    Wow. That was fantastic. I’m proud of Blanche for being willing to do so much soul-searching and look critically at 60 years of her most emotional memories, and I’m proud of Roland for refusing to put up with racist nonsense.
    I’m just sorry that this is still so relevant 31 years later. We all need to do better, and making positive assumptions, as he said, is absolutely the right place to begin.

    At first, I felt like Roland was really just blowing things out of proportion, as Blanche stated, it's really just a bunch of little old ladies getting together to wear white gloves, drink tea, and reminisce in southern culture, excluding the racism, subjugation, and slavery. For Blanche, that flag represents the vibrant culture she was raised in with her family that she loves so much, and the fun she had growing up. But apart from that, the flag represents an oppression that has long lived on against the African Americans and people of color, forced into slavery and persecuted throughout the ages, and what still happens today. I sympathize with Blanche because she didn't live the life of a racist bigot, all she remembers is her family and the wonderful memories she had as a child in the South. But i also sympathize with Roland because of what his people have gone through because of that flag and it's nation.

    • @jonmunoz2772
      @jonmunoz2772 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I respectfully don't agree with your statement, blanche may not have any bigoted feelings but she was raised and lived in a racist society and benefited from it personally because as she stated, blanches husband made a big scene about having his wife next to a black woman and she later accepted that what roland accepts of her family being racist is the truth. If you don't like what I said, then it is on you but that is what minorities go through on a daily basis and no I will not go back to where I come from and no I will not leave if I do not like it here. What I want is an equal and equitable society that actually accepts rights for all and not privileges for whites only.

      @JazzduMétro Media offense cannot be given, it can only be felt. What's offensive to one is not offensive to all and people don't have to bow to whatever might offend someone, because literally everything is offensive to someone. Some people are offended by curse words, but you can't expect everyone to not use them. That said, it's your choice to react how you will, so when it comes to things like racism, those people are rightly shunned from society.

      Ok, but the flag? I'm from Europe and I admit, I don't have this immediate reaction to the Confederate flag that I have to the Nazi flag. If someone hung a Nazi flag in a hotel, not only it would be a criminal offense, it would just turn people off. It would be perceived as evil, disgusting, the reaction to it would be emotional, like a reflex. I (and I assume, most of people from outside the US) don't have this reaction to the Confederate flag. So I'm not a good judge of the situation. I just know, I couldn't work or stay at a hotel with the Nazi flag, so I understand, for people whose collective memory includes the atrocities of the American South, it's a similar thing.

Roland was not personally effected by any of the experiences of Black slavery, he is just quoting someone elses experience, History means past , No flag is worth fighting over not even the Swastika , It may reflect the people waving them , so judge them on how they behave. Blanche Devereaux : Let me see the certificate. I want to see with my own eyes that my great-grandmother was... that thing you said.
      Dorothy Zbornak : A Yankee.
      Blanche Devereaux : Right.
      Dorothy Zbornak : A Yankee Doodle.
      Blanche Devereaux : Oh, stop it.
      Blanche Devereaux : [she carefully inspects the document] Oh, my God!
      Dorothy Zbornak : Oh, did I mention, her name was Feldman?

    I’ll tell you why there was only 1 season. Dorothy is gone and bringing up progressive issues is a loser these days.

      @ I think they mistyped, but their point is well-founded and correct. Back in the 90s, we referred to it as “politically correct”. I personally don’t like the Dixie flag, but I sure as heck would never stop anyone’s right to fly it. That’s someone’s heritage and they have a right, just like you and I, to show it. They also, like ALL other cultures, have a horrible history. We should remember and learn from mistakes, not throw them away and pretend like they never happened.

      I would attribute the failure more to a network and time slot change than to “bringing up progressive issues” (which is something the original show did all the time). Of course I agree with you that the lack of Dorothy was the main cause.

    comparing Confederates flag to nazis it is not right. I am surprised that nobody protests. I am against slavery but it existed from thousand years. it is not about color, white people used to be slaves too. I am not racist eighter, but we need to keep our history, we learn from history. We cannot go against our history. black people in Africa did and do terrible things, should we say all black people are bad? the same with native to North and South America.
    Just common sense. we are not proud of slavery but it happened before, it still exists and for sure it will be in the future; GMO it is first step to slavery.

    • @cioccolateriaveneziana
      @cioccolateriaveneziana ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ok but you're speaking about people. People's history is a continuum. A flag represents a state, an entity that has a start and an end and a policy and we can do without. Yes, slavery is part of human history but human history isn't predominantly about slavery. Confederate flag IS.
