@@libraryofaviking My one concern with these books is they are tagged as LGBT on Goodreads. Given how hard that stuff is pushed in modern media, I prefer to steer clear of it when I am reading for pleasure. How prevalent would you say it is in these books?

I haven’t read much by Brandon Sanderson, but, I loved Elantris. If that is not one of his best books then I definitely want/need to read more by him. Which I do intend to do with the Mistborn I trilogy about at the top of my TBR.

I hope you enjoy it. Elantris was his first book (I think) and he only gets better!

Recommendation - “The Name of the Wind”.
I know sometimes when a book or film is already “known” and so popular that it can make me shy away from it but if you’re going to spend as much time reading and listening as you do, you’re doing yourself and your audience a disservice by not reading it. It’s not perfect, but it’s a worthy read and I personally love it.

Just finished The Ninth Rain. Was gonna check out another series before coming back to it but I'm already itching to read The Bitter Twins.
Reminds me a bit of the Witcher in a very vague sense but like you said it's definitely unique. Really love the characters and their relationships.

I totally agree with you about The Heroes: it centers on one battle, but it's not *about* that battle. As with all things Abercrombie, it's about the characters; and thereby, about human nature. I read Elantris quite a while back, but haven't gotten to the other three. So thanks for adding to the ever-expanding TBR. :)

I am reading embers ad infinitum right now. Its a Web novel but its fantastic and detailed. Its setting is like fallout but it got special powers. All powers need prices to pay and everyone with special abilities has big flaws due to that. Not all powers are usefull in combat but all powers have their uses.
Its basicaly an Adventure series where mc and his main Team explore the world and search for a reason why the old World ended.
Author wrote it without monolouges and it works realy well.
This author wrote another masterpiece called lord of Mysteries. Fantastic victorian london inspired urban/high Fantasy series

I just must recommend The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern if you haven't read it already. My favourite book of the 58 books I've read so far this year. Reminds me of Neil Gaimans Neverwhere and Patrick Rothfuss The Slow Regard of Silent Things. I really like Elantris as well and The Heroes, completely agree with you about Abercrombies ability to make you care for his characters in just a few short pages. Their failings make them feel real I think.

Starting The First Binding now.. and it is uncomfortably similar to Name of the Wind. Down to even the specific prose of the first paragraph. I don't mind some inspiration but in this case I might have to DNF out of principle

After reading the Poppy War Trilogy last year, I was very excited to read Babel this year when it was released. While the book was amazing and had me hooked from the beginning I was a little let down at the end of the book. Trying to remain vague so I don't give spoilers away, but I just felt that the ending of Babel had similar themes to Burning God and I thought it would have been better if it had a slightly different ending but the same outcome if that makes sense. If she comes out with another book and ends it in a similar fashion I might just pass on the next R. F. Kuang book since you probably would be able to guess the outcome. Still, a fantastic read though!

@@FAL780 WHAAAATTTT??? I'm so glad to hear you say that! I'd been a bit nervous since a lot on booktube said that WMF was pretty meh compared to NOTW, which had me in a bit of a slump. His style is excellent and I also am really looking forward to book 3. Pluss, he'll release book three looooong before George RR Martin releases Winds of Winter. lol

    • @FAL780
      @FAL780 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@samm8190 WMF is much better for me. NOTW is a great and the perfect introduction to an amazing world with intriguing mysteries. I finished WMF in like a week and a half, just couldn't stop writing.
The best part of WMF is that Kvothe actually starts to set of and do some of the legendary things he said in the intro and many mysteries are partially explained and new mysteries arise.
Maybe the prose (or something) of NOTW is better, but for me the best part of a good fantasy world with a fascinating magic system with great mysteries is when that part of the story develops.

The First Binding is one of the only books I downright DNF’d in a long time. That book is not “inspired” by the name of the wind. It is a cheap knockoff of The Name of the Wind, just with different names. The prose are the same, the characters are the same, the storyline is the same, the magic system is very similar, and he even takes direct phrases from the Name of the Wind and puts it in his book🤦🏻‍♂️ It is borderline copyright infringement 😂Anyone who hasn’t read The Name of the Wind would probably enjoy depending on if they like that writing style.
