Props to all the 1500’s taking a GM to the endgame and making him think a bit. Always get wiped out at the end, but still makes me feel better about my rating!
I love that Aman "James" Hableton is doing this instructive chess content here on TH-cam, showcasing the English opening, which is indeed fun, nice and sweet, all at the same time
After Qa5 by black in the English, I love playing b4, followed by Qxb4, Rb1! Hikaru played it in a blitz tournament before, and I win many games this way. One of my favorite variations.
The Hippo is rare for a reason - it's very passive and defensive early on. It's hard for lower rated players to grasp when to deviate. It's possible you could get an advantage by forcing your opponent to contend with an off-beat opening they aren't familiar with. But objectively, the best openings are (unsurprisingly) the mainlines - the Italian, the Spanish, Queen's Gambit, etc. Those are the ones players who want to improve should focus on studying, because they're the ones all players face most. People do speed-runs of all sorts of openings, like Botez Gambit speedruns where players just give away their queens. GMs and computers can play any opening against weaker players and come out on top because their understanding and technique is such that they can overcome an early disadvantage.
@GM Beth Harmon yeah I get it, I was being cheeky. It was just funny to me that Aman encountered the Hippo and was saying easy peasy while Eric is saying lay back, keep things closed and wait for your opponent to overpress. From what I've seen with all the speedruns as long as you don't come out of the opening dead lost you have a fighting chance. The middlegame offers plenty of opportunities to win or lose the game so worrying about an opening isn't super important.
I have been playing English for years now, and 1..d5 is a very common response.. objectively 2.cxd5 must be best .. but i love transposing to the Reti Gambit with 2.Nf3... players looking to dissolve the center quickly have NO IDEA what to do here
So would you consider a bishop to be 3.5 points of material and a knight to be 3? Or is it like 3.25 -3. Like how close are they in value? Or does it depend on the board state? I Guess there are board states where a bishop can out value a rook.....
Unless you're a computer it really doesn't matter and mostly depends on the board state. GM's tend to prefer bishops in open positions and knights in closed positions.
I fell asleep watching these and had a nightmare that Aman was crushing me on a world-sized chessboard and there were open diagonals for all his queens. You're a bully, Aman.
One of the great things about Aman is how he explains the thought process behind his moves in plain English.
Plain english?
@@Aks.868 what's a matter pal? Don't you speak English?
English speedrun.
@@ris3326 betta watch your English bub, I won't be speedrunning from anybody!

Aman: "Qc3 loses alot of stuff"
Me: "He only loses a pawn"
Aman: *up +9 after the White Qc3 line*

That tactic at 7:10 was nuts.
what blew my mind is that he knew there were gonna be some tactics around d5 as early as move 4. I wish I could understand a position half that well
Can you add the now playing song or which playlist you're running on Spotify please? Great content, love watching you guys.
11:04 - Fighting the hippo! Now we get to see how it gets shredded!... Wait, actually they put up a really good fight! Dang!

Im so hyped for the higher elos of this speedrun. Im learning some even from these, so can't wait for 2k+
Im literally a low rated 800 blitz player and when I play c4 i never see d5 to follow....weird
I feel like the thumbnails should get more and more english the farther Aman gets into the speed run
Love this series Aman, so much insight into the mind of a GM. Also, being English, I love the choice of opening!
Playing English now as main opening now so keep these good videos up 🎉
BungalowBill had 2:30 when you had 20 seconds and you won on time... nuts...
Typical engine user
5:24 - yeah, I saw all that immediately too 😂
Chessbrah should have more followers guys
Good chess... The background music slaps as well!
12:00 I'm confused, Eric is doing a Hippo speedrun and showing what to do, is Aman saying Eric's hippo is trash?
Most people do consider the hippo trash. That doesn’t change just because Eric is playing a jokey speed run.

3.15
And knight 2.67 as I recall - from AlfaZeros perspective
According to alpha zero a knight is worth 3.05 and a bishop is worth 3.33

13:44 I don't think I've seen that move Ne1 Nd3 a single time in the KIA speedrun 🤔
It’s played by white often against the KID which offers very different positions than the KIA

Is that mall techno playing around the 11-12 minute mark?
