    I'm glad you appreciate the realistic psychology. It's one of my favorite things about this show. Powder has a panic attack when she's left behind because she has crippling self-image and abandonment issues, and doesn't think through the possible consequences of her actions because she's just a child desperate to prove her worth. She has an anxious attachment style. Vi is an emotionally reactive teenager, so she lashes out to punish Powder's disobedience and hurt her the way she's hurting, then recognizes that she's gone too far, and steps away to collect herself. She has an avoidant attachment style. Silco is introduced as cartoonishly evil, but in this episode you not only get a backstory that explains his ruthlessness, but you see he also has the capacity to empathize. If you watch closely, you can see him process his way through cognitive dissonance. Powder hugs him. He is undoubtedly flooded with oxytocin and feels a swell of pity, much to his bewilderment. He then seems to find clarity when he recognizes his own trauma in her. His goals are no longer in conflict with his feelings; taking in this kindred spirit will not only give him a way to further his goals, but fill a hole in his life.

    My favorite thing about the first part is that as things are building up you start getting your hopes up that certain things will happen, and when they do it's bad. The biggest example is after Powder's first bomb fails and she has that chat with Vi where she's told they will work. It's so uplifting and hopeful and you think "Yeah! They will work!"... and then the monkey bomb works.

    What i love about the set up is that we're pretty much trained to expect the " character who constantly fails saves the day in the end" trope with Powder and her explosives. However we're shown time and time again just how dangerous the blue orbs and how even trained professionals struggle with them so what chance does a twelve year old girl have. As a result we are expecting one ending yet what we get is what seems obvious in retrospect.

    This show is just a master stroke. From the visuals to the music and especially the writing. Sometimes throwing money at a project does work out and apparently Arcane didn't even cost as much as you'd expect.
    I thought the end scene with Silco and Power mirrored Vi and Powder looking over Piltover at the end of episode one, but what they say is actually quite different. "And one day this city's gonna respect us" to "We'll show them. We'll show them all."

    What people sometimes fail to realise is that Silco can't just give shimmer to just anyone. He needs consent because if he forcefully gives it to a person and they are not on his side, they could just attack him and kill him along with probably all his advancement. It would work against him so he couldn't really force someone to take it before knowing that they were on his side.

  • @charlestonjew7587

    The writing in 'Arcane' is magnificent. What I particularly love is that the characters are consistent and act only on the knowledge that they have in story. They don't know things that they shouldn't just to exposit information to the audience. Cause and effect is in full swing.
    That said, to recontextualize the scene where Vi is trapped under the door and sees Mylo, Claggor and the head of Powder's monkey bomb, I don't think Vi realizes that Powder caused the explosion. No. What Vi knows at this point is Silco was trying to get through the door to get to Vander and the kids. For all she knew, Silco caused the explosion in an attempt to blast their way through the door. She knows Powder always screws up. Her bombs never work, period, let alone be capable of this kind of mass destruction. She told Powder to stay behind because she would not be of any use and to keep her safe on a life and death mission. Vi also knows Powder is upset and wants to help, so when Vi sees the monkey bomb head, in her mind, Vi's worst fear has been realized. Powder disobeyed her and now Mylo, Claggor and Powder are dead. If things weren't bad enough, Vander's last words to Vi, "Take care of Powder."
    This is tragic and mindbendingly painful for anyone until the true horror unfolds. Powder is not only alive but is, in fact, the one directly responsible for Mylo and Claggor's death. Although it was Silco who killed Vander, Powder set the chain of events that got to this point. Also, in Powder's mind, when she discovers just what she'd done, she was under the impression that she had caused Vander's death.
    Beautiful and emotionally devastating.

  • @samiam5859
    @samiam5859 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Btw, Vander did not build the monkey thing, Powder did. IT was there to show that she does not just build useless bombs but can also build something useful like an alarm. You can see all of her doodles on it and the button Vander clicked.
    Also, when Vi sees the monkey toy head, she doesn't know Powder did it because she knows her bombs don't work like that. Vi thinks powder came there to help them but also got killed or hurt. That is why she is crying seeing all her friends/ family being killed.

    My favorite thing about this show is how it lures us into a false dichotomy that is going to really take off in Act 2. way to assess this show is in pairs. Every character, every principle, most every scene pairs with another... Piltover v Zaun, viktor & jayce's discovery scene at the academy with hextec versus Powder's in a hole in the wall in the lanes, vander v silco, heimerdinger v mel (and viktor, for different thematic reasons), right up until the falseness of the dichotomy is revealed. It baits so, so good. Can't wait for Act 2&3. Also you have correctly identified that Viktor is the best character.

    Now I can complete the arguments for my theory that there was no quality gunpowder that Powder could have acess to in the undercity:
    1 - now we can confirm that in all those episodes, not a single zaunite has used a firearm, not even Silco's goons, which would have made killing Vi in the bridge trivial btw, they didn't use it, cause they didn't have it, and if anyone would have acess to it, it would be the ones trying to form a crime syndicate and a rebellion. That's actually kind of the whole point of developing Shimmer too, to have a mesma to fight back against piltover's superior technology.
    2 - also, powders bomba never worked cause the blast force was never nearly what she needed it to be, and once she found a different fuel for that the blast completely worked. Also, I think they would have actually given her a gun If possible, knowing how good her aim was. One could argue It was something too dangerous to give child, but I argue if you're ok letting her tinkering with nail bombs, which are arguably even more volatile, well...

    • @storieswithstyle
      @storieswithstyle  วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yes, that is pretty reasonable and probably the "truth". I think writing that in is such a genius move, it would add even more layers to powder as it is not even on her, but the surroundings. I will make it my headcannon though =)

    the lore they establish for Viktor in this show also makes him one of my favorite characters!
    Him and Powder are my favorites from each side of the story, and that's not a disservice to the rest of the cast, I think they are all fantastic, it's just those 2 are either really deep layers to them or are surprising new additions
    ALSO the voice acting from Powder was phenomenal!!! Arcane got a bunch of awards from the annie's (like oscars but for animation) but I think she deserved a win for it. (I believe Ella Purnell got it for her performance in the later episodes)

    One thing this show does so well is show not just tell. Feels like so many shows these days, especially anime tells u every single detail of things u either already know or it’s obvious. It’s nice having a show trust that the viewer can understand what’s going on. And the final scene on this episode reminds me of Attack on Titan every single time I watch it, “The hate in your eyes was enough to burn the world to ashes.”
    Also, u want them to split apart and have a reunion down the line huh? 🤣 Well about that

    The whole show is a masterclass in storytelling and character writing.
    The use of silent storytelling, storytelling through colors, tropes done right and sometimes feinting tropes and going 180.
    Their portrail of mental illness, the father figure, children and teens, the fact that heimerdinger cant relate to the fact that humans have a short lifespan and wants to speed up progress because they dont have 200 years and silco is just the perfect "villain".

    What a great finish to the first arc. I think you have a misunderstanding about Vi's fighting ability. She wasn't trained by the machine. She used it to spar with. She was most likely trained by Vander and IMO, Sevika the woman who walked away from Vander and joined SIlco's crew and got her arm blown off by the explosion. It is a great master class in storytelling and character development. Powder wanting to help jinxes it up when they're about ready to make their own break out. Powder has an extreme emotional attachement to Vi. We kinda saw it in the beginning of the first episode. When they saw their parents dead, Vi broke down and Powder was just kinda blank and then hugged Vi to ease her pain. She was totally depressed when Vi went to turn herself in, she understood why she would be leaving, and when Vi told her she's not ready and left her behind, she totally lost it because now she feels abandoned.

    While you can't really call it an exact science, at least in so far as players know (in the show it's clearly somehow measurable), Hextech, as well as most magic on the world of Runeterra is based on runes. You'll notice in the science scene, the spinning orb constantly lights up and flips various rune engraved metal pieces. Jayce spinning the cog left-right in an almost instinctual way was him trying to imitate the sequence of runes he saw when the mage cast his teleportation spell, almost like a timing precise combination lock.
    The sequence was off somehow, so didn't get the full teleport effect, but it still resulted in some sort of effect.
    The gemstone science part probably has to do with finding the right frequency to channel magical energy. Having correct rune sequences is still what is needed to get desired magical effects.
    But yeah... Runes are very important. The world itself was created by 6 world runes... which then fell into mortal hands and almost destroyed the world x).

    You mentioned the subversion of the tropes and how that's not quite the right way to describe it. I believe the writers understood that many tropes are super unrealistic. Like the underdog kid coming in and saving the day to prove herself to the gang. Instead, the writers said, "No. Let's write this the way things would actually happen."
    It's dark, but it's realistic, and I think that's why it doesn't feel like subversion. It feels like cause and effect, and it makes you feel kind of foolish for expecting everything to work out well.

    Something to note about Marcus, he really has no understanding of the undercity. As far as he's concerned Vander and Silco are the same, undercity crime bosses or some such. So he doesn't really have a Judas moment because he isn't betraying anyone as far as he is aware, he made a deal with Silco to arrest Vander, not to kill Grayson (that was the deal changing) so he was making a deal against one 'enemy' of his city with another. He is never on Vander's side so he can't ever 'betray' him. We see him as a Villian because we like and understand that Vander is good, but from his point of view he's just a copy doing his job (albeit in the most impatient, stupid and slightly corrupt way imaginable). For that matter, to him Grayson would be corrupt because she had a deal with Vander all this time. I still don't like Marcus , especially for abducting Vi which was just pure cowardice , but it's important to see characters motivations before judging them.

      I would slightly disagree, but only because I read him a bit differently personally (so only my opinion and not the only vaild interpretation). Marcus in the end was in over his head. He saw his boss "negotiate" with Vander and saw it worked and was like "I can do that too, but get money". He then sees the person he worked with is using death and carnage and is like "what, no? I just wanted influence". But he becomes XXX through it and embraces it and it is only an afterthought. Also, he does it for his child, so also not that "bad" a motive. I still dislike him :D

      @@storieswithstyle i agree that is where Marcus ends up (i was trying to only use information up to this episode to avoid spoilers since i didn't know how far you had watched). By the end of ep. 3 we don't know about his kid (i think she isn't born yet?) but i agree that is how his motivations change especially the part where he thinks he's doing the 'same' as Grayson

    My interpretation is that Silco turned the labor-strike on the bridge into a riot, which is what got so many people killed.

      @TheMedievalman9 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It's a good theory, but there's one flaw with it. If you look at the flashbacks, Vander is clearly much younger than he is on the bridge, and he has no beard. Whatever made him snap and turn on Silco, it happened a long time before the bridge.

    I think it wasn't shown as horrible enough living environment for people who are used to watching like post apocalyptic or abusive trauma stuff, but bad air, toxic water, everything built by scraps with no rules on safety etc, no education or loving/motherly type people anywhere is pretty bad by most realistic accounts, especially when you're just a bridge over from basically aristocratic high society with people that all have more than they ever need.

    Those jump scares really got you! great reaction, and I agree, I like it when the villains are not just pure evil, that they have motivations that are understandable, where you could even see yourself almost agreeing with them. Like Silco's desire to free his people from the tyranny of Piltover. The desire for autonomy, and freedom is so strong amongst the oppressed. Something that often gets ignored is that every successful rebellion against tyranny had both a peaceful AND a violent component. MLK never criticized violent black liberation groups in America. The IRA was the violent wing of Sinn Fien. Nelson Mandela was the leader of the violent wing of the ANC. He was arrested for robbing a bank. Even Gandhi did not criticize groups that engaged in violent protest against the British occupation of India. The residents of the Under city need Silco to gain their freedom. But they also need Vander too. Vander's loss is a heavy one for them. If Silco had allowed Vander to be arrested, he could have used that to spark the rebellion he wanted. It certainly would have legitimized a sustained violent protest. The oppressor determines the nature of the protest. If the oppressor allows peaceful protest to exist, protest will be peaceful. Protest is *only* violent if the oppressor requires it to be so.

    While I'm sure Viktor's name is an allusion to Frankenstein, given the whole "weird science" connection, there's a different fictional character I believe he more strongly resembles. To say who would absolutely be a spoiler, though, so I'll wait until you have finished the series to explain.

      @@storieswithstyle oh, very good. I see a lot of Doctor Faustus in Viktor, especially the Goethe and Christopher Marlowe versions of the character. Low born. Sickly (coughs up blood). An ambitious seeker of knowledge who turns to magic because natural law is too limiting. Gives himself over to dark power using his own blood. His ambitions cost the life of an innocent woman (Gretchen in the play, Sky in Arcane), leaving him to grieve. I would be very surprised if Faust wasn't one of the inspirations for Viktor.

    honestly I'm so glad to see someone who actually doesn't sympathize so strongly with Powder in this situation. When you watch reactions, people are so split down the middle between who was in the right or wrong, but it's honestly crazy to me how many people say that Powder can't be blamed in this situation just because she is a child/struggling with mental illness. As if the entire lead-up to this showing the children engaging in criminal activity wasn't building towards that moment.

    • @storieswithstyle
      @storieswithstyle  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Blame is a finickiy word here, but I think Powder is way too naive and fairytale-like in her thinking, though it is understandable where she comes from. she still royall fd up :( Love that. she is sympathetic but really did terrible horrid stuff that realistically woul exactly result in a character like Jinx =) God tier writing. I always adhere to (because I agree) the philosophy of Kyoraku Shunsui, one of my favourite charaters in all of fiction, who said "it does not matter who owes who or who did what, in a conflict, both sides are evil". Again, you could subvert that and the latter part could as well be "both sides are right", but I think that in conflicts there are always 2 parties involved with faults and understandable intentiosn (hope that made sense, it is a conplex topic and I am better in vonveying these things when speaking, I think) =)
