      @@matthewg4956 A few (2-6) small fish won't really produce enough to waste to support more than a few green onions I think Matthew. At that scale I think folks are better off running a small counter top hydroponic unit. All the small bench top systems I've seen folks try to market have 1 or 2 fish in them yet are overgrown with greens. It's all a marketing ploy if they're not including instructions for adding additional nutrients.
      That's my 2cents on them.
      It's also one of the reasons I'm, adding the soil bed to the balcony system (that I should be working on) that will be powered by a dozen or so rainbow fish.
      I hope that helps some mate.

    I'm in America, and subscribed to your channel for many years, but I never, never get your regular videos in my stream or recommendation list? I have to seach out your videos to watch them. Thanks for all your hard work and all the information about aquaponics. Do you think there is any way to grow trees aquaponicly, or aeroponicly/hydroponicly? Or blueberries bushes?
    Most impressed with your ginger and turmeric plants!

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen some 2 story tall papaya trees in a local system growing out of a 1ft deem media bed filled with rock. Mind you, he did need guise straps to keep the trees anchored. 😉
      Others have grown citrus, cane berries & bananas in their systems. Blueberries might be a challenge due to them preferring a lower pH than most systems run at. I've seen a few plant them out but they just never look healthy. They might do better in a decoupled system where the pH can be let fall lower.

  • @jimgreenwood5360
    @jimgreenwood5360 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had IBC grow beds above IBC sumps for more than 10 years. Trout did very well for 8 of those years but not the last 2 years. Cleaned the gravel, tested the water, bought new food and still trout had poor growth and died. The metal cages had a lot of rust and rusted metal was falling into the sump. Dismantled the system and using a magnet collected 320 gm of rusted metal from the sump, it looked like the usual sediment on the floor of the sump. The IBC cages had complete loss of metal in some areas. This was discovered after dismantling. I have no doubt that the fish were suffering Iron Toxicity. I now know that IBCs grow beds must NEVER be placed above the sump as corrosion will always occur. Corrosion of the cage is INENEVITABLE and it will KILL your fish. May take several years but it will happen. As it rusts even the thin galvanising will release toxic Zinc into the water as well as the toxic levels of Iron. This will weaken the fish and slowly kill them. Metals like Zinc and Iron are called essential trace elements and are only safe at extremely low levels.

      Glad you eventually replied. It is very important to spread the word. IBCs above sumps will always eventually kill the fish. This information must be shared with the aquaponic community.@@RobsAquaponics

    Looking at your window parts, is there any experimental evidence that sunlight is good r even necessary for fish, like it is for humans and vitamin D production?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not necessary but some folks enjoy being able to see the fish. Most fish will be getting some amount of sunlight in the wild so I can't see how it would harm them.
      I've noticed that most of the fish I've seen in tanks with windows don't spook as easy as fish in tanks with none.

    Can aquaponics system be connected with aeroponic system instead of hydroponic system

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had folks tell me they're going to but I haven't seen any updates on their systems Mark. The big issue would be to filter all the solids out so as to not clog the emitters I think.

    hey rob what do you use for ph down? i use a strong acid (phosphoric acid) on my hydroponic grows and am wondering if it would transfer over well to an aquaponics system.

    • @Pankaj13Das
      @Pankaj13Das ปีที่แล้ว

      In aquaponics you need pH to be in range of 6.8 - 7.2 to keep the nitration cycle running. Rather pH neutral.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't be adding any pH down into a system with fish. I'd treat the top up water & add that in slowly to lower the overall system pH. The pH will naturally start falling as the amount of ammonia increases & is oxidised into nitrate as that process consumes alkalinity.
      How old is your system?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Pankaj13Das I prefer 6.5 - 7 👍

    Has anyone ever seen or heard of iron Fe toxicity in an IBC setup? I can't be the only victim. Caused by rusty cages above sumps.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're the first one I've heard of Jim. Could it be a sensitivity that the trout have?

    • @jimgreenwood5360
      @jimgreenwood5360 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobsAquaponics It is iron toxicity due to the large amount of rusted iron dissolving in a solvent ie water. Only safe and beneficial as a trace element which is at very low levels. It also takes several years to become a lethal problem. Very likely causes failure without being recognized as the cause.
