Great review, funnily enough I had an Aldi London Porter today but not alongside Fuller's. Great reviews on all sorts of beers. I love the way you proudly remove the bottle tops and cans! A great channel for beer lovers. Keep it up Simon.
Good comparison there, I always wait for your rating at the end and I think it's fair and honest. I was really impressed with the head of the Fullers, a sign of a good beer. As a homebrewer, if I buy spray dried malt in bulk (like a 20kg bag), it costs me for a pound of that stuff about A$3.75 to push the beer up close to 1% ABV in a 23l brew. If I allow for the higher cost of a specialty malt, let's make it A$5. Now if I divide this by the amount of .5l bottles it's A5$/46 = A11c. Converted to UK money that's a 6 pence difference for each bottle. Surely big breweries buy their malt at cheaper prices going by the amount they buy. The ingredients don't really make that much of a difference I think, it's more about the size of the fermenters, how efficient their brewery is (like amount of staff / amount brewed) and being able to know that you'll be able to sell all your beer (like in Aldi) compared to a Waitrose. Waitrose would take a much larger cut to put the bottle in their shelves.
I totally agree with your rating. The comparison should include prices, so the viewer would know is it worth to "downgrade" to a budget version of the beer or not. Aldi's london porter is quite satisfying, and has that pleasure roughness, if you know what I mean. You can feel it's not perfect, but still it is a decent porter. Of course it's not Titanic plum porter or Guinness West Indies porter, but it gives you enough to buy it when you just can't afford something better or want to save some extra pennies.
Im guessing that using a nucleated glass would help the head retention on the Fullers? I haven’t seen the Aldi porter in my local store yet (Wickford) Will pick a couple up if they make an appearance Thank you for sharing and good luck with the council case!
Aldi do a fair number of Rip Offs, but this probably isn't one. Shepherd Neame have been doing a London Porter for Sainsburys for many years, probably Aldi asked them - could you do one for us too? and Shepherd Neame said yes. The version in Sainsburys is better. Can't help feeling this video would be better as a three beer revue including that one.
You've missed a trick here. A better comparison would the aldi beer and the London porter in sainsbury's made by Shepherd Neame. Its in a "selected" range and clearly a better comparison and probably what aldi are looking at rather than the fullers. Would have been interesting a comparison on beers by the same brewery brewed at a slight difference in abv and price
Good review Simon I'll give Fuller's porter try if I can find it?, shepherd neame usually nice beer like the 1698 but even that is bit thin for 6.5% abv?..btw Aldi coffee stout 5.2% is a nice 🍺👍
If it's brewed by Shepherd Neame it will be a decent beer and I am partall to many of their beers especially the 1698 and the IPA. I expect the Fuller's brew to be that bit extra! So not surprised by your outcome. Both very acceptable beers.
I enjoy a glass of Fuller's Porter, but did not enjoy Aldi's London Porter at all when I tried it a few months ago. My favourite, however, is Titanic Plum Porter.
You could find pubs open any time of night and day around the London markets so that porters could get refreshment once upon a time ..... normal pub times were quite restrictive then everywhere else . I agree with your rating . Shepherd Neame makes nice beer.... Aldis obviously fix the costs in this case ....
Fullers London Porter is one of my favourite beers, a beer that I rate along with FLP is Legend Stout from Nigeria, if you like FLP then if you ever get the chance give Legend Stout a taste. There again I much prefer the taste of Nigerian Guinness to any that I have tried in UK pubs.
My local two Aldi (south east England) have never stocked the dark stuff, including this London Porter, poxy situation. They only stock the rancid Aldi Harper plum porter, not buying that garbage. Shepperd Neame is just down the road btw, what a farce.
Sadly the Aldi London Porter doesn't make it up to the N.East of England either! As a porter/stout fan I have to confess to being very partial to the Fuller's brew, agree with your rating. Normally buy it directly from Fuller's online (my DHL man is very careful!) I think he knows if he has a delivery for me it's a beer delivery!
Haven't seen them recently but I have seen the Fullers London Porter, ESB etc, in my local Morrisons at £2.25 each but 4 for the price of 3. Still prefer it on draught when I see it though.
I see it regularly in my local Aldi's near Cambridge. It's OK but nothing on the Fullers Porter. The Aldi version is probably closer to Fullers Black Cab, even though Black Cab technically isn't a Porter, more a strong mild and I can no longer find it on their website? Maybe now Asahi own Fullers Brewery, they no longer brew it?
The most boring of all the beer styles?!?! Waitrose in Barry - there's a blast from the past. Probably put them out of business myself because I'd be there every other day hitting their _free coffee_ offer when I used to driving instruct. Cheers Si!
They've put card readers on the coffee machines now, so you need to scan your w8rose card 1st else the machine won't work. I guess they had too many freeloaders coming in and filling their cups b4 walking off.🤣🤣
You really should stop with giving personal info out for you and your family's safety. There are a lot of nutters out there You gave enough info out to find your house in the fine or prison video and now you're telling everyone where your brother in law lives again like you did in a previous Salisbury video.
How can this be a fair comparison on appearance, texture and body when one has been poured into a nucleated glass? I cry bollocks, you're better than this.
Love your glasses! Body comes from the mash temperature as well as the grain build up. You did go to the UK's most expensive supermarket for your 71p difference. Cheers!
Would definitely pay the extra for a better beer just looks better but at the end of the day it’s what you can afford and at the if it is drinkable why not buy it you could just by the expensive one has a treat.
Would've been better to see them brew something nearer to price and then get a truer comparison. Don't blame aldi wanting to get cheaper but we all know quality is key. Plus not like fullers breaks the bank.
Something changed with Fullers London pride it's not the same beer anymore. I know fullers was taken over some years back so may explain this. Their other beers for some reason still taste the same and the usual fullers quality. Almost like London pride is from another brewery. I don't know why though.

Great comparison and I completely agree. Fullers is my absolute favorite. 20 minutes isn’t too long at all.
That's the kind of entertainment I enjoy on a friday evening, keep up the good work!

The hair looks ready for a samurai-style back of the top of the head man-bun. You're ready for this, Simon.

Can confirm that Wickford Aldi have had them in stock before. Il be disappointed if they have discontinued them already
Nice one Jason, thanks for the heads up!
I might just drop in later 👌🏻

I may skimp on food but never on beer - one has to get ones priorities right.

What if you mixed them together?

I really like shepherd neame double stout!

Hi mate please review Salt Glide NEIPA, cheers👍🏼👍🏼

Fullers Porter is often on sale for £1.50
Do you ever buy like 24 bottles pack or 12?
Good pronunciation of "Asahi" by the way

I'm a true northerner and hate that London but. BIG but the only thing I like about London the one thing is Fuller's brewery 👍
Try Fuller's ESB ! Two pints and you will not be playing darts too well !
How can this be a fair comparison on appearance, texture and body when one has been poured into a nucleated glass? I cry bollocks, you're better than this.
Shepherd Neame produce superb porters forLidl, Aldi and Sainsbury but unfortunately don't do one for themselves. It seems such a shame.
Fullers London Porter is fantastic
Love your glasses!
Body comes from the mash temperature as well as the grain build up. You did go to the UK's most expensive supermarket for your 71p difference.
Cheers!
Fuller's was always a great beer, the abv is right for the style
Would definitely pay the extra for a better beer just looks better but at the end of the day it’s what you can afford and at the if it is drinkable why not buy it you could just by the expensive one has a treat.
Going to Aldi today,so looks like a punt on the London porter at that price!!!
Fullers Porter is regularly £1.60 at Waitrose.
A no-brainer!!
Would've been better to see them brew something nearer to price and then get a truer comparison. Don't blame aldi wanting to get cheaper but we all know quality is key. Plus not like fullers breaks the bank.
For me I don't care about the price of beer. I think if price was most important for me, it would mean I'm drinking too much.
Something changed with Fullers London pride it's not the same beer anymore. I know fullers was taken over some years back so may explain this. No
Samuel Smith do a fantastic porter
Fuller's one for me. Just that bit better
like a porter will look out for a London Porter thanks
Are you feeling better?

Eels jellied eels
Funnily enough I had this in my Aldi the other day was okay but yeah just a English thing
