They don't appear to have been brought up together, the younger sister only met the older one when she already appeared to be an adult, so not sure why she said she hadn't ever fought with the older sister for anything, they'd barely been around one another.
As per my understanding of the culture at that period Aristrocratic families only considered children from main wife for marriage hence main lead belonging to Aristrocratic family can marry liu xue ji. Concubines children were looked down upon let alone a daughter brought up in broth*l from a geisha mother hence the reference to status... Which I think was very sad... People should be judged for their own ability n strength rather than their parentage
