The best video in 2024 that I have found which explained the host layer, fabric layer and storage layer and how things work end to end high level… very information. Thanks for posting this.
I needed this explanation, and I thank you so much for sharing it. It's taken me several weeks to get my head wrapped around the subtleties of UCS/storage/MDS/zoning/wwpn/target/initiator/masking/device-alias configs and this put it in perspective for me. THANK YOU!
Thanks a lot for the explanation. Even a guy with no knowledge in storage can get easily understand the concept. Please keep posting these kind of videos. You are a good teacher
John, At the risk of being repetitive to other comments.... AWESOME job of explaining. I am old Windows and old R&S network guy but never ever understood storage and fiber channel so you have helped piece it all together. Nice relevant video. Thank you
Thanks so much John. I am Linux profession and one of my interviews I was ask about WWNs and I had know idea so am happy I have this video to talk about it and is well explained to people like me who don't have any experience in storage.thanks much John
Absolutely fantastic. I am a VMware/SAN admin but havent had to implement boot from SAN over FC yet. Perfect rundown of what needs to be done. Thank you.
@@threeforty7 yes, last admin made a mess as hes connecting to storage on three different storage solutions, I am trying to understand how to troubleshoot and identify from the server which volumes are connected and to what storage device. How to identify from iscsci initiator what storage device in use, as we have lost connectivity to i: and i need to see this back on in disk manager and file explorer. Thanks
Thanks for a great introductory video about SAN. I bought 2 fibre channel cards by mistake and now trying to find a use for them on my home network.......grin
I’m in GEEK HEAVEN. This is what they left out of the Comptia A+/N+/Sec+. Linux skip it and Server+ covers it vaguely. Thank you for explaining this the WAY you did...
Thanks you for the vidoe, this is really good for the begginers. Good luck and looking for more videos on FC architecture and type of zones and rest. THanks again. GRK.
John, thanks for the video. This was a great refresher for something I haven't worked with in ages. Great intro video. I appreciate the way the video was made. Can you share how you created the video? I'd like to know how you made it look like you were standing in front of a green scree and how you could see what it was that was "behind" you so that you could point to appropriate areas of the screen. Thanks!
Awesome video to watch after watching some theoretical details on FC. Just one thing I want to clarify for myself. We have HBA at the host end which contains WWPN but what exactly we call to which contains the storage WWPNS? Is it FC adapters or something like that?
So, essentially, you need manual static IP config for all devices and manually create your routing tables / firewall on the switches from scratch. Holy crap what a nightmare. I take it these switches are not auto-sensing, lol. Question - you didnt mention ipv4 or ipv6 networks. Do tcp/ip networks not apply in SANs? Is this outside the realm of the OSI model? What scenarios would make a coverged network adapter a better solution than a network adapter / hba pair? I’m subscribing. You have a new student :)
Its May 2022, this is the Best video so far to understand basics of SAN
The best video in 2024 that I have found which explained the host layer, fabric layer and storage layer and how things work end to end high level… very information. Thanks for posting this.
