Right? The idea is that the opponent's head is above the knees so the knees hit and the head doesn't, but I swear nearly everyone of them look like the head is crashing into the mat
The best part about it is Undertaker's knees slamming into the ring makes such a heavy slamming noise you can feel the fucking impact in your vertebrae.
Legendary as the tombstone is, it couldn't have been good on Taker's knees. Especially being how big of a guy he is, and doing it for practically over 30 years.
My personal favorite wrestler and finisher of all-time. Undertaker took a fairly common move and turned it into something that was uniquely his and became acknowledged as one of the most devastating moves in wrestling history. When it comes to form, the one on Bret Hart at 1:08 is just the definition of picture perfect.
The Tombstone is one of the most dangerous forms of the Piledriver ever seen. The Undertaker does it spades. And even though he retired, I am glad there are others that do the move, including Kazuchika Okada, among others.
I think the most tombstone'd guy in the classic era was Kane and in the modern era was Batista. 4:22 Orton selling the Tombstone Piledriver as true GOAT.
Hogan's claims of being injured by the tombstone would have been believable if they looked like some of the ones the Undertaker gave his earliest opponents.
Best finisher of all time. None even come close. Its perfect. Not everyone can do it. It requires strength and Taker was able to do it on almost anyone. It has a great name and the fact Taker can fold the opponents arms afterwards just makes it better because it fits the character perfectly. And of course, the shit actually looks like it hurts! But Taker was able to keep everyone safe during his 3 decade career. And the simple variation he sometimes did when he actually hopped a little and landed on his knees is always crazy to look at. I always cringe when i see the one he did to Shawn Michaels, it looks so dangerous
They would have learned what the exact reference height was for lining your head up against his knees, so I think it would be just as much the responsibility of the upside down guy to prevent his own injury... if you're too low, you got to pull yourself up a bit and bend your neck in as he's not pulling out of that move!
I think because the first person he tombstones at survivor series 1990 went to the back and reamed undertaker out for doing it wrong. He did a lot of them pretty dangerously and Hulk Hogan knew it and tried to make Taker look bad. That’s probably why he always checked on them.
Undertaker botched it on Goldberg in their disaster showdown in Saudi A, dropping him head-first. This was after he'd suffered a concussion before the match even started.
Tombstone back then was so risky and dangerous. One wrong move could be a neck injury for the wrestler. You can see how his tombstones are gradually getting safer by him absorbing the force by kneeling followed by the bodyslam, so the victim's head/neck doesn't even touch the ground. I can't really complain them changing it for safety measures, but Taker and Kane's older tombstones was unbeatable.
Best way to see the move in its entirety and it makes it seem more definite when you get so used to seeing it presented that way. You subconsciously know that camera angle means Tombstone which means it’s over. Later on it helps with building drama effortlessly. I’m sure they didn’t think that far into it though. Probably just the best way to see since when he’s standing up with his opponent they’re collectively over 7 feet tall.
@@mEmShannonDAB I agree to an extent, I also think later in his career they did it more to hide his opponents head better using Takers knees. Then they hurry & cut to the front angle after "impact." On a straight angle, you would see the head not touching. I think it's totally planned that way. Its all about creating an illusion. Movie magic 🎩
@Cevrcde even if he did break his neck, that would be 1 less confirmed injury than the mediocre Owen Hart did with his piledriver. I only know of Austin and Severn, there may be more.

This is why Taker is the most respected guy in the WWE. He could do moves like this for 30 years and never once break anyone's neck.
They didn’t have him change it you idiot. Mark had never done the move before. It took him a while to figure out how to perform it safely
@@markbarrow2082 no they definitely adjusted it. In the beginning he never used to tuck his head between the legs.
@Dakota Matos in his early days of wrestling the tombstone was lethal but he figured how to perform better in time so it didn't look so dangerous
Old tombstone dangerous
The very first one he did on Koko B. Ware he did actually drop him on his head and almost broke his neck
Quite, the most satisfying finisher ever.
Some of these look so perfect that you felt that it hurt

that tombstone is like what Damien priest did on Street profits member... tombstone slam
1:55 - _A Cold Day in Hell_ - May 97
One of the last piledrivers Austin ever took, as he embargoed that move after his injury.
He got injured by Owen hart's Reverse Piledriver
Damn I didn't realized that
Legendary as the tombstone is, it couldn't have been good on Taker's knees. Especially being how big of a guy he is, and doing it for practically over 30 years.
That’s exactly what I was thinking lol 😆
@RaytheGrayt: It pretty much destroyed his knees.

I just watched 7 minutes of half naked men getting their head smashed into the floor

Such a great video of one of my favorite moves but watching it made my knees hurt.
The undertaker should've gotten oscar for this
The greatest in all WWE history
He was so lucky in the early days that no one had their neck broken.

This is very comforting in some extremely weird way.
How so?
2:14, did Kane literally hit his head?
The way he dropped the 3rd guy hahaha.. living legend Thee Undertaker.
The tombstone to Mark Henry when Taker trying to scare Kurt Angle was probably was the most devestating one. Imagine carrying a 400 lbs man?
Crazy he could do that..in his 97 run he was doing that on a nightly bases with vader..not just on ppv... but house show loop
Hogan's claims of being injured by the tombstone would have been believable if they looked like some of the ones the Undertaker gave his earliest opponents.
I like the old tombstone piledriver he rarely uses the old one unless hes too exhausted to do the move I miss old tombstone
RIP Takers knees.
He's going to have knee replacement surgery on both knees in the future.
At some point he got asked to keep the Tombstone Piledriver for special occasions, because hits on the head became a concern.

still probably just as safe, just visuably more devastating.
The Tombstone he gave to Mark Henry That was Power
I just realized the wrestler would wrap his arms/legs around undertaker to alleviate some of the weight. Still an impressive finishing move!
