  • This video focuses on how to do a neurological examination to localise a neurological problem accurately allowing a more precise differential diagnosis and better-informed prognosis. This #cavalier King Charles spaniel was presented with acute onset #drooling, #head_tilt, #balance problems and abnormal eye movements. She had a facial nerve paralysis and vestibular disease but is a problem with the brain or the nerve? When a dog presents with clinical signs such as facial asymmetry, drooping of the lips or eyelids, head tilt, loss of balance, or an abnormal gait, it’s essential to determine whether these issues stem from the peripheral or central nervous system. Through a detailed neurological examination, I'll guide you on assessing reflexes, eye movement, head position, and more, to pinpoint the affected areas within the nervous system. Understanding the origin of these clinical signs allows for a more accurate differential diagnosis and more informed prognosis. By recognizing these subtle yet crucial differences, veterinarians and pet owners alike can make more informed decisions for the dog’s care and recovery.

Great, thanks! I'd be most grateful for a neuro exam check sheet if you wouldn't mind sharing it please? (Cavalier mad Ophtho here).

My dog was diagnosed with autoimmune brain inflammation six months ago. In addition, she had minimal brain herniation. In November, one night she was pacing and restless. I took her to the vet thinking she had a relapse. They gave her serums. My maltese developed very severe head tilt and excessive drooling after taking Mannitol and corticosteroids serum. When I take her to the vet she was able to walk and conscious. Within a few hours after taking those serums she had severe neurological symptoms and not able to walk either. We called the vet and she gave her Mannitol serum again. She died in 3 days in pain. She was only 3.5 years old. Did those serums kill my pup?

Sorry for your loss - must have been extremely distressing. Sounds like meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown origin (MUO) which is a very serious often fatal disease that is treated with aggressive immunosuppression. (see here from a colleague's website vetoracle.com/resources/client-factsheets/meningoencephaltis-of-unknown-origin-factsheet/#:~:text=Meningoencephaltis%20of%20unknown%20origin%20(MUO,certain%20parts%20of%20your%20body.) I am sorry that I don't know what serums is (unless you mean straightforward mannitol which is used in an emergency setting to reduce brain swelling). Sadly I think it more likely that your poor dog died from the disease.
