hill from the cemetery to the quarry a million times since the early seventies. Supposed to be a ghost called "the white lady" that comes out at night in the cemetery

The quarry was used to mine cobblestones that line the Streets of San Francisco.
Stone was also used for ballast in ships. They employed Chinese labor.
We used to hike all over there with our guns when we were kids-1966.

I grew up in Sonoma, as a teenager we threw parties up here every weekend. We called the area with stacked rocks "Rock City". Pretty sure it is all remnants of the Italian stoneworkers who immigrated in the late 1800's.

We used go up there every Christmas morning for the Christmas doob and eat fist fulls of psilocybin throughout the rest of the year, especially in the summers.

@12:17 Is that the hill behind the buildings?
Only 12:20 in and I am loving this video.
Bonus that it will be new to you as well, as we are watching!
Imagine that growing up out there...and exploring the surrounding hillsides already...and THEN getting shown this little hidden gem for the first time...I imagine that was pretty sweet!.

its the hill right next to this one, and the buildings are the Sonoma mission that the quarry owner bought and used .thank you for watching !

I was up there years ago, happened upon it by chance while on a hike with a friend. At that time it was obvious some people were camping out up there but no sign of them. Then as time went by I forgot how I had accessed it and I asked another Sonoma native and he mentioned a little opening in the fence way up in the graveyard. I knew exactly where he meant. Anyway, very neat to see you’ve somehow discovered it. Growing up ‘the quarry’ was a hangout but we never got deep enough up there to find the village.
You’re right it’s a gem in these parts but not entirely accurate about it being singular in that regard. There are some very mystifying spots up in the west Sonoma Mountain hills, hidden away. Your channel is cool!

Hey Nate I've been following your channel for a little while now but I'm a native snowmen and if you want to know about the mystery of what we call the Platte tell in Sonoma we can get together but all that was built by high school kids me being one of them to throw kader's at in the old cobblestone minds and before it was a cobblestone minds they were pulling cinnabar out of their those cobblestones when all the way to San Francisco and pave the roads back in the day

Yup. It was bored teenagers in a small town. It was built, and rebuilt multiple times, and we moved a lot of rocks up to that spot to build it the first time. It's pretty incredible what some kids will do to keep themselves busy.

Some of my far relatives were salesman among the gold diggers in California. Their name was Schocken. One of them had a large grocery store and the other had a large warehouse. This was around 1860s
